My husband and I are going to St Moritz in Switzerland to ski over the Christmas holiday. Christmas Eve our hotel is doing a Christmas Eve gala. I was going to wear a silver sequin pencil skirt, a white blouse (untucked) with a denim jacket and boots. It’s a super cute outfit and comfortable. I emailed the hotel to get some information, and the dress code for the gala is black suit and black bow tie for men. No mention of dress code for women, but the black suit and bow tie gave me pause. First, do y’all think they meant tux for men? And do you think my outfit will be too casual? I’m thinking yes, but damn. I don’t want to pack a cocktail dress and wear stupid heels.
Thoughts?

Yes, your outfit is too casual. You need either a long dress or a very dressy cocktail dress. I think the dress code for men probably means either tux or black suit. I saw a photo just the other day of an example of this exact dress code. The only evening dress code fancier than this is white tie. The women's dress code will go along with this. And Europe is dressier than anywhere in the US, and St Moritz is one of the fanciest places in Europe. So go buy yourself a gown, girlfriend, and be sure to share photos when you come back!
And, uh, St Moritz? You will probably be rubbing elbows with royalty there. You lucky duck!

'Black tie' and 'Gala' both indicate formal, so yes, I would say that's too casual. If it says Black Tie there's no need to specify what women should wear, it's a given. You need a dress, cocktail or long

Not too low cut, not too short, not too sexy and usually black!

Given the hotel’s description of dress code, I would go with dress mess/dining out attire.

Damn. Ya know when you ask a question, and you really know the answer but you want someone to say “Great idea, Kymberlee. That outfit sounds fab!” and you hear the exact opposite? Haha! Sigh...I have several other dresses but I don’t want to wear them ‘cuz they are sooooo boringly and I need to wear heels. I do not want to wear heels after skiing all day.
P.S. By skiing, I mean falling on my ass all afternoon. I can’t ski. At all. 😳😆

You are absolutly going to have to report back with what you wore, what the other ladies wore, the food, the whole shebang!

I won't even mind wearing heels for dinner. Why can't you put a silk blouse or crop angora on top of the sequin skirt and add heels? No need for a dress. SaveSave

I just went to the mall and hit the big department store...no joy on a fun dress. I guess I will wear what I have which will be fine, I suppose. A few weeks ago, I stumbled on a beautiful mink stole at a thrift store as well as some amazing Swarovski crystal jewelry. The mink isn't my style but it sure would have dressed up a simple black dress. I didn't buy either and both would have been perfect to dress up an LBD. I will certainly share pictures when we return. I am super excited.

littlemama , you have a very good point. kibblesandbits , no, I can't ski although I have all the equipment. We moved to Europe last year and it seemed like a good idea until I actually went skiing. Ugh, I can't believe my DH has talked me into skiing the freaking Alps. I do the apres part quite well, though. ETA: I had zero idea this place was so ritzy when we made the reservations. We are going to roll up in my little yellow car and the bellhop is going to think country has come to town. My dog will probably pee all over the fancy carpet as soon as we walk in the door.

We are going to roll up in my little yellow car and the bellhop is going to think country has come to town. One of the last Gala dinners I went to, my colleague drove there, about 400 Miles. The doorman opened the car doors for us and my colleague got out, saying to me “my ass is so sore after that journey.” “I'm sure it is, madam”. Said the doorman. Rofl! We were running late so I left my room in an absolute tip, clothes everywhere, towels on the floor etc. I’m not normally that bad. Got back to the room in the early hours of the morning to find it was pristine. Everything was picked up and hung up, fresh towels and toiletries, the bed turned down with a chocolate on the pillow. I’m willing to bet where you are going WILL be MORE up market than that!

But yeah, I agree too casual for the gala. And ditto, I want PICTURES! Wow, sounds amazing!

Around here "gala" or "ball" means long formal dress for women, whereas "black tie" means cocktail dress for women.
If it were me, I would call the hotel back and ask them to be very specific about the expected dress for women. They will probably tell you that a formal ball gown is expected, but just think how disappointed you'd be if you showed up in a ball gown and everyone else was wearing cocktail attire.
Have fun on your trip and post some pics!

St. Moritz is where the royals and the movie stars go to ski. Tux for hubby and very dressy for you, I should say.
Have fun. I hope you come home with some photos or stories to share with us.
I have only visited there in the summer. Very pretty Swiss village.

So, you don't want to wear heels?
Get to a department store before you leave and buy a nice long gown. All the way to floor, long enough to cover your very comfortable sneakers! I wore a pair of white leather Keds with rhinestones and pink sheer ribbon laces to my own wedding reception, long before it was the style to do so. No one saw until I lifted my dress for the silly garter thing.

St. Moritz is where the royals and the movie stars go to ski. Most of them now go to Klosters...far more discreet and the security is better there apparantly.

yes. too casual. a denim jacket? to a black suit/black tie affair? no. don't do it. if it's black for men, i'm assuming it's dressy for women too.

I haven't read the other responses but I'd say the denim jacket is a definite no. You probably need heels instead of boots and a wrap instead of the jacket.

Just google St. Moritz Gala and you will see what to wear. Then if you are like me, you'll order in room service and watch a movie instead. (Don't be like me.)

Just two words: Evening gown. St Morris’s is always glitzy, so imagine on Christmas Eve.
