Neil Diamond is having to give up the rest of his tour and go into retirement. I'm so sad for him. I've loved him and his music for literally decades. I'm grateful I got to see him once in concert some years ago.

I've seen him in concert 4 times and really enjoy a lot of his music.
The diagnosis is a bit sad, but they have good medications and once they find the right one for him he's still going to be able to lead a relatively normal life (he doesn't have a terminal illness)...however let's be realistic the man is 77yo! He's done pretty well to tour this long and it's just natural that it was going to have to stop at some point.
Plus if he'd stop running off with women he meets on tour then he wouldn't have had one of the biggest divorce settlements ever ($150M). Time to stay home and enjoy the rest of his life and his last $150 million dollars.

I've seen him in concert many many times, and always had a great time. He was the opening act when our local concert facility first opened in my area. His greatest hits was one of the first albums I bought for myself when I was just starting out in my teaching career and bought a new stereo for my apartment. Lots of memories wrapped up in his music.

Oh that makes me so sad he's so talented!
When I was single myself and 2 GF went to his concert we had nose bleed seats. A roadie for him came up to us and traded our tickets for tickets in the front row it was epic!!
He had the nicest butt I swear you could bounce a quarter off his butt cheeks lol!

I’m so sorry to hear this. He’s my favourite singer/songwriter/entertainer. I’ve seen him in concert multiple times, and always thoroughly enjoyed his shows. Glad to hear he’ll still be writing and recording new music, though, and I’m sure not touring will be good for his overall health, so I’m glad for that, too.

He was due to perform here, where I live in a few weeks. I saw him 2 years ago and the only reason I did not have tickets for this one was disorganisation. He was going to perform in our beautiful Botanic Gardens. My Dad had Parkinsons- such a debilitating disease. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg) Corinne

So sorry to hear this. He was my late mother-in-law's favorite singer for many years. She saw him every time he came to her area. In fact, we all went to see him once. Sorry he has to stop touring. He seemed like he enjoyed doing it for the live crowds.

Oh that is horrible news. I always loved him, and my mom is a true fan. My parents have been to at least 7 or more of his concerts. She will be heartbroken. I can’t imagine how he feels about stopping something he loves. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg)

I have tickets to see him in March!!! So sorry to hear about his diagnosis but a little disappointed that I won't get to see him perform. Neil and I have a special bond - our birthdays are both on January 24th (different years of course!)

My DH and his family introduced me to Neil Diamond's music 40 years ago. It's sad - thankful I got to see him perform in person.
I agree with above - much better medicine then there was 40 years ago, when my Grandfather died from Parkinsons.

It's not THAT sad, he has a manageable disease and has only just been diagnosed, he's still very much alive and playing music...he's just giving up tramping all over the world and jumping around on stage, and at 77yo that's not really all that surprising.

I think it's sad regardless. Parkinson's is a terrible disease. It affects literally everything from muscles to cognition to emotional stability to sleep to speech to body functions you wouldn't think of (going to the bathroom, swallowing, etc). It's sad that he has Parkinson's disease. Often an official diagnosis comes many years after symptoms begin.

I was SO sad when I heard this news. Having lived through watching a loved one suffer with ALS, my heart goes out to Neil and his family in the battle they are all about to face. These diseases are just so awful.

It affects literally everything from muscles to cognition to emotional stability to sleep to speech to body functions you wouldn't think of (going to the bathroom, swallowing, etc). I know all about Parkinson's disease...I'm a nurse and with the correct medication regime many people live with it almost symptom free. A friend of my mother's has had it for over 10 years and you'd never know unless she told you. Yes some people get it really badly and it's difficult to control symptoms, like Michael J Fox...but most people aren't that badly affected. The press release said he's just been diagnosed and he fully expects to keep writing and playing music and pursuing other musical interests, he's just decided not to "travel and perform on a large scale basis" Many of the medications need to be taken at regular times and going to different time zones etc would make that tricky. However he does not have one foot in the grave and his life isn't over, let's not bury him just yet.

We will just have to disagree on that - I don't think that's a true statement at all. I've been involved with my father's disease, including working with him at our hospitals "Parkinson's Boot Camp" for newly diagnosed patients. My Dad doesn't have one foot in a grave. But the effect his night terrors have on him is sad. The fact that his grandkids always think "Papa is mad" because his facial muscles don't work like they used to and his face masks the emotions of the once gregarious man is sad. That it takes him an hour to get fully dressed and ready for his day when it used to take 5 minutes is sad, or that he might struggle for 10 minutes to get off his shoes. And, for the record, you would not know my Dad has Parkinson's unless he told you. You might detect it in his gait or slightly curled right hand, but he has no tremors. I'm still sad for him because it limits him a lot. And I'm sad for Neil Diamond, too. It's a hard diagnosis to deal with. ETA: screwed up the quote feature. I think it's incorrect to say most people are not badly affected.

The complications cause death, but Parkinson's is the root illness. My husband has Parkinson's.

i think he had a good entertainment run. time for him to relax and attend to his PD. there are many great medications now but you still have to manage it.
