I'm showing my age here, but does anyone else remember being able to dial a phone number to get the correct time? Some places even included weather. I wonder if there are any still active out there. 🕰⏱⏰

I remember that! And this will totally show my age (like I've tried to hide it?) - does anyone remember that phone numbers were stated in words for the first three numbers? I can recall Whitney-2798 as a phone number from my childhood. There was also 'Oxbow' as a prefix from my area. It was dialed in as WHI or OXB on the rotary dial. It made it much easier to remember phone numbers when I was a kid
Now I just ask Alexa for the time and weather since I don't wear a watch anymore.

I do remember that! Did anyone else here ever have a party line when growing up? We had one until I was in the 5th grade.

No, we never had a party line, and I didn't know anyone that did. I remember when people used to put locks on the dials so you couldn't call out. As kids, we got around that by tapping the hang-up buttons a few times and the operator would come on. Then we'd tell her what number we wanted to call.

Oh, here's another one. We used to be able to break into a call by calling the operator and telling her we had an emergency call. Is that still possible to do?

Yup.......... But I also remember operators. Me too! And party lines (as in sharing the phone line with other multiple customers). Here’s a fun article about the history of calling for time: www.google.com/amp/s/www.theatlantic.com/amp/article/488273/I also remember our phone number from when I was a kid. It started with “Harrison”. We later moved and it was ”Trinity”. Later shortened to “T”. Ah the memories. (Amazing particularly since I have days I can’t remember what I had for breakfast!). LOL

Yes, I remember that too, although in my area the word was only for the first two numbers. You know what? I think you are correct, it was just for the first two numbers. When I was trying to recall a few phone numbers, I kept putting in one extra number and figured my memory was just too faint. It was just OX and WH for those prefixes!

Hey, while we are going down memory lane, I remember not having a phone in my home at all. Actually until after I went to university. To get a phone message to my Dad, I had to call the general store in town. He went there every Tuesday and Saturday to sort mail for his postal delivery, so he could get back to me then--or meet the Greyhound bus to pick me up on Friday if I was coming home for the weekend.

I do remember that! Did anyone else here ever have a party line when growing up? We had one until I was in the 5th grade. I'm 40 and we had a party line. Only one other family on it. Not sure how old I was when it went away, definitely before I was a teenager, haha!

Yes, I remember "popcorn". I tried calling it some time back. Number's not in service. LOL! I remember party lines, dial locks and calling the operator for an "emergency" call, too.
Our prefix was GArfield.

Probably regional but for us it was calling "Tiger11". Just the way the numbers worked out in our area and what it was named, I guess. I remember dialing it all the time as a kid, especially if the power went out. Showing my age!

I remember party lines and dialing for the time. I also remember the time I called time and found out it was no more. My prefix when I was growing up was GArfield and my aunt's was HArrison. I also remember when the Princess phones came out...in COLORS!!!

Yes! We called it Time and Temp.
Remember 411 operators to get a phone number or address? I worked as a 411 operator for the Chicagoland area for 5 years in the 90’s.

Yep! SH-21212 (Sherwood)
In high school girls had to wear dresses or skirts. We couldn't wear slacks unless the temperature was below 15 degrees. Many winter mornings we would dial that number with our fingers crossed.

I remember all of that, too. Remember when Lisa (Green Acres) used to climb the telephone pole to answer the phone and there was often a party line?

I certainly do remember that. We had it in the UK too. And kudos to the pea who said, "At the tone, the time will be. . ." I had totally forgotten that bit. I can hear it in my mind now.
There's a song from the 70's by Janis Ian. One of the lyrics says, "The operator, she tells the time, it's good for a laugh." The song is called "In the Winter." It is unbearably sad but beautiful.
The next line says, "And for a dime I can talk to God, Dial a Prayer, are you there, do you care, are you there?" Anyone remember Dial a Prayer? That probably still exists; I know televangelists have prayer lines.
