Ryan Zinke statement on why Florida is off the list for new oil drilling...
“President Trump has directed me to rebuild our offshore oil and gas program in a manner that supports our national energy policy and also takes into consideration the local and state voice. I support the governor’s position that Florida is unique and its coasts are heavily reliant on tourism as an economic driver. As a result of discussion with Governor Scott’s and his leadership, I am removing Florida from consideration for any new oil and gas platforms,” Zinke said in a statement Tuesday night. The statement came shortly after Zinke met with Scott to discuss offshore drilling.“
Forget I live in CA and I’m that very partial to the beaches in Northern CA. I looked at the map of states that would be affected by the expanded oil drilling and I see a “our beaches are unique and the areas are also heavily reliant on tourism as an economic driver” argument for each of the states.
Jerks.

I don't understand how the laws work that pertain to this.

AP... “BREAKING: Trump administration says it won't allow oil drilling off the coast of Florida, bowing to pressure from governor.” Of course Florida would be spared. Old tiny hands didn’t want to take the chance they would drill off Mar a Lago. NPR has the story that it’s in deference to the guy making a political run at governor

“BREAKING: In the next 48 hours, the Trump Administration is planning to issue policy on how states can stop people from receiving Medicaid coverage if they don’t have a job.
And they plan to put this in action in their first state— Kentucky.”
I read a story about a trump voter who was a roofer and fell off the roof and now he can’t work. His medical coverage is through Medicaid.
Its this sort of thing is why I will no longer vote for a Republican. The Republicans in Congress don’t care if this guy loses his medical care because he can’t work.

If anything it showed he knows nothing. because he actually strung a few sentences together in a somewhat coherent fashion, maybe?? But he still had to have someone correct him when he said 'yeah, sure' to Diane Feinstein's comment about DACA..."yes, I like that" ..."uh, Mr. President, what I think she meant was Y, not X..." (meaning no, you're not supposed to say you like that.)

Dutch reporters grill new Trump ambassador over past comments on MuslimsBY JULIA MANCHESTER - 01/10/18 01:49 PM EST Dutch reporters grilled U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra during a press conference at the Hague Wednesday over comments he made in the past about Muslims in Europe. Reporters could be heard saying "This is not how it works" and "This is the Netherlands, you have to answer questions" during the contentious briefing. The journalists were questioning Hoekstra on claims he made in a 2015 interview on the Dutch television program Nieuwsuur, in which he said an Islamic movement was generating chaos in Europe and that extremists in the Netherlands were burning cars and politicians. Trump holds sweepstakes to win dinner at Mar-a-LagoBY MAX GREENWOOD - 01/10/18 05:58 PM ESTThe Trump campaign is holding a sweepstakes offering a private dinner with President Trump in Palm Beach, Fla. The sweepstakes, according to a campaign email and online entry forms, will offer a winning entrant a flight to Palm Beach to have dinner with the president and his family at "Florida's most exclusive club." While neither the email nor the entry forms say exactly where the dinner will take place, Michael Glassner, the Trump campaign's executive director, told Politico that it will be at Mar-a-Lago, Trump's private club in Palm Beach. "All it takes is any contribution of $1 or more before the deadline to be automatically entered for this once-in-a-lifetime chance," the email reads. Trump's two adult sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, will attend the dinner, according to the email. Eric's wife, Lara Trump, will be there as well. The sweepstakes announcement touts the event as a celebration of the first anniversary of Trump's inauguration as president. It's set to take place Jan. 20. The Trump campaign has held similar contests in the past, including one in September to win dinner with the president in New York and another in June for dinner in Washington, D.C. thehill.com/homenews/campaign/368406-trump-holds-sweepstakes-to-win-dinner-at-mar-a-lagoHow did I Miss June and September?!?!?! I thought it was illegal to charge people to enter sweepstakes. Maybe that doesn't apply to political contributions. I guess I've seen the Democrats do it, too.

