Since enough of us have seen the movie. Let's discuss the good, the bad and the ugly.
My number one problem is that they tried to do too much. The Finn-Rose sidebar plot could have been completely cut out or shortened. I am sure it is setting up for the next movie, but it took too long.
They beat the themes over our head.
If Laura Dern was on the ship and some big wig, wouldn't Poe have known who she was.
Laura Dern seemed to be in a trance. That was the worst Star Wars performance since Hayden Christiansen.
The Snokes scene was almost identical to the Darth Vadar taking out Palpatine in Episode VI.
I did love when Rey and Kylo Ren took out the red guys.
The action scenes were amazingly filmed.
The red planet was awesome!
And yes, I a was a sucker for the cute birds.

I was meh on the birds, but I want one of those foxes! I agree they tried to cram too much in. The whole Laura Dern thing was weird. She didn't fit in. The bridging thing was overdone for me. I think we will find out that Rey's parents were not junkers at all. She's too strong. She's a main character's daughter. Also, I totally guessed the "secret" to Luke's appearance at the fight as soon as he appeared.

Who is rey?
I wonder if poe and ben are brothers.
Finally Leia uses the force. How many movies to late?
I love Finn and rose.
It makes me sad that ben is bad.
I liked that yoda burned the tree. Essentially letting the young ones start over.

I agree with the poster above on Laura Derns character.

Rey is the main female lead.
I so want a silver ice fox or whatever their names are! They remind me so much of my catahoula.
I kept wanting Ben to completely go over to the good side. I guess at this point, that won't happen. I kept wanting to make Finn Lando's son or some relative. Something Mas said in the last movie about "if you are around long enough, you see the same eyes" or something along that quote. I have been wondering just what she saw in his eyes. The fear, the resolve or some family relation?
Leia using the force after the explosion was just a bit much for me. My DH even knew that one was just too much for me.
My DH's assumption is that Rey is really Luke's daughter from one of the Jedi chicks that left and that they didn't trade her for wine but sent her off to safety. I just hope that someone is still alive in the next one to tell us who she is or isn't.

I want to know how Rey got aboard the Millenium Falcon after the big ship was split into pieces. Kylo Ren was passed out on the floor but no sign of Rey. I know... just a minor thing. lol
While I hate that Luke passes, I thought it was a nice touch to have him sitting there, looking at the sunrise/sunset. Reminded me of the scene in the very first movie where a young Luke is looking at the sunset near his home, wondering what his future will be.
I could have done without the milking scene. Not needed in the story. I read that the director's cut is over 3 hours long so I guess we should be happy he edited what he did. lol
It was very neat to see Carrie's dog and daughter in the film. At the same time, I feel very melancholy knowing it is the last film she did. I adored her so much, still do.
I too loved those silver ice foxes.

I liked Laura Dern, I thought she looked wonderful and I had a hard time figuring out which side she was on. OP is right though about Poe not knowing about her.

of course Reyes parents aren't junkers. That was just a manipulation ploy of Kylo's part.
I like Finn and Rose as a team. Even as a couple. He and Rey are now like siblings to me.
You could tell that Luke wasn't really there because when his feet moved in the dirt, the dirt wasn't red like when Kylo's feet stirred up red diet when he moved.
Laura Dern did seem like she was in a coma.

There is no last Jedi because they live on in regular ordinary people. Like the ending where the little boy uses the force to make his broom come to him.

I knew Luke wasn't there. It wasn't possible. It showed that Kylo Ren is still not developed. He should have recognized that it was an apparition. He also can't control his emotions.
I am 100% positive that Kylo will become Ben again and help destroy the Empire in the final movie.
I really hope Rey is an ordinary girl. Luke was the last Jedi.

I agree that Rey should just be an ordinary person. It would be so stinking cliche if she is Kylo’s sister.
I think the whole story about Finn and Rose at the casino was too long, and pretty dumb, but I do think they needed to do something to introduce the kids and show that there are people from humble backgrounds that can use the force. I hope it was a way to kill the stupid medachlorian (I have no idea how to really spell that and since it is from the prequels it isn’t worth the bother of looking it up) nonsense from the prequels.
I love the Porgs, I don’t care that they are there simply for cuteness. They were adorable,
Overall, I liked it way better then Force Awakens and I actually really liked that one too.
I think JJ Abrams is coming back for the next one. I wonder how that will be, I wonder if it will feel cohesive? I This one felt so different then FA, I am not sure they will flow so well. Have they even started filming? I imagine they will have a big time jump.

Can we talk about Rose’s sister Paige? What a woman. And Rose really came into herself. Finn too. He finally had his moment where he chose to do something heroic instead of falling into it.

Rey isn't an ordinary girl, she was hidden on that planet
So who is rey?
Right now we know that she is as powerful as yoda. Maybe even more, and that she is the new hope.

The new hope - I felt like they kind of wasted the title of “a new hope” on the original Star Wars movie because it would be fitting for the next one.

