"Viral images of raw, unwrapped pork being delivered to a San Jose grocery store in shopping carts have sparked an investigation by the Santa Clara County Department of Environmental Health. Posted to Facebook by San Jose resident Loretta Seto, the images show men dressed in yellow slickers delivering the meat to the 99 Ranch Market at Hostetter Road and Lundy Avenue on Jan. 14." www.mercurynews.com/2018/01/26/investigation-underway-after-raw-pork-is-delivered-to-san-jose-market-in-shopping-carts/The two employees delivering were fired. But were they at fault? Or does the store request this type of "delivery" to save money? Did they return those carts to Costco after the raw meat delivery?

“This isn’t anything we typically do. When we send our products out, they are always in a combo bin and wrapped. That’s how it left our facility.” Yeah, right. I believe Jim's Meat Co is partly responsible here, too. Because I just don't believe the employees unwrapped all the meat before delivery. That would be so much work and completely uneccesay.

That is beyond disgusting. So I’m going to assume they were planning to sanitize the carts before returning them to Costco as well? Yeah right. I wish they also had a photo of the vehicle they were removed from. Gross gross gross.

This is why the only thing I buy at 99 Ranch are prepackaged products. I've never trusted their meat department and now my issues have been confirmed.

No words. Stuff like that is why I won't shop at those low-cost markets. I don't care how cheap the produce is. It's cheap for a reason. I'll stick to the grocery stores in my area.

I'm sure it breaks all sorts of rules, but I confess that it doesn't really bother me. Having read Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, I am sure that what you don't see at meat packing plants is 100x worse. This is why you have to cook your food to certain temperatures.
Don't get me started on meat glue and such.

Who wants to put their child and shopping into that trolley afterwards?? I'm also quite surprised to see the delivery going through the main door.

Well you don’t see that every day. I never heard of that happening when I lived in the Bay Area.

Ok yes - but inside a meat packing plant is "inside" an inspected facility (however good or bad that may be) - and this very well may be how they move large batches of meat around their plant. But putting bare, raw meat in a shopping cart that has been who knows where, out in the open air with whatever may be flying around? Totally different!

I've seen it sit in the sun all days with flies on it, loaded in the bed of a pickup truck, and left on the concrete floor of a concession office all night -- and then a sea of women and children there the next morning to get their share.

If they had gone in a back door, like any other meat delivery it would have been a non-issue. LOL I can see being skeeved out that they used a grocery cart. That thing had to have been filthy to start with .. kids drool on them, peoples dirty hands on the handles... ick. Grocery carts give me the heebie-geebies without having a side of pork thown in. I am more horrified at what your toddler left behind, than I am with the side of pork, though! How do you think meat is brought in to a store? Like a side of beef, if they get it that way? Usually it is on a big hook - but it isn't always wrapped up. It can be -but not always. It might be boxed - as a lot of grocery store meat is "boxed". Most boxed is cuts like loin, etc. then vac packed. If we sell our beef to Europe, it gets vac packed as a large piece - a side, then they cut by the muscle cuts they want over there, which are a bit different than the muscle cuts we have here. It gets shipped in a refrigerated container, but never froze.

Unless they split up the combo bin to deliver to more than one store- then they'd need to unwrap it some. Regardless, I can't believe they took it through the front door where everyone could see!

More importantly did they return the carts to the corral?

I love how everyone's biggest concern is if the shopping cart was cleaned again or not. lol

I love how everyone's biggest concern is if the shopping cart was cleaned again or not. lol at least it was in cart (as if that's any better). when we were in Asia last time, we were walking through an open air market and sellers were just walking through to their stalls with 1/2 side of pork on their backs, resting on their dirty shirts and hitting whoever was next to them in the crowded aisles. i know because my niece got grazed by one.
