Great thread. I like all the ideas here and the list of places to donate. I have extras I can donate.
I belong to a garden club with 100 members, many elderly, and have been “the sunshine person” for about five years. I send cards to members who are ill or lose loved ones, including their pets. I also send special recognition/congratulations cards for special achievements or service to the club. Mostly it’s illness and loss cards though. I actually get thank you notes from people from our group for thinking of them with a card. That’s how important these cards can be. If you belong to an organization that doesn’t have a correspondence person you could be that person. It’s more fun to be that person than to have some drudgey thankless job like parliamentarian.