“Good news: Toyota and Mazda announce giant new Huntsville, Alabama, plant which will produce over 300,000 cars and SUV’s a year and employ 4000 people. Companies are coming back to the U.S. in a very big way. Congratulations Alabama!”
Alabama is a right to work state which more than likely means the new plant won’t be a union plant. Which means low pay and few if any benefits for the workers.
I checked and at the end of October there were 6M job openings in the US close to the 6.2M that were open at the end of summer.
It seems to me the problem isn’t enough jobs it’s making sure the jobs are well paying jobs in the areas that need them most.

linkFrom LawFareBlog... “Trump Tweets Against a Key National Security Priority” “When the history of President Donald Trump’s use of Twitter is written, there will be a stiff competition for his most destructive, most irresponsible tweet. A strong contender for that less-than-august honor came this morning, when the President of the United States tweeted this: “House votes on controversial FISA ACT today.” This is the act that may have been used, with the help of the discredited and phony Dossier, to so badly surveil and abuse the Trump Campaign by the previous administration and others?”It is, to be sure, not Trump’s most rhetorically outlandish tweet. It is not an attack on a person, or a national or ethnic group. But this tweet is nothing less than an active intervention by the President at a delicate moment in time against the national security of the country he leads. If there is a defense of it, it can only be that Trump may not have understood what he was saying and may simply have been parroting something he heard on Fox News. Perhaps following an early morning staff intervention, Trump seemed to recognize his error and tried to undo some of the damage, tweeting: “ With that being said, I have personally directed the fix to the unmasking process since taking office and today’s vote is about foreign surveillance of foreign bad guys on foreign land. We need it! Get smart!”Describing the following on comment as “too little, too late” would be an understatement. The Trump administration needs to take far more aggressive steps to undo the damage, and they need to do it fast. Allow us to explain. For now, let’s leave aside what would otherwise be notable about Trump’s original tweet: the lies in it. There is zero evidence that the previous administration conducted surveillance against the Trump campaign—much less that it used Section 702 authorities to do so. To the contrary, it is inconceivable 702 was used as the President alleges. Under normal circumstances, we would spend some time on a malicious presidential lie about the prior administration, his own intelligence community, and the men and women who make up both. But today, that’s a secondary problem. For present purposes, the much more urgent matter is that the President here seemed to be at least implicitly opposing reauthorization of 702—and doing so on precisely the day the House of Representatives is to vote on the matter and when the outcome of the vote is uncertain. Let’s not mince words here: The lapse of Section 702 surveillance capabilities, even for a short period of time, would constitute a full-fledged national security emergency. NSA is on record as saying that “collection under FAA Section 702 is the most significant tool in the NSA collection arsenal for the detection, identification, and disruption of terrorist threats to the U.S. and around the world.” Section 702 authorizes the government to target foreigners reasonably believed to be located outside the United States for foreign intelligence purposes. It is strictly supervised by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which reviews annual certifications and procedures controlling collection, dissemination, and use of 702 information. Those procedures are designed to especially protect the information of “US Persons,” a legal term that covers US citizens, anyone located inside the US, as well as categories of individuals like green card holders and lawful permanent residences. Section 702 cannot be used to target any US person. It cannot be used to target anyone in the United States. It cannot be used to target an American political campaign. There is genuine and legitimate controversy over whether additional protections should apply, particularly when it comes to post-collection queries of data, and whether existing protections should be codified in law, instead of in Attorney General’s guidelines. Even most critics, however, do not deny the general value of 702. That is to say, none of the following statements are remotely controversial among serious people: Information derived from 702 collection is the single largest contributor to the Presidential Daily Brief. 702 information is used to protect US soldiers on the battlefield. 702 information keeps US decision-makers apprised of the intentions of adversary nations. 