My son needs to gain weight. I don't know if he'll do good with the pediasure type drinks that are more milky if you know what I mean. I don't think he'll do well with the vanilla or chocolate flavored types. Any recommendations for something fruity.

I would just increase his intake of healthy fats or make a smoothie with healthy fats, protein and a little fruit. I wouldn't use something with a lot of artificial ingredients.

My 7yo is super, unbelievably, picky and he now drinks the carnation instant breakfast high protein double vanilla shakes (premade not powder). We tried several different brands and these are his favorites. The only other one he liked (just not as much) was the pediasure gain and grow strawberry shakes but comparing nutrients and price carnation was equal or better in things like calories and protein and lower in price. The nutritionist gave us some to try including a juice (vs dairy) one and he didn’t like that one at all.

Our doctor told DS he could drink a milkshake a day
DS now uses protein powder or the strawberry carnation instant breakfast powder

My DH was like your son growing up and he always had Carnation Instant Breakfast too.

Another vote for Carnation Instant Milk. Add a scoop of ice cream and a spoonful of peanut butter. And milk.

I'm okay with something that has a lot of artificial ingredients if it will help him gain weight. He has Autism and whatever I can actually get him to ingest and keep down is a victory. His favorite foods are crunchy. Do you have a detailed recipe on that smoothie because if he likes it, I need to duplicate it every time. Preferably something where you just taste the fruit. He at least takes fruits blended better in a drink. (sensory issues) ETA: Thanks for the suggestions from the other peas too. I waste so much money figuring out what he will tolerate.

Does he like chewing on ice? I wonder if homemade smoothies that still have some of the crunch from the ice (if that makes sense at all) would appeal to him. If you blended the fruits and any yogurt or protein powders first, could you only partially grind the ice to keep it at a texture he might like?

He likes to plunge his hand in liquid.

I had a friend who would make fruit smoothies for her son and throw in a shot of olive oil.

I make fruit smoothies which are really good and the kids love them. You can I add avocado without changing the taste. I use - frozen blueberries (about 1/2 cup) I freeze them when fresh when I can A banana (I keep some in the freezer, peeled in case I don’t have fresh) Frozen strawberries (same as blueberries) An apple An orange A plum if sweet I’ve added avocado before (half of one) You can also add full fat yogurt (I’ve done this for popsicles) If it’s not sweet enough, I add a bit (1/4 cup) of 100% blueberry juice) I use this same recipe for smoothies and frozen popsicles. If it’s just for one person, you should half the recipe. Or freeze popsicles with leftover. Good luck!!

We are making yogurt tonight, and hopefully he'll like it mixing in different fruits and freezing. He does like frozen gogurt. He has very specific tastes about the kind of type though.

I know you said fruity, but have you tried Fairlife Chocolate milk? Read about how it's made- no crap stuff in it. It's great just to drink or add to smoothies.

He has a very mild milk allergy and has never been great at drinking it (before we knew). I could try adding it to a smoothie.

I use about 1/2 c fruit (whichever fruit he likes), avocado (anywhere from 1/4-1/2 avocado), milk or milk substitute, a little ice, protein powder. The kids like 1/4-1/2 banana as well. I put in a veggie like frozen okra (blend well with the liquid before putting anything else in), spinach or a green powder. The okra is less likely to change the color. But you could leave the veggie out at first. Really, you can adjust the recipe to fit what you like.

DH has difficulty maintaining his weight right now. He'll drink a milk shake with an Instant Breakfast packet in it.
