I have recently unpacked all of my scrapping/ card making materials after several years. I am looking forward to getting back to my crafting roots. I have an original Cameo that I never took out of the box. Is it so out of date now that it wouldn't be worth the learning curve to use? I'm not really interested in cutting vinyl at this time but I would like to possibly use it to scrap or make cards. Thanks for any input you can give!

I have one from 2012 that I use and love. Not sure how old yours is, but I'd at least try to set it up. The images are easy to buy and the software wasn't hard to learn. Watch a few YouTube videos of that machine and take a stab at it.

why not? are you thinking because they've come out with 'new, improved, and/or upgraded' versions of it? If it will still do what you want it to, then sure! I have the 12-inch one, but I only learned how to do the most basic stuff on it, and it works just fine for what I want to get out of it. And yes, YouTube videos are helpful!!

It is absolutely NOT outdated at all and YES you should take it out of the box and play with it. I had the original Cameo for years and it was a workhorse in my craft room. I used it for cards, scrapbook layouts, cutting vinyl for home decor, heat transfer for cloths, you name it! The newest Cameo does have some updated bells and whistles, but in my opinion, they're not necessities. The only reason I upgraded to the latest version is because I was able to sell my original at a decent price, but at the end of the day, if I still had the original, I would be 100% happy with it. If you're really on the fence about whether or not you will use it, download the software and give it a try. You don't even have to take the machine out of the box. I do find that the latest version of the software is a little more difficult to use, only because I think things are buried and hard to find, but that could very well be me because I was so used to the earlier versions. At the end of the day, the original Cameo is a wonderful machine to use for making cards or scrapbook layouts, or a whole lot more if that's what you decide!

My original is still going strong. It continues to work with every new software upgrade. It's really nice for layered lettering for titles. Maybe you could start there.

Thanks for the replies! It's out of the box, I downloaded the software and we are now staring at each other. I'm drinking a Sam Adams and offered to share but she didn't respond. Hopefully she will warm up a bit after she realizes how nice I am. I am going to spend the evening on YouTube learning how to woo her. Maybe by tomorrow we can get a bit more intimate. I think she's a bit peeved I locked her in the cellar for 4 years!

Join some Facebook Silhouette beginner groups - you will get instant help, but most tend to work towards vinyl and heat transfer vinyl. Most buy the machine and open up their new side hustle 10 minutes after they unbox it (insert rolly eyes here)

I always feel a bit uncomfortable doing this... however, check out my YouTube channel for Silhouette Studio. I do quite a few cards, and talk through the process in detail. And it's the up to date software which helps because you're not put off trying to find the tools. I've got a Silhouette Cameo 2 and it works fine. The only reason I want to change to a Cameo 3 is the ability to have two holders - one for a blade and one for a sketch pen. Also, the Autoblade function that will change blade depth without me having to physically handle the blade. Changing blade depth is awkward for me so I tend not to do it but I'd like the ability to cut paper and card, not just card which is what I do at the moment.

I'm really glad you took it out of the box! I started with the original, then the Portrait and now the 3. There is so much it can do. I haven't taken the time to learn much, but maybe soon I will!
