There was another discussed about themed paper. I said something, then coming back, saw a bunch of notifications and thought "Oh God. What did I say?" -- LOL!! -- but there was a lot of agreement as to many of us not wanting any theme in products -- well, certainly not themed paper. And I don't backtrack from that position.
But -- I think "theme" can, sometimes, be effective in embellishments - in LIMITED conditions! A sheet of stickers (puffy, paper, chipboard or whatever iteration) can be helpful sometimes.
So - is there a product or product type that you in which you think a theme is preferable ?

Birthday, Christmas, Halloween for paper.
Add fall, beach, and baby for other product.
I honestly feel like I can manage the rest without purchasing single purpose products.
ETA: don't get me wrong, themed stuff is fun, and I buy a bunch of it! I was talking need vs want, if there even is a scrapbooking "need." I love that Disney merch.

I agree with msliz . While I am a theme scrapper beyond all reason, I think Christmas, Halloween and Birthday at least in color choices. The non theme paper people - do you like to use theme colored paper or generally like to be non traditional? Sounds like some people might prefer the more subtle B side of paper?

Birthday and Christmas papers I use for cards as well as pages, and love the themed approach my favorite manufacturers have taken. I love the traditional styled lines, but also some of the different approaches/ colour schemes. And I am a sucker for fall lines. Make my dgk's play in the leaves just so I can play with the pretty papers when I scrap them! I have acquired a few too many beachy collections, but I love summer outdoor themes to scrap summer adventures with the dgk's. Could use some more amusement park themes without the traditional red/yellow/black Disney colours. I also love travel themed papers, but have over collected them, so a new collection would have to be REALLY special. Could use more LAKE, FARM, SCHOOL SPORTS themed lines. Also a HIGH SCHOOL or COLLEGE themed line. But I guess some cool stickers &/or diecuts would work to tie in with the photos I have. I think that the trick to marketing to so many different tastes is to keep the themes but really work at having B sides that work for anything. Or having a set of generic papers with a variety of sticker sets or stamps/dies to go with them would work. Lawn Fawn and Photo Play have certainly been successful producing sets of plaids in various seasonal colour collections. And I have always been a fan of the BoBunny "double dot" collections.

When I go to my LSS, the themed paper usually sells out the fastest. I think people love it.
I think people should just create what makes them happy. I do both kinds of layouts and like the variety. I probably use embellishment themes for travel and water the most.

What happens to me if I start going too far into themed product is then I feel like if I don't have a specific themed product for a page I get stuck. I generally prefer more general embellishments and multi purpose sentiment stamps to avoid that and so I don't end up with leftover product I won't use because it's too specific. The exception is Christmas

I love themed paper. I live in Florida so I will buy anything Disney/theme park related. Anything with alligators or flamingos...lol.Anything beach, cruise or trave. See I love themed paper...ahh I'm an addict.
I find myself buying tons of cutesy papers & embellishments but rarely using them. Sure doesn't stop me from buying them though!

Yes, I'm definitely a "B-side" scrapper. And I'll use whatever colors compliment the photos. I always start with the photos. I've never chosen my photos based on a paper.

Themed products are a staple in the industry.
I'm a simple, clean, story-focused, & theme-challenged scrapper, who primarily scraps our teen boy's activities. I prefer classic patterns & versatile embellishments in usable/masculine color combinations. Themed products are used sparingly on my pages. For example, the only basketball on a sports page may be pictured in the photo. The use of circles, grids, stripes, woodgrain, orange, a varsity font, &/or other elements subtly reinforce the theme.
Happy scrapping!

It's really strange, I don't consider myself to be a real themed scrapbooker, but sometimes I get ridiculously excited when I find an oddball themed "something" that goes with my photos. For example, I have some pretzel eating photos from a trip to Germany and was thrilled when I found an AC collection from a couple years ago with some pretzel stickers. I think I am with others when they say I prefer a theme in my embellishments rather than my paper. The exception to this is subtle, generic travel paper (map prints, compasses, etc.).

I personally don’t like themed paper, even for holidays and events. I just like random paper that looks good together and with the photo i’m using. For example, I have the Amy Tangerine pizza paper. I’ll just use it as a fun accent on a page about my son, not necessarily on a page about pizza.
I have used Xmas paper in the past when I was on a kit design team, but I had SUCH a hard time using it, because it wasn’t my style.

Apparently it's out of style, but I love themed paper. Any holiday, event, activity, I have scrapped it with matchy-matchy paper, stickers, embellishments. It's not something I use much any more, but I'm not ruling it out. Let's just call it old school.

