We are in the process of buying a new car. Long story but our previous car is 3 years old and has been in the shop 23 times. We are getting a great trade in because of that. Here is the issue- the brand new 2018 car we are buying has a small blemish on the dashboard and its all I can see. It is a small hole in the rubber trim of the dash. Would this be a deal breaker for you? Would you pass on a car you otherwise love or make them fix it before buying it it or would it not bother you?
It is a 2018 brand new $42,000 vehicle and has just 11 miles on the odometer. I feel that it should be perfect with no flaws, husband thinks I am a little OCD.

It will bug you forever. Make them fix it or pick a different car.

for $42,000 I'd expect no blemish... I'd wonder what blemishes are under the hood that is going to have it in the shop 23 times in 2-3 years.

No. I would worry that a small hole like that could grow over time as heat and cold expand and contract the dash area.

I would feel the exact same way. When I spend that kind of money on something, I won't settle for anything that I don't love and isn't perfect. And my DH would probably agree with yours... he likes to say I am "particular".

For a new car, I’d want no blemishes. As Basket1lady said, that could get worse over time.

I’ve never bought a new car, so I would want it to be perfect with no blemishes off the lot.

A new car...absolutely unblemished unless I am getting a beyond great price reduction for the blemish/issue. Otherwise why buy new.

You are not being picky, the car SHOULD be perfect. It needs to be fixed, or you need a different car.

Nope. Needs to be perfect. They do have systems that can repair dashboards though so maybe they can do that.

My Ex would agree with you. New car= no damages. And at $42000 I agree with you in theory. But I could live with a ‘tiny’ blemish ( if it’s truly tiny ) for some money off the car. I’d go back and negotiate some more $ off my car and it would then forever be my $1000 hole or whatever you negotiate.
But yea for $42000 it ought to be perfect

Nope, not crazy! There's no way I'd buy a new car in that price range with a blemish that will forever haunt you. You can't unsee it now and will just grow to hate it. I'm in the fix it or find another car group.
The only way I'd settle for it is if I was getting a substantial discount on the car and I could have it repaired myself for very little money.

It honestly depends on how big the hole is...I tend to not notice things like this so it probably wouldn't bother me.

If I had a car that was in the shop 23 times in 3 years, I'd be fine with a tiny blemish like the OP described. It wouldn't bother me one little bit.

You will be looking at the dash every single time you get behind the wheel. I wouldn't let them repair it either. I would make them find me another car exactly like what I want.

I would be happy to have a brand new 2018 car, and a small blemish would not bother me. In FACT. I would use it to get the car cheaper..ie, see that blemish, that's gonna grow with heat and cold. I would like a discount due to that, etc. but otherwise, yea, something like that would never bother me.

I think you should have them fix it. Its not like they are giving you a special price because its damaged. And you will be looking at it for a very long time. It doesn't cost them anything to fix it. You aren't being OCD or crazy.

For that price, you should be 100% happy with it. I say get a different one or have them fix it.
Congrats on your new car!

When I got my new car, it wasn't a blemish that bothered me, but the fake wood dash paneling. I had them change it out for the silver dash kit to cover it up. That was make or break for me. I'm sure they put it in the cost of the car somewhere under some type of fee but it looks a lot better to me.

There are millions to choose from. True...but a blemish that small just wouldn't bother me that much. If it was a great trade and a relief from 23 trips to the shop, and I loved the car a lot, that little thing just wouldn't bother me. But, cars aren't really my "thing" so I probably wouldn't have even noticed it to begin with.

Am I the only one who wants to know what type of car was in the shop 23 times in 3 years?? The f'ing piece of shit chevy traverse I bought for 52 grand. The car had its own drawer of paper work at the chevy dealership. The funny thing: if you looked in the garage employee parking lot, there was not one chevy in the bunch.

I do not understand why men don't want to complain. It is a perfectly reasonable complaint.

That would be a dealbreaker for me.
If i'm going to buy a brand spanking new price I'm going to have the right to cuss my face off because I scratched the glove box moving a backpack by my feet on the way home and then crying for hours because the next day the puppy barfed down my back while driving and while air conditioned seats sounded like a great idea, plucking little tiny pellets of frozen dog vomit from the ventilation holes sucks really, really bad.
Personal trauma aside, It takes nothing for them to fix it and it has potential to turn into much more for you. Have them do their jobs.

Absolutely not, I don't get why your husband thinks you should settle for a defect in a brand new car if you're not getting a price break on it that you're satisfied with. I assume it's going to be "your" car, not the one he's driving daily. If they can't fix it, I wouldn't buy that one. They can get another one, or I'd go to another dealership.
