yep, I remember calling for the time. I also remember having a long cord on the phone so we could step around the corner for a little privacy. My mother in law had a party line up to the early 80's. I also remember waiting until after nine pm to call long distance which was only one town away. There was one time when we needed to call mother who lived on Guam and had to go to my sister's in law's to use their phone as it was so expensive our accounts would not handle it.

Remember 411 operators to get a phone number or address? I worked as a 411 operator for the Chicagoland area for 5 years in the 90’s. I remember it was crazy expensive and we would get in trouble when the charges showed up on the bill...

I remember the yellow and white pages. Haven't seen them in a few years, Even about 10 years ago, I would get them on my porch and get so frustrated… Because I never used them and thought they were a big waste!

Time and temperature...check.
Calling for the movies and times? and then having to listen to the loop a couple of times to get all the info...check.
Using the realllllllllllly long twisty cord to hide around corners or under the dining room table for privacy from your younger brother...check.
Calling the operator to get information....check.
Things have certainly changed, haven't they?

My oldest son loved his time on Guam when he was in the Navy a couple of years ago. He said they were the friendliest people he ever met. I still appreciate the bus driver that took Alex to get food while he was on duty for shore patrol so my boy wouldn't go all day without a meal.

That phone number is burned in my mind, even though I've forgotten 90% of the important things I should remember. Just for kicks I just dialed the number and IT STILL WORKS! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) It's changed a lot though - it used to be a simple "General Telephone time 6:58. Temperature 42." Now it's a 15 second sponsored ad followed by time & temp and then a detailed weather forecast followed by another ad.

And waiting til later in the evening for cheaper long distance rates.

I remember that! And this will totally show my age (like I've tried to hide it?) - does anyone remember that phone numbers were stated in words for the first three numbers? I can recall Whitney-2798 as a phone number from my childhood. There was also 'Oxbow' as a prefix from my area. It was dialed in as WHI or OXB on the rotary dial. It made it much easier to remember phone numbers when I was a kid Now I just ask Alexa for the time and weather since I don't wear a watch anymore. I do remember that! My grandma as Sunset8 (SU8). In DH's small town, you only had to dial the last 4 digits, if you were calling in the same prefix. I thought that was so cool. I also remember calling the time and temp number all the time. Fun memories!

Yes it was The Time and Temperature line here; I think one of the banks sponsored it. I think I even still remember the phone number! I'd call it and see if it weren't early on a Sunday morning and the number probably belongs to a real person now.

we didn't have a phone until we moved to the States. Granny (who we lived with when we came here) had a black rotary phone in her kitchen with an egg timer next to it. When I made a phone call, I was supposed to flip it over and be off the phone before the sand ran through.
I remember Granny calling for the time/weather. And looking up numbers in the phone book and only calling 4-1-1 if we couldn't find them or if it was out of area.

I so remember calling for time and temperature almost every morning in college (number was 788-0811) and it was a rotary phone that was so loud during dialing - and with all the 7 and 8 numbers it seemed to be horribly long and loud when my roommate was still asleep!
We had a party line when I was a kid, and Stella was the operator. I also remember when my dad was buying some additional acres of farmland we all got in the car to drive to a nearby town where he could use a pay phone to talk about it with the seller. He didn't want anyone to be able to listen in on the conversation, as they could have if he had called from home.

I remover calling the time. I used to re-set my clocks the night before the seasonal time changes. The next morning I’d call the time because a huge number of people were calling (this was in a large metro area). The lines would glitch somehow and it was like a conference call I could listen in on: “Who is this?” “I was calling the time.” “So was I. Who are you?” pretty entertaining when you’re a kid.

I do remember that! Did anyone else here ever have a party line when growing up? We had one until I was in the 5th grade. Yes! We shared one with a family who had three teenage daughters!

Oh, here's another one. We used to be able to break into a call by calling the operator and telling her we had an emergency call. Is that still possible to do? I forgot all about that, but yes! we did it too! A few years ago I mentioned something to my daughter about a busy signal and she said "What's that?" LOL!

My grandparents used to have a party line and their prefix was Victor, I forget the rest. I had forgotten about calling for the time. Rotary dial phones. Phone operators. Calling to get addresses and phone numbers. Seems like that was so long ago. So much has changed.

I get calls to the non emergency police department number asking for the time quite frequently.

Yes, I remember calling for the local time and temperature! LOL! With the internet we don't have a need for that anymore. It's just one more thing that has become obsolete with the advances in technology.
