I wasn't quick enough in the volunteering for what to bring to Thanksgiving this year and ended up with the options of a (non potato or stuffing) side dish and dessert. I personally don't like pie, and the majority of the family attending doesn't like pumpkin pie. So I'm trying to think of something a bit "nicer" than brownies to bring. Considering a pecan pie but I do not know if anyone would really like it besides my husband. We are looking at 11-12 people.
Im hoping you all can help me come up with some ideas!

If not, and if you have a Costco near you, go there a buy one of their whatever-is-in-the-dessert-section desserts... apple pie, cheesecake, carrot cake, chocolate mousse, to name a few that I know ours sells. They are delicious and large enough to serve all those people. And you don't have to bake. Win-win, in my opinion anyway.

I'm making a pan of lemon bars to add to the pies. They are always popular.

Mocha Meringue PieThis is a favorite. I like it because the custard is one step - dump it all in and stir. I like it because the meringue is stabilized so it doesn't weep and travels very well. And it's feckin delicious.

I don't like pie either. I'm bringing apple and chocolate cream pie to my Aunt's house. I did that last year and everyone enjoyed them.

I am not a huge fan of pie OR of pumpkin but this is my FAVORITE all time dessert. My birthday is after Thanksgiving and lots of years my mom has made this at Thanksgiving as the dessert/birthday cake.
Pumpkin Spice Bars
For the bars:
4 eggs 2 cups granulated sugar 1 cup vegetable oil 1 can (15 oz) pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1 cup raisins, if desired (I don’t)
For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup butter or margarine, softened 2 to 3 teaspoons milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 4 cups powdered sugar 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans, if desired
Steps:
Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 15x10x1-inch pan with cooking spray.
In large bowl, beat eggs, granulated sugar, oil and pumpkin with wire whisk until smooth. Stir in flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. Stir in raisins if using. Spread in pan.
Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean and bars spring back when touched lightly in center. Cool completely, about 2 hours.
In medium bowl, beat cream cheese, butter, milk and vanilla with electric mixer on low speed until smooth. Gradually beat in powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, on low speed until smooth and spreadable. Spreading frosting over bars. Sprinkle with nuts. For bars, cut into 7 rows by 7 rows. Store covered in refrigerator.

I have a crustless apple pie recipe that's really good if you are interested. I can post it when I get home later. I don't like pie crust, so this is perfect and everyone seems to like it.

As for pies, pecan and french silk are the two alternate pie types at our thanksgiving table, but I would not mind seeing a chocolate cake there. Hm. Maybe I will buy a chocolate cake to take along. I also would not mind a coconut cream pie, a banana cream pie, or a cheesecake. (I am ambivalent towards pumpkin pie, love pecan, and find french silk waaaaaaaay too sweet.)

I'm making this (easy) cake:
Chip & Joanna Gaines’ Chocolate Chip Bundt Cake
1 (15.25-oz.) pkg. devil’s food cake mix 1 cup plain yogurt 4 large eggs 1 (3.4-oz.) pkg. vanilla instant pudding mix ½ cup plus 1 tbsp. vegetable oil, divided 1 cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips 2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa 2 tbsp. light corn syrup 1 cup powdered sugar, plus more for serving Fresh strawberries
1. Preheat oven to 350°. Combine cake mix, yogurt, eggs, ½ cup warm water, pudding mix and ½ cup oil in a large bowl. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed until just combined, about 30 seconds. Increase speed to medium, and beat until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Gently fold in chocolate chips. Pour mixture into a lightly greased and floured Bundt cake pan. Bake in preheated oven until a wooden pick inserted in center of cake comes out clean, 35 to 40 minutes.
2. Remove cake from oven, and cool in pan 10 minutes. Transfer cake from pan to wire rack; cool completely, about 1 hour.
3. Combine cocoa, 2 tablespoons water, corn syrup and remaining 1 tablespoon oil in a medium saucepan. Cook over low, stirring constantly, until blended, 1 to 2 minutes. Gradually add powdered sugar, whisking constantly, until smooth.
4. Drizzle glaze over cake. Sprinkle with additional powdered sugar. Serve with strawberries and vanilla ice cream, if desired.
Serves: 12 Active time: 10 minutes Total time: 1 hour, plus cooling

I made a lemon torte last year. It was a nice alternative. There will be no pumpkin pie at our thanksgiving this year, and I don't even feel bad about it.
Lemon Torte
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1/2 cup ground almonds/almond meal 2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup butter, room temperature 1 cup sugar 3 large eggs 1 tbsp lemon zest 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice (2-3 lemons)
Lemon Glaze 3 tbsp lemon juice 2 tsp lemon zest 1 1/4 cups confectioners’ sugar Preheat oven to 350F. Lightly grease a 9-inch round cake pan (or springform pan) and line the bottom with parchment paper. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, almond meal, baking powder and salt. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light. Beat in eggs one at a time, waiting until each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Beat in lemon zest. Mix in 1/3 of the flour mixture, followed by half of the lemon juice. Add another 1/3 of the flour mixture, then the rest of the lemon juice and the rest of the flour. Stir only until no streaks of flour remain and batter is uniform. Pour into prepared pan. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool pan in cake for 15 minutes. While the cake cools, whisk all glaze ingredients in a small bowl until smooth. Pour over cake, then let cake cool completely in pan. Serves 10.
It says it serves 10, but I always get a lot more servings out of it. A sliver really is enough.

The thing is, people love a good brownie, and I think it's a nice basic dessert that is pretty much guaranteed to disappear and is also a welcome leftover for the hostess. That said, even though I haven't been asked to bring a dessert, I am considering an apple cake or something else that's simple. Happy Thanksgiving!
