Tuesday is a double big birthday celebration at dh’s work and his BOSS emailed me a request for an impressive cake. A few months ago dh asked me to make a cake and apparently everyone was most impressed so now I have a “reputation”. hit me with your most impressive cakes! I’m not afraid of anything

There's one of Martha Stewart's I want to make but haven't yet. Mostly because it has rum in the filling, and my crowd are teetotalers. But it looks very impressive. And time intensive. I'll see if I can find a link. ETA: This is it Eggnog Semifreddo Genoise Cake with Meringue Frosting link It's more of a Christmas cake I guess because of the eggnog. But I want to try it so bad.

Milky-way cake: I use a recipe similar to the one here from the Pioneer Woman. Decadent, not too hard, and very impresssive taste-wise.

I made a Peanut Butter Mousse cake for a party once and it was well liked. I haven't made it again because it was huge and more suitable for lots of people. I can't find the original recipe, but it was close to this recipe (scroll down a little) Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse CakeI comes out quite high and looks impressive when sliced with the different layers.

We posted almost the same time, very similar cakes! I'm definitely going to try the lemon rosemary one, that sounds delicious.

I made a from-scratch German chocolate cake for my husband's birthday earlier this month. A friend who was here for dinner that night hasn't stopped talking about it yet. I think sometimes old favorites done well are the best.

A Hummingbird Cake! (someone at work always requests this... and we really enjoy it)

A Hummingbird Cake! (someone at work always requests this... and we really enjoy it) I was going to suggest this one. It always gets rave reviews and many people don't know the cake. An Italian creme cake is another one that always gets rave reviews.

I make a thin layer cake - it is basically a yellow cake with chocolate icing but the one I make has 12-18 layers (it varies). I always get a lot of oohs and aahs when I make it. LINK

A close friend's mother made from-scratch Coconut layer cakes that I have never forgotten.
The cake I made that was my biggest hit was a pistachio marble cake from a golden cake mix, a box of pistachio pudding and Hershey's syrup.

Please tell me he offered to HIRE you to make the cake, and pay you in real money (not just for supplies)?
I think it's awesome you're a talented baker, but holy shit - I can't be the only one this strikes as incredibly sexist for a boss to email an employee's wife and request a cake? What an awkward situation to be put in if you didn't want to do it.
I'm sure your cake is going to be excellent, and it sounds like you don't mind, so yay. But that is pretty presumptive and rude of the boss, damn.

An Almond Joy cake is really rich and good, as long as no one has allergies.

There are so many people with allergies, it’s not something I would want to risk. (And personally I love coconut and peanut butter! Just not mixed, LOL.)

But that is pretty presumptive and rude of the boss, damn. Not at all. First off his boss is a woman not a guy. Second, when dh got this job at the beginning of last year he found out that birthdays are celebrated with a splash and everyone brings in something to share. I LOVED this as it gave me a chance to show off what I could do and people were impressed. So far I have made that one and cake and a few trays of cookies. I met his colleagues all at an out of town conference after the first cake I sent in and people could not stop complimenting me - that was really nice as my family takes my baking pretty much for granted. I did not take this the wrong way at all and I am super excited to do it again.

So dh picked and he picked the smitten kitchen peanut butter cake after confirming there are no nut allergies.
I've bookmarked all the others and can't wait to try those all too.

I get lots of requests for a chocolate cake I make from an Ina Garten recipe. Beatty's Chocolate Cake. I usually make a chocolate cream cheese buttercream frosting for it. I'll link when I'm on my desktop instead of my phone.
