Which also happens to be our dining room. My desk and an IKEA table/cart thing switched places.... I probably spent two hours moving things, and getting some things out of the space that can go in a closet (gift bags, and fabric). While I don't have any scrap stuff to purge I do have two containers full of random "stuff."
It's the "stuff" that makes my room feel cluttered and drives me crazy. Stuff = kid art work, report cards, birthday cards, articles from magazines, postcards (bought to keep not to mail), school papers, pages from books, letters... Every time I clean my room, I look through it all, can't figure out what to do with it, and it ends up back in a bin. Yes, I could scrap all of it... but do I want to? I also don't necessarily want to get rid of all of it...
Anyone have this problem? Any ideas? I am seriously considering putting it in a rubbermaid bin and sticking it in the attic because it's been sitting under my desk for probably a year and a half and I haven't made a dent...
Anyone else?

My suggestions are to put any savable, scrapable items in page protectors in your albums unscrapped. You can always go back and scrap them if you want. I do that with memorabilia lots, especially greeting cards and art work. I've also taken photos of the art work, and then made a scrapbook page with several photos on it. Tossed the originals. Postcards can be put in a pocket page. I had some boxes in the storage area for each kid and school papers to save goes in there, if I remember. Also, I suggest plastic boxes as we had some flooding once and it was all ruined. Not sure on the magazine articles though. Good luck.

I had/have the same thoughts as you and basically the same problem. I finally got tired of dealing with it and scanned as much as I could to a file on my computer. It’s there if I want it to scrap with, and I probably wouldn’t have used the original anyway.
I put the stuff in a bin and stashed in the storage area in the top of the garage.

I put the boys paper keepsakes in page protectors if it fit, otherwise it went into their own specific bin. Three kids = a ton of paper clutter.

You could scan it if you don't want to keep it.
Edit: If you do keep it, make a goal to scrapbook a few things each month so you can make a dent.

Dh and I were just talking about our attic. Go ahead and put it up there. You'll never think about it or see it again. We have no idea what's in our attic and it's pretty full. Whoever has to deal with our stuff when we're gone will have some thoughts about it, I'm sure!

breetheflea , I have seen people post about taking pictures of the artwork and making a photo book of it, and then tossing the artwork. That is what I would do. Except I would probably keep the current school year work until it was over. Wish I had a book of my school years artwork. I think it would be neat to go through it now.,

Yes, I know the feeling...
I have a couple of boxes. One holds correspondence - cards that I want to keep, letters, papers that people send me. I also have some letters I sent to my nana that were given back to me after she died. I go through it every few years and see how I feel about what I've kept. You never know who you're going to have a falling out with or lose touch with or who will pass away. I don't like clutter but I'm happy to keep a photo box full of letters.
I am good with having another box of papers that are just meaningful to me in some way, even if it's just articles I ripped out of a magazine or things I printed out, etc. Again, every few years I rifle through and see if they're still meaningful to me. I held onto some articles for many many years. I also have an old fashioned scrapbook for other articles that I clipped when I lived in Japan. It's newsprint type pages, bigger than a magazine, and stuff is pasted in or clipped in with staples.
I hardly ever look at any of this stuff. It lives out of the way in the top of my closet where it doesn't bother me because there's nothing I need to do with it to justify its place in my life. If it was in my daily living space it would drive me nuts and I would feel like I had to do something with it (but then I would churn it and nothing would get done and I would begin the cycle again). My personal preference it to limit the space that those things can take up. Once the box is full I need to go through and weed a bit, but otherwise I just keep it out of the way.
BTW I have a letter box that I keep on my bookshelf that I put cards and letters in soon after they come, and then I empty that into the bigger box when the small box is full.

I have a 2 gallon zip bag for each of my three kids' school years from k-6, so 21 bags. I keep them in 3 glass door cubes that I picked up from Michael's.
I took photos of whatever didn't fit, but I never went back and put the prints in the appropriate bags. My digi files are the bigger mess.

All of my kids' save worthy stuff goes in a basket. Once the basket is full, I go through it and sort it by child, then by date. I have Pizza boxes (yep, literally pizza boxes from a local pizza place) that I fold inside out (so all the printing is on the inside and the outside is blank). I have a stack for each child and depending upon how much "stuff" is in them, 1-2 years at a time will fit in each box. As I scrap, I go to the box that corresponds to the year I'm working on. I am a strange scrapper, I do things in order (not working backwards), and each child's book goes from Birthday to the day before their next Birthday. All of them were summer babies so that means each book also includes just one school year... ex. year 9 for DD is also 4th grade.
Anything that doesn't make it to the book gets put in a tote with the kid's name on it for them to deal with when they grow up! LOL

In terms of awards, report cards, school pictures, etc...I add it to my project life albums. I did, however, recently purchase 3 of the pencil covered 9x12 Studio Calico/7 Paper albums (because I can use letter page protectors in it, too) for these things as well. Since I have three kids, when they are all in school, I can't fit every award and every report card into my PL albums, plus I may want to look for things for specific children and looking in THEIR album instead of hoping to remember the right year/section/month in that album will likely be a lot easier.
For projects and things that I would love to remember but don't necessarily want to keep 100% of because 3 kids x 14 years of school is just not feasible to store, I have bins for each kit for school stuff to eventually go through and photograph highlights of. The plan is to make photo books (I won't photograph EVERYTHING, but the things that show progress throughout the year the best) and to only keep a small portion of school items that hold the most sentimental value to me. I haven't started, yet, because it seems daunting but it's only going to get worse if I don't start soon. I think it's one of those things that I need to have my husband there to sift through the piles with me and to help set up shop to photograph and decide what to keep (I know I'll want to photograph and keep way more than necessary). In bins, all it does it get manhandled, torn up and knocked over and put out of order. No one looks at it this way...so while I won't have the tangible items anymore, looking through the books to see how they've grown throughout each school year means more reminiscing and more space in my house all at the same time!

Each kid has a 12 x 12 x 3 box. Everything fits in it. My kids have kept the stuff that was important to them in their rooms, and it isn't much. I have a little artwork, some writing pieces, report cards and a few mementos. I don't need or want more than that.
