My house is very warm toned. I have hardwood floors that are a warm, medium maple color. All my decor is in browns, greens, gold's, and some very dark red accents. I am very consistent throughout my house.
I want to redo my first floor bathroom. It is not a master bath. It is the bathroom guests use when they come over. My in laws were very generous with Lowe's gift cards for the holiday because they knew we had a few projects we wanted to get done before my DD graduation party in June.
We went looking last night and I am very torn on what to choose. I loved a white, bead board style vanity. It had a beautiful mirror the was very deep and opened for storage and the mirror had a brushed nickel edge on it. Then we looked at flooring. The flooring I loved was a ceramic tile that looked like wood but was shades of Gray, it was very rustic. My tub is off white. My toilet is white. When the shower curtain is closed, only about an inch or two of the tub shows. We are not replacing tub or toilet.
I just saw this combo and loved it, I imagined it with a nice almost teal blue, but light, color on the walls.
My hang up is, the whole thing looks very cool toned while the rest of my house is very warm. I also saw another vanity in a deep brown wood, a ceramic tile with wood look that would match my hardwoods, and a ceramic tile that was shades of brown which would go nicely with the top of the vanity. So I have other options. I think I am just thinking of that awesome bathroom I can't remember which pea shared recently and I thought was beautiful.
Opinions?

I'm thinking that you won't see your warm toned house while inside the cool toned bathroom. Go for it!

I wouldn’t care if my bathroom didn’t “match” the rest of my house. My kids rooms didn’t match the rest of our house. I say if you like it, go for it!!

It’s not hard to mix warm and cool tones. Grays and blues mix beautifully with yellows and reds. Go for it!

I would try to blend cooler tones into your bathroom while not making it stand out awkwardly from the rest of your home.

I don’t think it has to match, but you love it for a reason. It sounds like a beachy look. Maybe google beach looks and see if you can find a slightly warmer version. Or maybe this is the beginning of a housewide shift?

Let me also say, my decor has been very consistent now for about ten years. I feel like I am moving toward an update for the entire house within the next 3 years. I would like to replace my living room furniture next year.
Also I am going to repaint the kitchen before the graduation. I am really leaning toward a blue which I think is pretty neutral and does pair well with the green in my living room. I may repaint my dining room as I am unsure how I feel about the gold in there with the blue I want to do in the kitchen. But my dining room is a lot of windows so minimal wall color. I am also going to recover my dining room chairs as it is needed.
The bathroom I feel like might be the start of a whole new look for me. And really paint I can change quickly and easily. But the flooring and vanity will have to be something that I carefully consider as it's more permanent.
My DH was shocked by my picks. He has lived so long with me he thought he knew exactly what would be my choice. But it just all clicked in my head and I am having a hard time getting excited about the dark and brown tones.

You described your picks so beautifully, I'm ready to move in and relax. Just remember color is not absolute, there are warm and cool options for any choice. Do you have a paint fan? Sometimes that easier to select a color a few steps warmer, or cooler, than looking at the brochures and chips.
Also, don't hesitate to go to the paint store (not home improvement store) and ask the sales clerk to help you modify your choice to fit the overall scheme.
Have fun!

I know exactly what you’re saying. We need to redo our master bathroom and I love the whites for it; but they wouldn’t match. You could pick a warm blue or the blue you are going to paint the kitchen to tie the room in with your other rooms.

With this information, I would proceed with changing your bathroom to what you love now. You've had the other scheme for awhile now and you are allowed to evolve into new decor styles. I say embrace what you are loving! To help tie in your old decor with the new, how about finding subtle ways to incorporate one of the colors from before? Maybe add in some accessories that are in lighter tones of brown (tan) and green? It sounds like you are leaning to a beach feel, so some sea glass and tan would fit in pretty well! SaveSave

Lol, I wish I'd said what mom said. We've just finished one little update and about to start another. I've been updating small accessories and pieces to help other roooms keep up. The whole house looks refreshed.

Thank you guys for helping me sort through my thoughts. This is one area where I don't trust myself. I have gone on many a redecorating bipolar bender in my past. Take me into a store like Lowe's or home Depot and I can completely make over a room and then want to do my whole house. I have no self restraint when it comes to stuff like this. I have been really good about mastering my feelings by painting my bathroom beige and when I get an itch just doing new curtain, towels, and rugs. But now I am in a situation where my vanity in my bathroom and my floor are in really bad shape, so I need to make a decision.

And really, so many things need updating or a new coat of paint right now. I am in the perfect position to go in a new direction. And I've been able to reign it in for ten years and three different homes.

I wouldn't worry about the bathroom not matching the tone of the rest of the house, especially if that's the design direction you are attracted to. What I would encourage though is replacing your bathtub. Off white/ivory fixtures look dated to me and I think that the bathtub would stand out even more against white beadboard.

Since you are not replacing the tub with a walk-in shower, I suggest the vanity coordinate with both, but not match either, the tub or toilet. (If a white vanity perfectly matches the toilet, then the tub will look dingy; if an off-white vanity matches the tub, then the toilet will look too stark white.) Consider a pale warm grey wall color to tie with the rest of your home & use light teal accessories (that could easily be changed to red/green/gold for the holidays).
To quickly update your home, consider painting a super pale warm gray (eg Benjamin Moore Classic Gray - it's neutral with a grey, rather than yellow or pink, undertone) throughout. It's versatile & works equally well with cool & warm colors & various styles (eg farmhouse, modern, transitional), giving you more flexibility to distinguish/personalize each space, yet still look cohesive.
Have fun, & happy decorating in the new year!

anonrefugee, my ex-husband always said he never knew what he might come home to. He tolerated it. My current DH likes to have input on the decorating so I've worked really hard to resist my urges out of respect for his feelings.

It sounds like this bath is one place you can do something a bit different so I'd do it. You can always add something tan or gold as an accent.

I think sometimes we get stuck in a rut- I know I do- when it comes to decorating-doing what we are comfortable with and have always done. Go with what you love. I agree with mom- pull in some colors from other rooms as accents. It will look great!

My mom is an interior designer. I recently asked her a similar question. Our whole house is warm tones. I want to do the upstairs bathroom grey with black and maroon accents. She said that because it is its own room, doing a different cool tone wouldn't conflict with the rest of the house being warm tones. So, go for it!
We also have an issue with the tub showing. Our tub is lovely late 60's olive green. I don't want to replace it because it's in good condition. She suggested getting regular long window curtains 84" in length because then they'd cover from the top of the olive green seahorse tiles to the bottom of the olive green tub and no green would show at all. She said just to line with a regular plastic shower curtain at regular shower curtain height for containing water.

This whole dilemma sounds exactly like my house. I have all golds and warm tones. Fast forward to a visit at a friends house. She has a Caribbean Blue (not bright but muted) powder room. It was all a I talked about for months. I wanted to paint our new toy room (we changed over our living room into a toy room for the kids) this blue, but worried what it would do to the rest of the house. I wouldn’t do it. Came home one night and my husband had it done. It is my FAVORITE color....and I dislike the color blue, but now I think my house doesn’t flow. I already know what colors I want but my husband just shakes his head and walks away I would change the whole color scheme if that is what you think needs to be done. That is one of my first projects of the New Year. I’m taking on my house!!!! Good luck. I can’t wait to hear what colors you decide to paint (or keep) ETA..... the reason I CAN’T bring myself to change my house is that after my dad passed away I bought a big photo from Kirkland’s. It is golds and reds and oranges. They called it Poppy. My father was called Poppy. I am such a sentimental person..... and this photo brings me comfort every time I look at it!!