I came away from the theater thinking I didn't like this one as much as others. I still don't, but I will see it again. I did not like most of the humor throughout, especially in the beginning. It seemed like forced one-liners rather than the unintentional humor in past movies. I did not like the space scene with Leia floating back to the ship. I'm torn about whether I want Rey to be the child of someone powerful who was hidden intentionally, or just some ordinary person. The whole idea of the Jedi as some elite powerful group is interesting. I like better the idea that ordinary people can learn to use a Force that's in everything. In this political climate today my mind went immediately to our resistance in this country and how so many ordinary people have stepped up to campaign for local candidates, to participate in protest marches, to write postcards...all the things so many of us haven't done before. Something I wondered -- how did the Jedi books get onto the Millennium Falcon? Remember when Finn (was it Finn?) was getting the blanket from the drawer we saw a glimpse of those books. Rey must have taken them out of the tree when Luke wasn't there because we know the whole tree was burned. Yoda said to let them burn. How is it that he didn't know they'd been taken? Unless of course the answer is that books don't have the power. On the other hand Rey was probably wondering how she was going to learn without something/someone to teach her. At the end I was expecting the cavalry to come over the hill, i.e., the rebels from the Outer Rim. But they said the distress message had been received but no one came. Why? Did the First Order take over the bases there and has allowed the Resistance to think the rebels are still there? Or have the Outer Rim people given up on the Resistance? Poe needs a few lessons in following orders. I didn't like him at all in this movie....too cocky. And his actions caused a lot of deaths. My thought was "typical cocky young man, doesn't like taking orders from a woman." I didn't realize that Laura Dern's character Holdo is from the novels that flesh out the Star Wars universe. My ds told me that. lol. So she has a whole backstory that isn't in this movie. I have never liked Mark Hamill, I think he's a bad actor. Yeah, heresy I know. I do not want Rey to be his daughter, I want her to be better than that. The birds were cute but I want one of those crystal foxes more. I'm going to google in a minute to see if anyone is selling them. I loved the scene where Kylo killed Snoke by turning the light saber. And I love the fight scene between Kylo and Rey. I would like him to be good in the end, but on the other hand the Resistance needs a powerful bad guy to fight against. If Kylo turns good who would that be? Unless he's bad throughout and turns good right at the end, like we saw the humanity of Darth Vader. -- Also, I want one of those red guys (from the fight scene) for Christmas! I wondered why they made a point of drawing our intention to the salt on the planet, but then I realized -- I think -- that it was so we would see there were no footprints under Luke's feet. I'm sure I'll think of something else to add here after I read the replies.

I was listening to a podcast that talked about this a little more - how her being an ordinary girl fits better with the sensibilities of this movie and the universe. It's an elitist thing to think that the only people who can be great are born into it and that doesn't seem to be consistent with the Resistance. I think that was underscored by the little boy at the end.

Well this household loved it!
My oldest is a huge fan - she read online that the "theme" of this movie was disappointment. Rey is disappointed in who her parents are, Snoak is disappointed in Kylo Ren, Luke is disappointed in himself - so there is also disappointment in the viewers as well.
I did like that the force appears to be for anybody - it isn't an elite thing. And that Rey comes from nobody, but is great with the force.
We loved the humour in it as well!

So, I am confused about what you guys are saying about Luke. Can someone explain the "secret" and him being there/not being there? My kids apparently missed it as well. I've only seen a few Star Wars movies, though, so am not an expert. I also missed the broom coming to the kid.
My kids said that there was a replacement for Carrie Fisher at the end. But I didn't notice that? Are they imagining that or did I miss it?

I hadn’t heard that about Carrie Fisher, all I had heard was that they were not changing the story or using cgi versions of her in the next film.

We saw it late last night and I was struggling with sleepiness. I missed some plot points and I'm definitely going to see it again.
I agree that the whole Finn-Rose plot was distracting and boring to watch, and I'm also not a fan of Laura Dern, in anything, she's so droll. And her wardrobe was super distracting to me. I kept thinking she looked like she walked off the set of Hunger Games.
I teared up at the Carrie Fisher floating scene. I was confused about what was going on with Luke but again, I was fighting drowsiness and didn't grasp it all. I couldn't figure out why they kept showing us the red sands, and I didn't even realize Luke wasn't leaving tracks.
I mostly loved it though. I was 11 when New Hope came out so I'm pretty sentimental about all the movies.

I will admit I was a Star Wars virgin. I've never seen a single one. But since I don't live under a rock I am familiar with most of the characters and some of the plots. Going in with fresh eyes, I really enjoyed this movie, much more than I ever thought I would. We got free tickets to the premiere and while we weren't interested in seeing the movie, we didn't want to pass up a fun evening out. ALL of us, DH and our 2 boys, loved it. I'm now on a mission to see them all. I've seen 2 others since Thursday and can't wait to see more to fill in all those gaps that I am missing.

I also felt like Snoke looked like a sup-ed up Voldemort. I really had hoped Kylo would turn good and I think he will turn and fight for the good side - but not sure who the villan will be if he is good? Hux?
