I am throwing the idea around of having a holiday decorating contest for our COA. I have city reps who will judge at no cost.
However, we have never had a holiday decorating contest. If you have any input, I would appreciate it.
-Categories: traditional lighting, contemporary lighting, best animated display, ect.....? -Token gift for judges? Suggestions? They get a lot of certificates or traditional business gifts in their line of work. Other suggestions would be great. -How much time between flyer going out and end of contest? A month? -Refreshments? -Prizes?
What works for you? Any suggestions would be great!

I would get the notice out right after Thanksgiving.End of contest - maybe 12/22? or the 2nd week of December? How many people do you think would participate? 10? 20? How elaborate do people get for the holidays? Our neighborhood doesn't really do animated displays, so that category wouldn't work here, but if a lot do it by you, that would be appropriate. If it's 1 or 2 houses, that looks like they get an unfair advantage. Maybe the gifts for judges could be homemade baked goods? Bottle of champagne for New Year's Eve?

What about a Most like the Griswold category?

fun idea - if your neighbourhood is diverse, perhaps a category for non-Christmas winter holiday themed?

I would have the flyers go out now and have the judging around December 15th. Most people who decorate outside have their stuff up pretty early. The judges aren't going to want to do the judging too close to Christmas. Plus, if you do the judging early enough and announce the winners, everyone will have time to get out and see the winning displays before people start leaving town for Christmas.
I'd give the judges a small token of appreciation. If they are local politicians, they are probably happy to judge for the publicity.
Good luck! It's a fun idea.

I would have some fun categories, too...
The Clark W Griswold award The Peanuts Award Animation Station - most animated decor etc.
I would also suggest that people submit applications...maybe not the first year but you don't wanna offend anyone that didn't intend to enter the contest. If this is all in good fun, I'd give the judges a snow globe or something along those lines. You could probably find a trophy shop to either have a few made up pretty inexpensively or find your own and have them make you some brass plates to attach to some.

In DDs neighborhood, you cannot win unless your are a member of Homeowners' Association. The give out 1,2 3 and honorable mention. Judging is usually by the 2nd weekend in December.
