Trump starts paying his own legal bills on Russia probe: attorneysReuters REUTERS 17 NOV 2017 AT 14:23 ETPresident Donald Trump has begun paying his own legal bills related to the Russia investigation and will no longer use political donations to his reelection campaign or the Republican Party to cover the costs, his attorneys confirmed. *************** The administration is also working with others to establish a fund for current and former staffers, Special White House counsel Ty Cobb said. Dowd said Don McGahn, the White House counsel, and campaign lawyer Ben Ginsberg of Jones Day are working to structure that fund, which would be subject to rules that prohibit staff from receiving gifts or pro bono legal service.
The president is exempt from those rules, Dowd said. “The geniuses are working on it,” Dowd said. “If it passes muster with the tax lawyers and accountants, then it has to pass muster with the Office of Government Ethics.” He added, “The president is worried about staffers who have good lawyers and they can’t afford them.” ************** www.rawstory.com/2017/11/trump-starts-paying-his-own-legal-bills-on-russia-probe-attorneys/About time he pays his bills. He had said that he would pay all the bills for staff too. Guess not, trying to get around the law that is already in place!

I wish Congress would pay their own bills for settlement of civil sexual harassment claims rather than using taxpayer money

I know it's off topic. But the thread title just screamed politicians using our money to pay for their private misdeeds.

Nothing makes a person want to cooperate more than the thought of hundreds of thousands of dollars In legal fees hanging over your head. I'm sure certain staff we're told to stick to the script and Trump Will cover attorney fees.

Yes, worried about them talking although in most cases many do tell the truth under oath, and to Congress(?), their action is swift!

I don’t think it’s off topic. They all should pay their own bills unless the offense is related to the requirements of their job.

navymomk9 said: Yup. Believe me, I have always had sympathy for lower level political staff who have to testify - so have to get a pricey DC lawayer. I remember reading how low Bill Clinton's secretary was on the GS (civil service) pay schedule, but she had to lawyer up to testify about - what? - gifts her boss bought for Monica. It's just not fair. Those bills could destroy somebody financially. On the other hand, one's boss (a probable subject of the proceedings) shouldn't be paying. Way too hinky.

Some WH aides anxious over Russia probe despite reassurances from Trump lawyer: report BY JULIA MANCHESTER - 11/19/17 06:06 PM EST Various White House aides have expressed concern regarding special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing probe into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, despite reassurances from White House lawyer Ty Cobb, according to The Washington Post. The Post reported that some White House aides have taken comfort in Cobb's reassurances that the probe will wrap up soon, and that Mueller has so far treated those he has interviewed "fairly." However, others view the reassurances as "naive," according to the newspaper. While Trump reportedly likes Cobb's reassurances, others close to him have expressed concerns about the lawyer, the Post reported. Former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon has pressed Trump to hire an experienced criminal defense attorney instead, arguing that Cobb and his team don't compare to Mueller's seasoned team of lawyers, according to the Post. The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment. A source close to the White House told the Post that staffers nervously joke with each other, saying, "Good morning. Are you wired?" more at link: thehill.com/homenews/administration/361138-some-wh-aides-anxious-over-russia-probe-despite-reassurances-from