702 information helps federal agents detect and prevent terror attacks on US soil. None of that is in dispute, even among advocates for reforms across the political spectrum. House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, whose committee proposed dramatic legislative changes, nevertheless called it a “strong and effective national security tool.” The Senate Republican Policy Committee notes there hasn’t been “a single intentional violation of the law.” Third Way, in a paper advocating some reforms, says 702 is a “critical tool.” The Washington Post editorial page, while also supporting reforms, referred to 702 as a “crucial surveillance program” which Congress should not allow to lapse. We could go on, but you get the idea. Yet the politics of 702 have become exceptionally delicate. The government simply can’t afford to lose it. And the periodic sunset provisions give privacy and civil liberties advocates powerful leverage to force debate on changes. Despite acknowledging the general value of Section 702, privacy advocates have long demonstrated a willingness to play brinkmanship with the law. And support for clean reauthorization and various proposed reforms do not divide cleanly across party lines. The politics have grown particularly complicated this year, largely because of Trump and his claims of illegal “wire tapping” against him by President Obama. House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes, otherwise a supporter of 702 and more-robust national security authorities in general, leapt to stoke the chaos by creating the so-called “unmasking” controversy to justify Trump’s wiretapping claims. Then Nunes inserted that controversy into the 702 reauthorization debate by insisting on including provisions related to unmasking practices in the law. That helped gum up the works sufficiently that Congress was not able to agree on a long term solution prior to the December 31, 2017 statutory lapse and instead bought themselves another three weeks to find a fix. The newest clock runs out on Jan. 19. Which brings us to yesterday. Members of both the House and Senate seem to have hashed out the broad outlines of compromise legislation, under which 702 would be reauthorized on a long-term basis albeit with some additional privacy and transparency provisions. Dissenters in the House, including NSA critics Justin Amash and Zoe Lofgren have offered alternative legislation in the form of an amendment, set to go to the floor today. The “USA Rights Act” as it is known, is operationally unacceptable to the intelligence community and FBI for very good reasons. This is a sufficiently high legislative priority that the White House rushed out a Statement of Administration Policy late last night: The Administration supports House passage of the House Amendment to S. 139, the FISA Amendments Reauthorization Act of 2017.
Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 provides authorities to collect critical intelligence on terrorist organizations, weapons proliferators, and other foreign adversaries that is vital to keeping the Nation safe. Reauthorizing these authorities before they expire on January 19, 2018, in a manner that preserves their effectiveness, is a top priority of the Administration.
The Administration would prefer a clean and permanent extension of section 702 of FISA. The bill would, however, provide for a six-year reauthorization of section 702, a critical extension that will keep America safe from those who wish to do us harm.
If the House Amendment to S. 139 were presented to the President in its current form, his advisors would recommend that he sign the bill into law.
But the deal was emphatically not done. Knowledgeable people both inside and outside the government (and on both sides of the aisle) were expressing some degree of concern even last night—a reflection of the consequences that might result from a lapse and the delicacy of the politics. It was against this background that President Trump tweeted what effectively amounts to a green light to those who want to either oppose 702 reauthorization outright or to support the Amash-Lofgren amendment—and to do so based on a mendacious conspiracy theory rooted in the Russia investigation. Why did he do it? We cannot say for sure. But the President’s tweet followed this clip that aired on Fox and Friends—which Trump is known to watch. This clip also ran this morning: In other words, President Trump tweeted lies against his own intelligence community in the course of signaling opposition to a legislative priority of his own administration on a crucial national security priority at an especially delicate moment in time. Then he tried to take it back. We don’t hold much hope for ever calling on President Trump to do the right thing. But there is still time for him to do more to ameliorate the mess he has created here—by making clear both publicly and privately that he, like the administration he leads, supports 702 reauthorization and understands that the law is not about domestic spying but about urgent national security collection on behalf of the country.”

New Yorker Magazine..
During his morning Executive Time, President Trump took a well-deserved break from his long hours of document study to watch Fox News. The segment featured one of the talking heads urging Trump to oppose the House bill reauthorizing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). The president immediately tweeted out his alarmed confusion that the House was apparently on the verge of approving the very law the sinister Deep State had used to “tapp” his phones:
Why, yes, it is that bill. Ideally, Trump would be posing questions like this to his own advisers, rather than to the entire world. The president’s alarm was unfortunate, since the Trump administration strongly supports reauthorization of this law. It has sent its highest-ranking security officials to lobby Congress for reauthorization, and reiterated its endorsement of the law as recently as last night.
The source of Trump’s confusion may be that he has taken seriously the Republican talking points about the Deep State, failing to realize that it’s disingenuous propaganda designed to cover up misdeeds by his campaign. Republicans don’t actually object to the counterintelligence functions of the government as a whole. They merely want to discredit their specific application to the Trump campaign’s collusion with Russia. They don’t want the president blowing up the bill right before the vote they labored carefully to assemble.”
”Stable Genius” 😀.
