I really want to get the Ancestry DNA kit but wondering if they’ve put it on sale in the past?? It’s $79 right now but hope it might go cheaper. Fingers crossed lol

I think $69 is the cheapest I have ever seen them. That was sometime during the holidays last year.

I am looking to get one of these test for someone also. I am wondering if anyone knows if there is a difference between the Ancestry one or the 23andme? Is one more reputable than the other? Thanks.

If you have ebates you get 15percent back. Not sure if that applies to the DNA kit though or only the membership.

I'm wondering the same thing. I wanted my whole family to do this, but I have a relative who expressed concern about the IBM/23andme connection.

My mother did the 23and me kit -- and the results are pretty ... generic. WE might be pretty generic, so the issue might not be the report ... but it was still disappointing. My sister, a PhD physical anthropologist, suggest the National Geographic kit tying the results to a larger background and framework would be of more interest.

23 and me has a buy one get one offer right now so it’s only $49 each. I used Ancestry a couple of months ago and learned two things...my ancestry is pretty boring and my maternal grandfather lied!!

My Mother's 23andme report is that she is "white from where white people come from" -- a 0.08 % Jewish .. but I think that is just their hedge since some of the northeastern European countries roll into the Northern European areas ... ( ...what is that called .. Kine circle ? -- the overlap area where circles encompass each other?) ETA: VENN diagram .... google again! Save

If you are interested in comparing your DNA results to a family tree then Ancestry is the way to go. The reason I chose Ancestry over 23andme is because you can actually upload your Ancestry results to 23andme (I think at a minimal added cost) and therefore benefit from information from both site. Last I checked, you cannot upload 23andme to Ancestry. Gedmatch is also a great place to upload your DNA info, it's free and provides more information.

I'm a DNA dummy I did get mine done through Ancestry and it's uploaded there, but I don't have many matches with trees and it's all pretty boring. Why should I upload to 23andme and what is Gedmatch and what will it tell me if I upload there? I guess I need a bit of a lesson on this stuff and what I can do with my Ancestry results.

It's been a few years since I've tested and it was at the tail end of my Ancestry research phase. I have not delved too heavily in the DNA information. I did a little poking around and was actually wrong. Family Tree DNA is the website I was thinking of that accepts DNA uploads from other sites. 23andme does not. I apologize for the misinformation. Gedmatch is a great place to upload your DNA results although there is a learning curve. The purpose of putting your info on multiple sites is to reach more potential matches. I suppose the question you need to ask yourself is, why you want to have your DNA tested. For me, I was able to find living distant relatives that I was able to connect with and further my genealogical research. If you want to make the most out of Ancestry DNA, your best bet is to build your tree which is clarify where your matches lie in your lineage.
