My nephew (a middle schooler) decided he'd like an ipod for Christmas. I've looked at those and they're over 100 bucks. I see there are other no-name music players, some as inexpensive as $12.
Any recommendation?

IMO, no. My DH is was cheap and he used to used to buy no-brand cheap-o MP3 players. The sound quality is not good and they don't last that long. And you have to have compatible software to get the music on (it may not work with iTunes). DH purchased himself a real Ipod, then I was gifted one. Even I could tell the difference. Ipods are the only Apple products we use. Plus it depends on what he wants it for. Only music or to play games? The off brand ones I had could only play music/audiobooks - no games. Check Ebay or stalk the Black Friday sales for the real thing.

if he wants an ipod he will not be happy with not-an-ipod. So either buy the ipod or hand over the request to someone else who will buy it for him.

You can buy a used iPod or a deactivated Apple phone. Craigslist, ebay and stores are full of them. When I upgraded last time, I sold my iPhone 5 for $100. iPods should be much cheaper than that.

It depends what it's being used for. We bought our son a simple Mp3 player for $20 and I feel the music quality is great. It's not an iPod and I'm not expecting that quality. Honestly it does nothing more than play music. I'm looking to get one for myself for when I'm walking on my treadmill. I don't like to put too much on my phone so I don't really have any extra music or such on there.

I bought a simple MP3 player for around $25 last year for my mom for Christmas. I was quite surprised with the sound quality. It holds a charge for a long time and is easy to use.

If he's asking for an iPod, don't go with something no-name/cheap. They won't have the same quality or ease of use he's looking for. Check some of the 2nd hand electronic shops and see if they have cheaper refurbished iPods if you aren't willing to get what he's wanting in new.

Any recommendation? I'd go with apple simply because he is a middle school wanting what others have, which includes the branding. Ipod shuffles are less than $100 if all he wants is to play music (mp3). The Ipod touch is more but also has capabilities beyond just music. If he is wanting to play mp4 files he will need a touch. If it is more than you want to spend maybe someone else in the family will go in with you?

Thanks for the suggestions. The cost is a consideration only in wondering if it will get lost. But it seems most people feel the apple brand is best so that's what I'll go with.
Some of the ipods look like an iphone and cost almost $300. That's why I was asking. Under $100 or even $150 is fine.
