So this is very new territory for us - both our girls have somebody special in their lives this Christmas.
Oldest DD's girlfriend is from Delaware (but attends University here in Ontario), so she will be going home for Christmas. And middle DD's boyfriend will be here Christmas Day and staying until Boxing Day. We would really like to get something for both of them.
But what? I will quiz my kids to see what they think, but any outside ideas would be most helpful.

I would give gift certificates to go to the movies for 2 + the popcorn/extra. Buy the giftcard at Costco.

How long have they been together? What do they like to do together?

For the GF from Delaware, how about a box of local things - locally made candy, socks with Ontario on them, that sort of thing?
I love the movie gift card idea!

This is a great idea lostinspace! I was going to put together a goodie basket (honey, popcorn treats, homemade jelly, etc.) but wanted something to add to it. This is perfect!

DS's girlfriend is getting film and lots of accessories for her Instax camera. She likes taking fun photos and putting them up in her dorm. When somebody is new to an area I always look for local things to share with them whether it's a local food option (locally roasted coffee beans for the coffee drinker, goodies from the caramel shop in town, etc), a local experience (locally owned restaurant, bakery, coffee shop) or a local sports team. <--Award for most uses of the word "local" in a sentence goes to me!

Given your profession, I recommend a box containing a small cake or tin filled with decorated holiday cookies.
Other ideas for thoughtful, practical, non-personal gifts include a gas, Target, iTunes, or other gift card or pair of gloves, earmuffs, &/or scarf.
HTH, & happy holidays!

My advice is whatever you do, don't go overboard. My nephew had just started dating a girl last Christmas and her parents gave him some very nice Christmas presents. It made my nephew very uncomfortable because he assumed the girl had led her parents to believe the relationship was much more serious than it was. It resulted in a very awkward conversation and they broke up shortly after that.

I just saw a really cute (and super easy to make) photo frame that I'm going to make for my grandson's girlfriend. I'm going to give it to her with either a gas or Dunkies gift card in place of a picture.
