A man accidentally shot himself and his wife in their Tennessee church after he had taken his gun out during a discussion about weapons in places of worship, police said. The man, 81, and his wife, 80, both suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The incident happened Thursday afternoon as members of the First United Methodist Church in Tellico Plains -- about 60 miles southwest of Knoxville -- were gathered at the church for a pre-Thanksgiving lunch, Tellico Plains Police Department Chief Russ Parks told ABC News. The church members were discussing weapons during worship services on the heels of the shooting at a Texas church earlier this month that killed over two dozen people, Parks said, and "one of the gentlemen said, 'Well, I take my gun with me everywhere.' Great googly moogly. I saw that and just shook my head. Luckily it wasn't worse, even though that's pretty darn bad.

Though I bet if you ask an 80 yr old woman who went her entire life without a gunshot wound to her abdomen, that is up until her husband's ill-rehearsed show and tell goes horribly wrong, she'd probably tell us her potluck experience can not be topped.

no, guns don't kill or injure people, people kill or injure people. Guns are just like a screwdriver, a tool, no more dangerous.

I was being sarcastic Olan. I agree. Just like the thread a few weeks ago about the 16 year old boy who shot himself to death while cleaning a gun. 2 examples here of how owning a gun has caused harm and NOT safety.

Without the later added dead horse being beaten GIF, it didn't read as sarcasm at all. Sorry.

I worked for a woman who's husband was going a bit nutty. ( very sad because he was best person in that family).
Well she had a thick piece sheet of hardwood between her mattress and box spring. The husband would sit in his recliner watching tv and had a tendency to shoot at any noise. The woman could not roll over or get out of bed until he came to bed, for fear of getting shot. I think they ended loading his gun with blanks.
Yup when a person starts going south, the family needs to take if things like guns / cars/ pills/ gas stoves. Especially stoves. I know more people dead from a gas stove than a gunshot.

If only there had been someone else there with a gun to stop the stupidity.

For this reason, our church is requiring their safety committee members must have gun training before they can participate in this new program.

Pretty sure that if we're arming church-goers someone was supposed to shoot him at that point, right?

Yes, he shot someone! Show and tell with guns certainly is not a safe activity, it seems.

For this reason, our church is requiring their safety committee members must have gun training before they can participate in this new program. Are you leaving something out here, or is the safety committee the new program? If this is the case, then I just don’t have words. Community outreach program, check. Bingo night committee, check. Safety committee armed to the teeth in church, check. I don’t care how much training the safety committee gets, unless you are someone who deals with the potential of getting blown away on a daily basis, such as law enforcement or active duty military, you are just not adequately prepared for the types of unpredictable mass shootings we’ve seen.

Just because a BUILDING is a church doesn’t mean it is exempt from protection. A person that had a gun and chased down the Texas church shooter. If he hadn’t taken on the shooter, potentially he would have gone to another facility. Our church is taking this as a precaution. We have an area women’s drug recovery unit attending our church; thirty at our Sunday service. They all sit together, this makes us a target. We have already attended a program by the sheriff’s department. This program was specifically for church attendees. There were over 1,500 in attendance. The MOST I took away from the program was how to defend yourself without a gun. I am not personally going to be part of the safety team because I do not have the experience needed to use the gun. Our church is just in the beginning stages of forming a team.
