I always thought of arms as guns, but I suppose you could be armed with many different things. Baseball bat, broom, hammer, etc. I thought this was an interesting take on the subject.

I think the term "arms" implies guns, not knives or baseball bats. But "guns" could also include stun guns ... couldn't it?

We could say someone was armed with a knife, or armed with a bat, or even armed with a frying pan.... Therefore, these are all arms!

I think the term "arms" implies guns, not knives or baseball bats. But "guns" could also include stun guns ... couldn't it? Traditionally that is what I always thought too. Realistically there are all kinds of things that one could arm themselves with, like knives etc. If stun guns apply then why not knives and other things? This could get quite interesting.

As far as I know, it does not. I read a story about a man being pulled over in our town, and he had a stun gun in his car. He was arrested because apparently stun guns are illegal in our state. I also came across this because I wanted to buy a stun gun for myself, and apparently you can't buy one. I think it's ridiculous because I would much rather have to use a stun gun on a person than possibly kill someone with a real gun (I do not own a real gun or have any desire to, but I am a small female so it would be nice to have something to protect myself).

At the time the Bill of Rights was written, arms would have included muskets, swords, and archery equipment. Don't forget that the frontier was a dangerous place. People needed there guns not only to defend themselves against other people, but to provide food and fend off dangerous animals. But, as I understand it, the primary purpose of the Second Amendment was so that the people would be able to defend themselves against tyranny. The British were taxing the colonists up the yin-yang and then told them they couldn't have weapons because they feared a revolt. Didn't work.
So, I think a stun gun should be protected under the Second Amendment. Personally, I won't own weapons. They scare the crap out of me and I know that a lot of the guns used in crimes are stolen from people who got them for self-defense.

Hmmmmm......that's a very interesting point. I never thought of that. Mace and some pepper spray is illegal here and I want to carry some. I don't see why it shouldn't apply. It protects you and you can subdue animals with it too.

I just skimmed the linked article, but I agree with them- I think 'armed' by definition could mean any number of things besides a firearm-- Baseball bat, pitchfork (lol!), candlestick, etc. whatever is at hand if necessary.
