This is for my niece. My BIL is coming over for Christmas with his dd. Due to some dysfunction on his part and the girl's mother, we have not seen her in a couple of years. We are not close to BIL either. I know he said she needs sweaters and I got a size. Beyond that I don't have any information.
What toys and books are nine year old girls into? What clothing is popular? I'm going to text him later to see if I can get more info but he's not very forthcoming with information about anything. I know money is very tight, her mother isn't currently around and she's had a really rough life. Mental illness/drug/alcohol abuse with both parents, neglect, possible physical and sexual abuse etc. Anyway I have tried to send presents at times, but BIL keeps his distance. But he SAYS he will be there (at times he will say this and not show but he's doing well now compared to the past), so I'd like to get her a few nice things but need ideas. I just don't know enough about her current likes, needs etc.

I've spent a LOT of time in my son's orthodontist's office. She has a few of the Perplexus maze balls and every single kid that I've seen come through the waiting room picks one up & plays with it (including my kiddo).

We adopted a 9 year old girl for Christmas this year. She asked for Little Pet Shop toys and clothes/shoes.

I would go with something like Little Pet Shop or Shopkins.

Anything Littlest Pet Shop. LOL balls are really popular. Art supplies; a cool coloring book. Bath bombs. My 13 year old still likes stuffed animals. I got her this big ass teddybear with a Christmas hat (the thing is like, 4 feet) and I know she'll go crazy over it.
If you're looking for something bigger, girls over here are really into the fuji instax cameras. They come with tons of cute accessories and cool kinds of film.

mine may be atypical but Lego and science kits were popular with DD11 at 9 (and still now).

My 9 yr old DD likes anything with emojis on it, clothes/accessories from Justice, notebooks/pens, etc. She loves those onesie pajamas too. You can get them at Target. The books she likes are the graphic novels by Raina Telgemeier. She also likes Hatchimals (there are little ones that are the size of Shopkins), squishies (those spongy things kinda like stress balls), Beanie Boos.

My niece is into Shopkins, just starting to get into clothes, and loves art supplies.
On a more practical side, I would suggest a new school pack with supplies, and a thing or two to hang off of the backpack like those furry balls.

My daughter just turned ten and many of these apply to her too (minus the Hatchimals and Beanie Boos). Mermaid pillows seem to be popular this year (I got her one, along with a cute cat throw). On a more practical side, I would suggest a new school pack with supplies, and a thing or two to hang off of the backpack like those furry balls. My daughter collects keychains and loves hanging things off her backpack. Cute school supplies are always fun (and practical).

If she has a Kindle or iPad, I would get her iTunes or Amazon gift cards so she can choose books, music, games, etc. Depending on the kid, she may also like kits for making jewelry or hair accessories, nail polish, art supplies. If she doesn’t have a tablet, maybe a Kindle would be a good gift idea since the prices have come way down.
Other than maybe LEGO, My 7yo isn’t really into any of the toys that other people have posted. She doesn’t ever play with any of her dolls or those little plastic collectible toy things anymore at all. My kid is getting chapter books, a gem digging kit, LEGO sets, clothes and iTunes/Roblox gift cards. She literally had only two or three things on her Santa list.

My 9 year old is into: Lego's LOVES the Legos.. mainly the girl's legos, but will not hesitate on the boy ones too. Littlest Pet Shop.. (although I can see this might be coming to an end).. her and her friends love to 'role play' as they call it. She also LOVES anything to do with horses.. She likes to collect those Schelich (or however that is spelled) little horses and plays game online called Star Stable. She could live for just getting 'points' to buy stuff with.. of course that means I buy points and she just spends it all up. (I only buy points for special occasions and haven't decided if I am for Christmas yet) Robloxs (or something like that) seems to be popular as well.

My dd will be 9 in January. She loves LOL dolls and Littlest Pet Shops. She adores Baby Alive dolls.
Then, she also loves minecraft, beanie boos and anything art. She also likes diary of a wimpy kid and dork diaries books.
For clothes, I buy at Justice, children's place and the gap. She also loves stuff from Claire’s.

My 9 year old dd is into Shopkins, Slime, and anything squishy...as someone mentioned, she has a number of small emoji/squishy things she hangs off her backpack. Right now she is also into Star Wars (especially the Porgs!). She loves the soft fluffy throws and the pillows with the reversible sequins. For books, she enjoys Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dork Diaries. She is quite content with clothing from Target but we occasionally venture into Justice. Leggings and longer shirts.

My just turned 10 boys also loved the Amulet series.
My boys (I know not girls but some of the similar likes) are into Lego, Nintendo Switch games, big stuffed animals (still), bath bombs, they are getting the fuji instamax thing from grandparents, board games and table top games, super soft blankets, stuff from their respective sports (hockey and karate), journal/office supplies (they went crazy over my free crap from a conference I went to last week). One of them wanted a toy crane (like a mini version of the ones you see at a pizza place where you try to pick out the stuffed animals). Other things they have liked in the last year or so: Hearthsong has these cool forts (strong cardboard squares with velcro and look like rock), light up to the music speakers for their ipads, nerf guns (neighbor girls all have them too). They also like anything remote controlled and if I were inclined to indulge, swag from their favorite youtubers would be a dream come true for one of mine. lol
I am getting my seven year old niece an illustrated version of the Little House series, light up unicorn slippers and something else I can't remember LOL.

That was the age that my dd and her friends all started getting into colored pens - Flairs, Sharpies etc.... (I would avoid Sharpies if there are little ones in the house) You could add a journal or some fun post it notes.
Fun socks

My 9 year old DD hasn't looked at a Littlest Pet Shop in years (or her American Girl dolls for that matter). She loves any and all arts and crafts supplies and Legos. And like someone upthread mentioned, mermaid pillows (with all of the sequins) are a HUGE hit this year! Even my 14 year old DD is getting a mermaid pillow! lol

Thank you for all the suggestions. My dh is going to try and get more info on her likes/dislikes from his brother. If BIL will respond. If not, I'll do my best and go off of all of your suggestions and provide receipts to return/exchange.
