Hello all. I recently bought the TH crazy dogs and I really want to be able to color them in. Here's what I have at my disposal: - 6 copics - wrong colors - wintery whites/blues
- 4 distress markers - primary colors
- box of pentel markers - not the brush ones, the standard ones - have had forever
- 10 distress ink colors
- 24 color sakura koi watercolors
I'm ok w/watercolor. But I would like to try markers so options 4 & 5 are not what I'm after. What I would like are the more saturated colors w/a good blend. The only think I have above w/enough colors for blending (other than the watercolors) are the Pentel pens and they don't blend at all (or I'm not good at it). I can see every line - the nib is hard and thin so it's hard to get a softer line.
I would like to invest in a set of colored SOMETHING. 40ish colors? 30ish dollars?
What do you recommend? Should I invest in less expensive water-color markers (some names I've looked into: Ohuhu, Prismacolor, Arteza, Zig)? Or alcohols? I don't think I'd like to invest in copics - but are there others that have decent blend at a lower price point?
Thank you SO much for your insights.

I'm no coloring expert. In fact I'm not very good at it. But I finally went to the dark side and bought Copics (got a heck of deal on a slightly used set on Ebay). I like coloring with them. Before Copics I used :
Tombow brush markers. They do blend, but if you use too much ink the paper pills. The color of the cap is not necessarily the color of the ink and that drives me crazy.
I've colored with my Zigs RealBrush markers without using water.
I bought a set of PrismaColor Double Ended Brush Tip Markers for cheap on Ebay. I really like how smooth they are. But when I went to buy more they were almost as expensive as Copics and not re-fillable.
PrismaColor pencils. Leave lines unless you Gamsol.
Maybe one of the resident artists will chime in with better options.

You can see reviews for most of the off-brand alcohol markers on YT. There's also the Spectrum Noirs, which end up being about $1/marker on sale. They aren't bad and blend ok, although the nibs vary a great deal in quality from one marker to another.
And, just a thought, you can get new Copic Ciaos for about $3/marker on Amazon/ebay, although I haven't looked for singles. They range from the new smaller sets where you can get 6 Ciaos for $21 up to the 72 sets for $198. The 6-marker flesh tone set might work on your animals, depending on what you're going for.

I'm not an expert either, but I love my copics. I bought a few at a time in sets of 3 that were suitable for blending. I went with the colours recommended by Papertrey Ink because I have a lot of PTI cardstock for cardmaking.

Lindsay from Frugal Crafter reviewed these Studio 71 markers lately. She also did the Ohuhu - but they don't have a brush tip and I would really like a brush tip. Also found this video below on Studio 71.
Decided to give them a go at just over $1/marker. Will report back.

Got the Studio 71's yesterday. Played today. Will try to take a picture tomorrow. I'm crap at blending, but they seem to do a decent job for the price. I'm really happy w/them. I got the 24 set for about $25. If I really like it, I think I will invest in more colors over time w/copics. For now, I would give them a thumbs up for other newbies lie me.
