What has always stood out to me is how the (white, obviously) onlookers appear to view the event as entertainment. They look like they are at a sporting event or something. It’s foul.

When you see the lynching photos does anything stand out to you? As busy mentioned it appeared to be viewed as entertainment, but also, the fact that there were young boys standing along side their fathers to watch the carnage. The idea of bringing a child to witness such a grotesque violation of human rights and dignity makes it all the more stomach turning.

I am shocked at the sheer numbers of people watching. I was under the (mistaken) assumption that lynchings were more underground, less socially-acceptable. Olan I appreciate you taking the time to post. You are creating awareness and you have taught me a lot.

Disgusting. And with the climate as it is today, where Naziism and racism is trying to once again rear its vile head under the guise of anti-political-correctness, these things need to be shown, over and over, so that no one is ever allowed to forget why things had to change and why the good old days weren't good at all.

I thought lynchings were done in secret by men in white capes. I had no idea this was a community event. I think of the black residents in those towns and wonder how they could hold up in such oppressive, demeaning and dangerous societies. I can't imagine living with that kind of fear.

Olan I appreciate you taking the time to post. You are creating awareness and you have taught me a lot. I was under the same impression. In one image they said they would estimate the crowd at 15,000. I was really tempted to look up the population total but decided against it. They all looked like they were coming from church. The 60 min special was more in-depth than the article and did say that many of the lynchings weren't recorded but that still doesn't speak to how large a crowd it drew. I think we will look back and see that today's police shootings had the same function as lynchings did.

I have to admit I am confused by the title. One down refers to the man who died in prison? A million more need to die? I am off for the evening but yeah I am perplexed.

One Down..a million more to go was in reference to Edgar R Killen. However the lynching photos does illustrate just how many more racist people would have to drop dead in order for racial harmony to ensue. Each person in those photos may have had just 1 child.

I don't believe in hell but for this man's sake, I hope there is one for him.
