I can see in 10 years from now we're going be looking at our pages an scratching our heads. Why did I do that? Kind of like cutting out pictures in shapes ect.

I have pages from 10 years ago that I look at and wonder why I forgot the embellishments and who was this Susan Branch person? In 10 years I'll probably flip through my albums and say "and this was my splatter, puffy sticker and embellishment cluster phase." It's kind of an evolution... who knows what will be "the thing" in 10 years

I'm sure there will be a lot of trends that will have us scratching our heads and wondering. And, I'm sure that putting a tiny photo on a big page will be one of them too. I'll try all of the trends, though. The fear of looking ridiculous for doing something silly and fun doesn't have as strong a hold on me now as it did when I was younger.

I remember Susan Branch and her stickers! I used to love the. Also Debbie Mumm and her papers and stickers. Yes, the pages look dated but I still like them. And my kids were small so the cutesy theme is OK for the pages.

Good riddance. I hate the splatter! Me too. Also not a watercolor fan. Having said that though, I am sure there are other things on my layouts that will be dated in the future!

I love your title even though I like splatters and did them before they were cool.

I am a splatters fan too. Love to use my mist and splatter stamps on my layouts.

I am doing this because it is fun. I refuse to judge myself--or others--for playing with the products at hand that speak to us at this moment.
Of course, I am someone who doesn't laugh at myself for fashion or hairstyle choices I made 40 years ago. It was in style, and I rocked it. Enough said!

I also love my splatters. I may look back and wonder why I did them but I've done that with so many of the techniques I've tried over the years.

I don't like the use of the word dated in this regard. It is all going to be dated at some point. We bought stuff on trends and we used stuff manufactured by companies who changed products up so we'd keep buying, kwim? I think it is just a matter of attitude, really. We think it is dated because companies tried to make us think that way just to turn a buck.
If someone is that worried about their albums looking dated, they probably should stick to photo albums. LOL
Now, if in 15 years, your living room looks the same in your pictures, then maybe worried about something being dated! LOL

Ah, yes. The Coluzzled oval picture layouts. The large decotated tags. The famous sticker sneeze. Got ‘em all. I love going through my old layouts and seeing how trends and styles have changed. It’s one of the things that keeps it interesting for me

LOL I like my living room and my furniture is placed where it works for my room and they are classic pieces of good cherry wood. No need to reinvent the wheel when it still looks good. The fact that I live in a 97 year old house probably has some impact on my ideas of "dated". I actually repainted my living room after we moved in and discovered that the color I picked was probably the original living room color based on what I found behind the electrical face plates.

I think people will be more confused as to why tigers, pineapples, cactus and flamingos made it onto layouts that don’t have photos of those things...

The thing is, the pictures are going to look dated too. In some ways that's part of the fun. A local portrait studio put up senior pictures that they had taken in the past decade or so and it was amazing how dated the older ones looked even though they weren't actually old. (It didn't do a great job of promoting their business, tbh). Photography styles change, hairstyles and clothes change even faster (usually), even the coloring and the format changes - filtered square instagram photos are going to look as dated as my parents round-cornered pink-faded square photos in my baby albums. But that's part of what anchors everything in its time and place. Future visual historians are going to be able to date photos by when IG changed their filtering options ;P
If the design follows good principles it probably won't matter anyway - the eye will be drawn to the photo and words and the rest will just be decoration. And hopefully people will be more interested in the photos and the memories and the fact that they were captured and preserved anyway.
I get what you mean - I prefer a simple classic look in most things - but I don't see any need to worry if people are having fun and making pages, even if they are splattered and decorated with ridiculous tacos and tigers and mustaches. Especially since (unlike those film photos that got cut into awkward shapes) our current photos are extremely plentiful and easy to reprint at will.

LOL There was a decorated vintage car show at the holiday event we attended tonight. I buy cute vintage things to decorate with. Maybe all of us stash hoarders are just a step ahead collecting pieces that will be seen as nostalgic and fun later. Your living room comment made me laugh, and think of unchanged hairstyles!

When DH looks at some of our albums from 15 years ago...very plain, embellishment free with handwritten journaling...his comment was..."Oh, back then, you didn't know how to scrapbook."

Just read about my living room shouldnt look like it did 15 years ago...well, mine is lovely and am delighted with it...if you have classic well designed furniture, it looks good after many years. The Ikea, Pottery Barn look will be a thing of the past one of these days...sort of like the red accent wall period. The big push for using gray for everything is already on the way out according to the decorating magazines.

I did the splatter thing when I started in 1995, but it wasn't mists. It was that marker air brush tool that has made a comeback. I don't mind the splatters as much as the photos cut into shapes. Never again.

The large decotated tags. I still love them! I'm also a simple scrapper and my embellishments are minimal.

I've never been a trendy scrapbooker, so there aren't any splatters in my books. And, although I watercolor on my cards, I don't do it in my scrapbooks. My stamping, art journaling, and scrapping styles are different. I think many people look to the "celebrities" for ideas, so when they stop splattering, so will many scrapbookers. (Not judging.)
I don't worry about whether or not my pages will look outdated in years to come. After cleaning out my mother's house, where she lived for 68 years, we discovered many old pictures that I'd never seen. The best thing about those pictures is how dated they are! They're precious connections to people and decades that came before me, and I only wish they had written their stories to accompany their photos. Those would have been amazing to read!

It is so funny to watch the industry and trends evolve!! I look back in my albums and think holy sticker vomit....or what shape is that photo exactly?? I think it is all part of the process - like decorating homes and fashion trends - it all ebbs and flows with the times.
