variety.com/2017/film/reviews/the-rape-of-recy-taylor-review-1202633883/"The driver of the car, who confirmed the identities of the other six men, said he did not rape Taylor “because he knew her.” It speaks to the truth of an unexpectedly poignant moment later on, when interviewee Crystal Feimster, an associate professor at Yale, is visibly moved trying to comprehend the rapists’ mindset, and how they just “didn’t see” Taylor — as in, they could not comprehend this black woman, frightened and brutalized and begging to be let go home to her child, as a person."

The rape of any woman is a terrible thing. I mentioned in a post elsewhere only the other day that my grandmother was gang raped as a 14 year old child.

That poor woman Something that struck me while reading this... How strange in those days white people refused to drink from the same water fountains or use the same restrooms as black people, yet some men would do something like this that is actually the most exposed contact you can have with another person. It's disgusting and vile - sit at the back of the bus, but I'm going to violate you anyway. God bless her... I wish I could hug her and tell her I'm sorry for what she went through.

Either way, they were less than human. They could be bossed around and used for whatever purposes. No reason to give them any sense of dignity or respect.

Wow. Such a tough read. That poor woman, her family, and her community. They knew all along there would be no justice for Racy. None. Zero. Zilch. Rape is about power. The rapists were demonstrating their power over her not only with the brutal rapes, but with the knowledge there would no consequences what so ever.
Would the year of the sexual harassment bandaid being ripped off and exposed bring her some form of relief? I hope a small amount; but remember it is affluent white men going after mostly white women here.
BUT I think the stain of the murders of unarmed black boys and men and women by police and the not guilty verdict weigh heavier on her mind. Because not much has changed if they are still dying after being pulled over for a burnt out tail light. The fear of not surviving is a daily reality for the black community. Just ask the families of Sandra Bland, Trevon Martin, or Tamir Rice.
If Doug Jones wins tomorrow then maybe the scale is tipping to the right side of social justice. If not we have got to get our shit together and actively resist.

In this case, the victim was chosen because she was black, and powerless, but I think that the rape of any woman dehumanizes that woman, especially in a gang rape.
I cannot imagine what she has endured and survived.

I've always wondered this too. White men have been raping black women for decades by the time Recy walks home from church in 1944. By then they've developed a taste or at least recognized no punishment will come from brutally raping a black woman. We still see this play out present day. Enslaved African women were also forced to be primary caretakers of white babies so I don't think there was ever a real fear of the "dirtiness" of black people. And while I can't claim to know exactly what goes on in the minds of racist white men and women, in my experience it isn't necessarily that they don't want you in the pool because they think you inferior, but actually the opposite. They don't want you in the pool because they know when you do, they won't be number 1 anymore. Master-Enslaved African
