We all see the national and world news but I find local topics to be so interesting and varied. What's going on in your part of the world that the rest of us may not ever hear about?
Big news where I live:
1. The local SD is thinking of outsourcing the custodians and cafeteria workers to save money. BIG controversy here. 2. So much rain that we are having flash floods and road closings. 3. Everyone is waiting with bated breath to see which entry won first place in the Outhouse Race! (Some think it was fixed but I think they are full of crap.)
So whats new where you live?

Right now, one of the biggest local stories is regarding a teacher who went missing in late May. It's now being investigated as a homicide, and her boyfriend was just arrested in the past few days outside of Chicago.

From our area, a small plane flying banners had engine failure and landed on the highway, hitting a truck.
Turns out the pilot is my ex-FIL (he and my MIL are divorced). I keep hearing people talk about it and bite my tongue.

Doesn't seem to be much happening here. CBC for Calgary says that a bear was spotted in Cochrane, and that the near airport runway is open.
Super exciting stuff.

Sadly the headline in todays Atlanta Journal Constitution was regarding the man who left his 22month old in his car all day New information appears to be coming to light that is not looking good for the Dad and maybe even the Mom.

A man either jumped or fell from an overpass and was hit by a truck and died.
Two shootings which now may be related.
Still waiting for a new police chief.
Yeah, I hate this town.

An "arrogant, majestic cougar" is making a suburb nervous Day care operators smoke medical marijuana in the house while the children in their care are present There are so many cats at the local animal shelter that they can be adopted for the price of a license ($12.00)

Police are hunting for a homeless man suspected of murdering a woman early Saturday morning on her way to work
A family duped of $100,000 by a hacker is fighting his bank to refund the money
A football star has been sacked after a social media photo scandal. He had his $3 million contract torn up after posting a photo of himself "bubbling" or "doing a bubbler" after his team lost the game. "bubbling" is urinating in your own mouth which according to our paper has become a craze amongst youngsters. Seriously, who knew this was a thing now? Silly, silly boy. He had 2 previous warnings after misdemeanors involving alcohol.

In the past week: a 14 yo boy died in an ATV crash, a young man active in local community died in a fall from a bridge, several major car accidents, and there has been mass protest due to the contract of a long standing pediatrician not being renewed with the local hospital.

It's mostly schools & teachers on ours these days.
Which schools fell short of No Child Left behind, which schools exceeded state averages, which teachers may strike, which budgets have been agreed on, who is working without a contract and for how long, etc.

1) Our county is trying to get a license to have a marijuana dispensary since we voted in medical marijuana last year. 2) A man facing heroin charges tried to commit suicide by strangling himself in the back of the cruiser 3) Lots of talk about a pipeline coming through, which would cut through nine cities in the area--most people are really unhappy about the prospect
Those were the three headline stories today.

A young father to be from our area was robbed and killed in Detroit. He was a truck driver and was making a delivery. It's so very sad.
There was a double murder in the next county and there was a 3 day manhunt for the murderers. The last one was caught earlier today.
I live in a small town and stories like these are very rare. We are all pretty shocked.

Definitely not flooding. We're in a water crises/drought. Just got word that we have to reduce water usage by 10%. First offense is 100% increase in our bill, 2nd is 200%, and then 300%.

The main headline was about how shoplifting is on the rise in our community. The rate of shoplifting is up while other types of property crime are down. The other main headline was about the upcoming primary elections for local offices. All the other articles were about local festivals and events.
Our local newspaper is not a heavyweight news source.

It's Fiesta Time in Gloucester (MA), so the Greasy Pole and Seine Boat races are pretty big news in this area.
OH, and Aaron Hernandez (former NE Patriot) and all his murder indictments.

Ours are all Hoopfest related or Ironman related.
Both took place this weekend. Hoopfest in Spokane and Ironman in Couer D'alene, so tons of people and tons of revenue.

I live just outside of Atlanta. There are always shooting and such but the big news is the toddler left in the car to die by dad may have been premeditated. Very sad.

The feds are planning on bringing a bunch of the children from Mexico who have been confined in Arizona to the Dallas area and hope or plan to have families host them. I'm thinking about seriously talking to hubby about hosting a kid or two. Political POV aside, the kids need a place to go and people to love, encourage and help them.
