I have been scrapping for years, love it but want to do more with card making since I go through several hundred per year.
I see the white paper thread. Guess I will try some other paper for bases soon. 😀. Have always used whatever comes with envelope/card sets.
Question - what greetings do you use most? Do you have a favorite punch or does die cut machine work better?
Still takes me about 8 cards to get one I like enough to mail. So I end up tossing and buying them more often than I want to admit. 😏

I use rubber stamp verses on the inside of my cards most of the time--StampinUp has some good ones. I also use Pinterest for ideas.

Thanks. I have been checking Pinterest. Think I need some verse stamps. Word stamps are not ones I have bought lately. 😀

You could look at pinterest for design you like and mimic them.
If you buy your cards and envelopes together, it’s fine to use those cards bases. I think a lot of prolific card makers buy the envelopes separately and then use their own supplies for bases.
When working with pattern paper I like a smaller design or 6x6 paper pads.
I tend to only do cards as I need them but birthdays are the most common card I send followed by sympathy.
I like stamp sentiments. I’ve bought sets with just multiple sentiments for birthday, sympathy, and Christmas.
I’m by no means a card making expert.

"Thinking of You" is a great generic sentiment to have on hand - it can go from holiday to sympathy! I use Thank You (or Thanks) and Happy Birthday the most. Anna Griffin has some beautiful sentiment sets. One of the first stamp sets I bought was a variety of sentiments - I highly recommend that (most manufacturers have at least one variety set). I use my die cutter a million times more often than my punches, except for a couple of small things like a tag (I have tag dies, too, but mass-producing is faster with a punch) and a couple of circles. For paper, I often use the Neenah Solar White 110 lb. for card bases - but I also use the packages of cards and envelopes from the big box stores, especially for non-standard sizes. I highly recommend the Martha Stewart (or other brand) scoring board for making envelopes out of old, single-sided patterned paper! Welcome to the world of card making!

Welcome to card making.
I mainly make birthday or thank you cards. My Favorite Things has a stamp set called All Occasion Sentiments. This is a fat cursive font that has lots of sentiments from the standard Thanks and Happy Birthday to Praying for You or Sending Hugs. I like big fat fonts, then you can keep the background simple. If your don't have a lot of stamps, then the 6x6 paper pads that Lisadv recommended work great for backgrounds. For the inside, I usually hand write a sentiment or include a gift card. I do have a Simon Says Stamp set that has birthday greetings for the insides of cards, but I don't use it that often. I just think it's more personal to hand write a sentiment.
I would suggest looking at some of the bloggers and find someone whose style you like and follow them. A few that I like are Nichole Sporh, Kristina Werner, Yana Smakula, Vicki P from Greece), Stephanie Klauk, Laura Bassen.

Maybe I'm not a good person to comment because I am not great at sentiments - I often leave them off entirely, or make cards with themes or sentiments that I struggle to actually use. But I've been trying!
If you have a die cutting machine already there are some nice options for die cutting bold sentiments for the front of your cards. But a good "thanks" (or "thank you") word die will take you a long way. Jennifer McGuire also recommended a "celebrate" one (I got mine from MFT) that can be used for lots of happy events. I got a "congrats" die recently (I prefer the full word congratulations, but to get a bold die cut that's easy to handle and fits on a card front, congrats seemed like a better option). I like the look of a bold die cut sentiment paired with a smaller stamped message (like "thanks" die cut and "for your kindness" stamped below, or "sending" written or stamped above and "love" die cut.)
I've been trying to train myself to only buy stamps and dies for sentiments that I really use. Birthday greetings, a couple of "thinking of you" options, "hello" (I send cards with letters inside without specific occasions in mind), and thanks primarily. I usually write a longer message inside the card, and my stamping skills are limited, so I don't get the longer sentiments that go inside cards, but it seems like a lot of people love those.
If you like her, Cathy Zielske has been sharing some fairly simple card designs on her blog this year as she's gotten into cardmaking. I love watching Jen McGuire videos but her channel can be a little overwhelming with so many products and techniques. I tend to buy more than I make when I watch her. But if I'm careful and watch a video related to products I already have she is very skilled and her videos are excellent. Justine Hovey also has a great YouTube channel and makes cards that are simple and achievable and don't require you to have a ridiculously well-stocked craft room.

Wow!😀. Thanks. I have marked a few blogs and videos. Thank you. Karen Werner has some great videos. Also going to pickup some different paper. The ones I use require two layers to make sturdy enough. I am good on the paper side, just stamping is not so easy. Learning though. I like buying, just need to figure out the using. Going through I have very few general sentiments. Nearly every animal that exists, not much for words. Looking up the fat script ones. Those sound useful. I tried looking at a few sites for general word ones, but haven’t found yet. Off to do more searching. ps. Paper card with printer I can do, I just really want to figure out how to actually use my stamps. below is a card I made for shower invites. Image is just black on white. I wasn’t sure how to dress it up other than vary the paper. I made card front and glued onto white cardstock base. Ordered some of the neehnah cardstock to try. I think I tried 3 black ink pads before I found one that would stamp well. Inside I printed on my white cardstock to make more sturdy.

I’m *Not* the OP, but THANK YOU!
I’m new to making cards and really struggling since I received some highly critical critiques from an artistic relative.
Lots of very helpful information in this thread and I thank the OP for starting it.
So -again - thanks!

Lots of very helpful information in this thread and I thank the OP for starting it. So -again - thanks! Are you serious? That's horrible. Even in my beginning card making days every person I gave a card to told me how great it was (even though it wasn't - by far). That relative would never get a card from me again, hand made or store bought!

Taken time for me to do, but you have to ignore/not listen. Person on my end always gets something I can “throw money at” to do. They have never received another thoughtful gift or anything with thought beyond click and done. Auto reminder that it is time to buy. One click and done. My my crafting skills aren’t perfect but have gotten better. I have other relatives who have a favorite paper craft project on display in a glass case! I think I have done nicer for them, but the thought behind it is why they kept.

I make hundreds of cards a year. I too use the Neenah Solar White 110 lb. for card bases. I have used it for years. I get a whole ream of it when it is on sale. Just bought a ream from Joann for 50% off with $4.99 shipping. I make exclusively A2 size which is half of an 8 1/2 X 11 sheet of paper folded in half which is 4 1/4 X 5 1/2. I have a TON of setiment stamps for the front of my cards. I almost never put a sentiment on the inside. Before I had a lot of stamps I printed phrases on my computer adn printed them out. I still do that sometimes. I also only use white bases. I might use colored carsdstock as my base pice but I always then adhere it to a white card front. I just find that my card supplies are easier to store and design if my parameters are consistant. I have HUNDREDS of cards pinned on my Pinterest www.pinterest.com/slicksister/. They are seperated by theme or stamp set. I use my punches/Big Shot, Cameo and rubber stamps a lot. All three are invaluable.

Maybe you can find an outlet to donate some of your creations that you feel are not mail worthy so someone else can get some enjoyment from them?

Winnie and Walter have some great big words dies with matching stamp sets.
I bought happy, merry, bright and thanks. The dies are called "in a word" there is many other words available. They were pretty reasonable and shipped quick. I was very impressed with them