I like both themed stuff and generic stuff, just depends on the situation. I scrap with a lot of themed stuff because most of my photos are event photos especially Christmas, Halloween, DD’s birthdays ALWAYS have a theme (princess, Elmo, My Little Pony, Plants vs. Zombies, Mickey—TWICE!!), vacation, school, July 4th, lake/beach, county fair, etc. I just don’t take all that many regular everyday non-event photos.

The best example I have is when I made a layout about a whale watching trip I took. All the papers and embellishments were generic and just went nicely with the colors in the photos. I was in the process of finishing up the journaling when I came across a 99 cent sheet of itty bitty shimmery whale stickers at a chain store. I got a huge kick out of buying and using something so incredibly specific simply because it was different. I put one whale sticker at the bottom of my journal box and to this day it brings a smile to my face to see it on that page. The remaining 99 whales on the sheet are in a drawer somewhere.

I find myself more drawn to solid or generic printed papers..plaid, ginghams, stripes, dots...then add embellishments to bring out a theme. I find my style changes all the time. I will do some things that are more "on trend" then turn around and do something "old school" like circa '90 Creative Memories borders up the side of a page..lol.

As with anything and everything, scrapbook style is "to each, their own". There is no right or wrong. What one likes, another may not.
I personally, love "theme" scrapbook products.
My scrapbooks are reflective of me, and what I like. Doesn't matter to me, what someone else likes. Doesn't matter to me, if someone doesn't like a particular style of product, in my scrapbook. It's my scrapbook, not theirs.

I only buy themed supplies that reflect a season. I don’t have a need for anything else.

I love the themed stuff. I mix it in with other supplies for sure, but use plenty of it so you "catch" the theme. I really like how it makes specific layouts very unique and customized--I like a lot of page variety in my books to help keep them different year to year.
I also find it especially fun to create with these themes as each page is so specific--I just have more "fun" creating pages with themed supplies. So if there is something like Harry Potter, specific sports, going to the fair, I love to buy and use that stuff. I also love how I can supplement from my stash with items I wouldn't be inspired by on my own or leftovers--it is a win-win to use the fun new stuff and some old stash. I also use theme-y stuff for Halloween (one of my faves), holidays, beach (esp. when sub-themed--like Palm Springs, retro, etc.), summer, birthdays. I tend to want to do these themed pages first--they are just fun and easy.
For instance, I will probably buy some of that new Alice in Wonderland stuff and make a Disney page with it--like a meeting characters page (wouldn't have to be Alice if she wasn't a feature, but I might include an Alice photo if I have one). It is like a great starting point for an idea for a characters page.

I think I do a good mix of both on my pages. I like to use seasonal themed items. Christmas for sure. I often use more neutral paper with themed accents mixed in. Just depends on the day and my mood really.

Just depends on the day and my mood really. I would say that is my style, too, although I lean towards themed papers and embellishments. I definitely will use a B side of a themed paper for anything.

I agree with you. I'm not a themey scrapper, but I do like to have themed embeliishments. My issue is that a lot of the themey embellishments have the wrong stuff on them, or are way too cheesey for my style.
I think the only thing I would scrap very specific themes is babies, Christmas, winter and maybe weddings.

I am definitely a B-side paper buyer. I'm the one who breaks her knees in a scrapbook store because I'm down on the floor flipping every shelf of paper up to see the other side.
I like themes too -- they definitely have their place -- but I'm guessing 90% of my very large paper stash was purchased for the back side.

I really like to look at themed paper. I don't buy it because I can't figure out where to put my pictures. They always put the best parts of the design where you would logically want to put your photo, or it's just too nice to cover up, like Galaxy 45. Also if you want to use a part of the themed paper as an embellishment it faces in the wrong direction to adorn the page. One could scan and reverse it, but that's just too cumbersome and just not right.

I LOVE themed paper! As someone else said, it's fun and easy to use. Scrapping Halloween, Christmas and Birthdays are just so fun to do and easy to use. I also love, love, love fall themed papers and colors. I rarely use paper that isn't themed. And, like someone else said, it feels customized to the pictures being used. I don't care for Valentine stuff, I just have no use for it, but other than that I'm all about themed!

Ha. I just remembered that I bought an entire tube of washi for a themed page double pager. I hate pink and loved this page though.

I do love themed embellishments. School, holidays, location -specific, etc.
But I like to buy them separately.
And I don't like an entire collection of random themes. Donuts + flamingos+ tacos + arrows + gold foil is not useable to me.
Generic paper + complimentary alphas + specific themed embellishments that I pick are useful to me.

I do like to scrap with themed products or paper. By theme, I mean things that are part of my life; sports, holidays, or brand names like Star Wars and Harry Potter. Mermaids and unicorns? Nope! I did however, love the owl thing a while back because that's a school mascot.
