DH and I need to purchase a new tv and neither of us are very tech savvy. Our tv is still one of the big box type models that is probably 13 years old! It's hooked up to our stereo that is 20 years old. We keep waiting for the tv to die so we can get a new one and it seems that the stereo is going out but the tv is going strong. Anyway, we have no idea where to start but I wanted to try and get something on Black Friday or Cyber Monday so we can get a good deal. We stream all of our tv shows through our Wii (that is old as well) using Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. We don't have cable or satellite. From looking at tv's online, it looks like we need a smart tv. I saw some that were Roku tv's but I'm not sure exactly what that is . Anyone willing to educate me a little bit? We talked about going into a store and seeing what they recommend but since we don't know anything I don't want to get roped into something we don't need by an eager salesman and would like to have some idea before we go into the store. Thanks!

We have a couple Roku Smart TV, which work pretty well. It has the "apps" for Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc. installed so that you only have to push a button on the remote to start that particular service. One thing I notice is that the Smart TVs seem to get a little flakey (stop playing a show in the middle for no reason) after they get to be a couple of years old. I would think there should be software updates but I can't find information on any of that.
We also have a couple of the Amazon Fire Sticks, which plug into the USB ports in the backs of the newer TVs. This stick does the same function as the smart TV functions and seem to be a little more reliable. Plus they are pretty inexpensive. We chose this route when DS needed a new TV. We were able to purchase a larger TV and a Fire Stick for the same price as a smaller Smart TV.

I have two Sharp Aquos Smart LED TVs and I love them. The living room has a 80 inch and my bedroom is a 55 inch. Great pic, easy to set up with the WiFi. Has the apps for Netflix, Hulu, etc and a few other streaming services. Plenty of hdmi ports for blue ray player, Amazon fire stick, cable box, etc. The TV in the den is getting wonky and when it needs to be replaced it will be with another Aquos. Should be some pretty good sales coming up with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, good time buy.

Imo pick your size and price and find what you can get. We have a 57 inch 4k smart tv upstairs that was got at black Friday target and a 45 in hd not smart downstairs that we ordered from best buy during their black Friday years ago.
The 4k is better quality, but they are both good.
4k has apps to do Hulu, YouTube, netflix...no need for the wii

We only by Samsung TVs. We think they have the best picture. I recommend going around and comparing what's available. You will definitely see a difference.

We have a Vizio 4K LED. Get the biggest you can afford or will fit your space. If you purchase it at Costco you have 90 days to return for any reason.

Costco will probably have some great deals the week BEFORE Thanksgiving, so be on the lookout then. I would look for a 4K smart tv these days. I bought a Vizio a few years ago the week before Thanksgiving and it’s been great. If you can find an open box that they’re trying to move, you can get a really, really great deal plus they extend the warranty even more. We got one of our big Costco rebates a few weeks earlier that I used on the tv so I ended up paying only about $500 out of pocket for a really sweet 55” for my studio.

I wish we had a Costco around here but the closest one is over 2 hours away.
