Not banned here in the mountains of VA. I always ask for paper at Kroger’s but at icky walamart I take a few with me since they don’t offer paper.

I assume your system is similar to Toronto's Dalai Mama I looked at their website and it's so nice that you can put your compostable in plastic and it mechanically separates it. It would make a huge difference in our ability to add more stinky items to the compost bins. We tried the biodegradable bags, but they wouldn't hold things like meat scraps for the two weeks. Very similar to Toronto's - you could almost call it indistinguishable. (That's where I live.)

There's another pea here who lives quite near me (like a few kilometres) and I swear that, every time she describes the city she lives in, I find myself quoting her and saying that it sounds exactly like where I live before remembering that there's a good reason for that. ETA* GAH - you've quoted my typo!

Our town banned plastic bags about 6 mos. ago. It caused a lot of drama. The poor cashiers were getting yelled at. Some still are. We do have the option of buying a paper bag for 5 cents. We’re still allowed plastic for meat/produce/bulk foods.
I used my fabric stash to make dozens of totes. I like them because I can toss them in the wash anytime.
I got used to the grocery store easily. But I still forget at other stores like the hardware store, department stores etc.
The hardest part has been having enough bags for picking up dog poop. We buy biodegradable bags. But I don’t know how effective those are because our landfill eventually wraps up the huge mounds with super heavy duty plastic. So the stuff doesn’t really break down naturally.
