The day hasn't even started and I'm already annoyed! The drop off situation at our HS is apparently a nightmare. I say apparently, because I've never experienced it. We are lucky enough to live near the *catwalk* that the kids who walk to school use to get on campus. I've always dropped my son off there.
Today is the first day of school and they're doing roadwork on the patch of road right before the catwalk, so they've blocked the road on both sides - no in or out. Really? You had all freakin' summer to work on that patch of road and you pick the first day of school? Really?
Please tell me this is not an omen for the year . . .

I am a lucky parent. I never had to "drop off" my kids at school. They rode the bus when they were little and started driving as freshmen.
It's a small district, so I don't think the drop off thing was ever an issue for the very few that do take their kids to school.
Sounds like a complete nightmare in some places though!

I picked up my DS yesterday from his first day of high school. He usually rides the bus, but we needed him home in a hurry yesterday. I could not believe the rudeness of the drivers in the pick-up line. It was the FIRST DAY and parents were flipping people off and using horrid language. What a great start to the year. . .

Today was our first day and DH is traveling so I had to do drop off. I wanted to go all Mr. Mom on some of those parents. "YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!!!!" Get in the line and creep up with the rest of us. Only the school busses are supposed to drive up on the left and cut in at the front (where you aren't supposed to be dropping off btw). With few exceptions, your kid has been going to this school now for years so you should know how to do it.

Reading y'all's vents, I am SO glad that DH teaches in DS's school so they get in early and I don't have to deal with this crap.

High school? Drop the kid off a few blocks away and let them walk. I am sure that the setup at your school is annoying and inconvenient, but I think that high-school-aged kids are old enough that it isn't that necessary for the school to organize a good drop-off line.
Elementary schools, different story.

OMG, the same thing over here at our elementary. All summer long it's driving bliss, and they choose the first day of school to start tearing up the streets. In some areas, an entire roadside is blocked so cars are trying to travel both directions on the other side. Orange cones everywhere. No one directing traffic. I would drive 100 miles out of my way to avoid making a left turn.
School starts at 7:45 and I've been taking my daughter when the doors open at 7:15 to avoid most of the madness. My high schooler goes later, so I leave her at home and then take her when all if the madness has cleared up. My middle schooler leaves to walk just before I take the elementary aged daughter. Luckily we just missed the 3 years of road widening in front of middle school just finished last year.
So yes, I know what you're going through. And feel your pain. Good luck with it all!

My daughter goes to a private school and as I was driving her in today they were paving the sidewalks near the public elementary school. They had the traffic down to one lane! What a cluster F! The walkers had to walk on the road and the traffic to get into the school was backed up for about a 1/4 mile! I felt so bad for those parents and bus drivers.

Before we moved to a house three blocks from the elementary school I used to drive ds, with younger dd, and park a block or so away from the school. Then we walked down. Rain, snow, whatever, that's what we did. I was NOT going to get into that mess, even without road construction!

Move to a teeny tiny town in the boonies like we did this summer. (We moved from Raleigh.) This tiny town cracks me up sometimes. They mass texted parents on the first day of school asking parents to be patient about the "traffic." Their idea of a lot of traffic is 20 cars at arrival/dismissal. I can drop off or pick up my girls in 10 mins.

We go to the Costco near here (at the Waterfront, for any locals). We pull in to the parking lot and my mom says "oh, look at all the cars" and I'm like "um, where???" She sees a parking lot half full and thinks it's a lot, and I see a parking lot half empty with TONS of spots to choose from! rofl. I'm from Northern Virginia and I shop at the Pentagon Costco (for you locals) and that parking lot is an absolute nightmare.

that's idiotic, i'm sorry you had to deal with that! this is the first time our kids aren't riding the bus, instead we drop off an pick up. pick-up is at 3:45. yesterday i rush from work, get there exactly at 3:45 and they are the only kids in line.. no other kids are even walkign in the parking lot, they are long gone. i ask, "ok, what time am i supposed to come because it's obviously not 3:45!" and they tell me that "oh, sometimes they like to let them out a little early." WTH, i'm already leaving work earlier than my boss would like to do this, and now my kids get to deal with the humiliation of being the last ones to be picked up? when i'm on time?? grr. Also, i thought this was going to be a vent on "first day of school homework". my 4th grader had 1 page to do last night. asked him if he had homework, he said yes, he sat down and did it at home, NBD. it was super easy, not a tough assignment at all. then i see 3 of his classmate's mom's bitching on facebook about how unfair it is, how their snowflakes are crying/grumbling/so upset. and later at soccer practice for the same age kids, overhear 2 other moms complaing about the same thing. now i know, there are exceptions- like 5 pages of problems+book reading+this+that and some teachers go crazy. but it was 1 page. how much you want to bet your kids are all upset partly because you're all upset and touting the unfairness?

So many HS around here have long driveways, so once you turn in, you are trapped in a 30-60 minute crawl as it is one-way with no escape. First days are the worst with all the new students.
I get to miss the morning insanity and do afternoon pick up at the nearest shopping center. The boys are big enough to walk a half mile and our weather is dry 95% of the time.

LOL I feel your pain! They decided to grind and pave the 3 major roads I have to drive every day. It is a complete nightmare. Thankfully I know all the back ways to get to school so we won't be impacted like most people.
As for the HS, oh I have a few choice words for the parents who think they don't have to wait in line. They drive in the out so they don't have to wait, but end up jamming up the people who are trying to leave. The school put a guard shack in to keep people from driving in the out lane. I saw security blocking people from coming in the wrong way.

It would be ideal for every single school to be located in an area where sidewalks are abundant and traffic is low, however this isn't always the case.

I hear you. And I totally agree. 3 brand new construction projects began today in the town and all three are in front of a school. Who's idea was it to start those now as opposed to 2 months ago? ( and in this case they have been approved and all for months so there's no excuse )

You all do realize that even if the road work was scheduled for another time, if there are weather related delays or receiving needed materials or broken equipment, etc, that backs up the work dates. People do not do things on purpose just to p*** you off.

I was just peeved that they were working on that particular street on the first day of school. FWIW, I've never picked my kid up from HS. He walks rain or shine. People crack you up, don't they? Our school is supposed to get sidewalks (finally the school is 35 years old!). They had all summer. They decided they are going to start to build them in two weeks. You know because ripping up the side of the road where people walk their kids to school and everyone parks is so much more convenient than building them in the last two and a half months when no one is there. Who plans this stuff?

It's the same people who began construction on the large neighborhood park about a week before summer began here! Oh, and it's almost done, now that school started last week...

Being that my kids are 3 years apart, this is the only year they will be at high school together. Luckily, I don't need the car right now and DD can drive DS in with her.

Don't miss those days at all. They have been making the turn lane in front of the HS longer all summer. Too late for my kids to take advantage of but will certainly help with the neighborhood traffic flow.

My poor darlings had to ride the bus to school, both ways, every day. After they turned 16 I got them a car but before then unless they had a dr. appt or something, it was the big yellow bus.

Oh, I hear you re the timing. Last year our middle school and the adjacent early childhood learning center had a *major parking lot project that they didn't start until well into the summer. I think they managed to finish the day before school started.
