BBC "Zimbabwe's military has seized state TV, saying it is targeting people close to President Robert Mugabe for causing "social and economic suffering". A statement read out by a general on air denied it was a coup and said Mr Mugabe was safe, but did not say where. Heavy gun and artillery fire could be heard in northern parts of the capital Harare early on Wednesday. The army action comes after Mr Mugabe sacked Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa, amid a row over succession." www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-41992351

I won't lose any sleep if Robert Mugabe gets a taste of his own medicine.

Couldn't happen to a better man There were reports of lines of tanks on the streets a couple days ago but a coup was denied - cos ye know, there could be lots of reasons for having mile upon mile of tanks heading in his direction.

It's a shame it took them so long to take this action!

"Local" wisdom (South African sources) say this could go either way. No-one is sure yet whether the generals are there on RM's orders to push out some of his own cabinet who are set against Grace becoming the vice Pres, or whether it is a coup. Sadly, whether the recently deposed vice, RM and Grace or the generals end up in charge by the weekend, I see no relief for the citizens of this once great country. I fear they are all equally corrupt and greedy. There is no white knight (horrible irony, no offence intended) waiting in the wings. ETA: if anyone is interested, a journalist (S'can- @barrybateman) I respect last night recommended two other sources to follow on Twitter.

(FYI for others: @pol_sec_analyst and @djolivier). I had been scrolling through tweets and didn't know who to believe (e.g. reports that Grace has left the country and Mugabe will address the nation soon).

A friend in Harare said they are not sure whether it's a military coup or a bedroom coup -- meaning related to Grace's succession. As ScrapsontheRocks says, it is nonetheless unlikely to lead to any real positive change in Zim. Such a beautiful country that has been ravaged in mere decades by Mugabe's relentless greed.

The plot continues to thicken. BBC now reporting that Mugabe is under house arrest. Another report said his wife Grace was in custody as well. As much as I've wanted to see Mugabe gone for years, I agree with ScrapsontheRocks that if this coup goes through it won't bring improvement for the citizens. Such a beautiful country and wonderful people, it's heartbreaking to see what they've had to endure all these years. It doesn't matter how bad the tweet is compared to what people say here. When you are in a foreign country, especially a country run by a dictator like Mugabe, you do not have the freedom to say what you want about that government. I've known people to be shipped out of countries overnight for forgetting that as an American, your rights & freedoms stop as soon as you leave the US.

I’m guessing she either didn’t or didn’t think it would be that bad. She will be very lucky if she doesn’t spend her lives fr in jail there
