I have some lights in an empty wine bottle that I leave out on the kitchen counter all year. I use it as a sort of night light in there. I guess that's similar to what people are describing with the terrariums and jars, etc. Growing up, my stepmom had some in a fake ficus all year. I like that idea, but I hate fake plants.

I love all of these ideas. I really thought I was the only one that loved having little sparkly lights all year round.
It started years and years ago when I'd decorate our fireplace mantel with seasonal decorations. I had strands of lights (mostly from Hobby Lobby) in seasonal shapes and colors. Hearts for Valentines, Easter Eggs, Shamrocks, etc. We had a beagle that was just mesmerized by those lights on the mantel. Every night I would plug them in and she would just sit there an stare at them for the longest time. LOL. We started calling the lights "Zoey's Party Lights". She was 14 when we lost her and I stopped putting up her lights.
I think it's time I started putting some lights out again. I took down the Christmas tree the day after Christmas and that corner and my mantel are so dark! I just dug around in my craft room and I discovered 3 strands of what I think you all are calling "fairy lights". And they have timers! I also have some of those "craft" glass blocks. I need to dress those up buy cutting out a vinyl picture, or I think have a spray can of "glass frosting" to give a block a frosted looked so it's not so bright.

Dd strung a regular set of Christmas lights around her bedroom by the celing. She used pushpins.

P.S.: You guys are BAD. This is an enabling thread and now I'll have to find some of these lights on Amazon soon.... I'd love to put them above my (dark) kitchen cabinets since they don't reach the ceiling. Do you think they'd look good alone, or with some greenery (or is that too dated) I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEE "low light"!! I have rope lighting on the top of my cabinets. You can’t tell it’s rope lighting, just the glow. My cabinets had a hole drilled into the top that I could put the plug down into above the microwave. I put one of those extension cords that you normally step on that I can just push on and off inside the cabinets above my microwave. This reminds me that I have some small lights under my cabinet. I got them from Ikea. I'll try to remember to take pictures tonight.
