How is everyone celebrating!

I have no one to celebrate with We don't have any Black (with a capital B) neighbours or friends. There are not a lot of people with African heritage where I live unfortunately. I will wish my Eritrean friend in Seattle a happy Black History Month and she will tell me WTF most likely. How can we celebrate?

I'm still recovering from that Quincy Jones interview! Hehe But seriously I'm going to read a Frederick Douglass book I have then donate it to my neighborhood little library. That's a good list of movies. The Nina Simone one looks good as well as the Oscar Micheaux film. Never heard of him before. Recently I watched Mahogany with Diana Ross and Billy Dee Williams. I can't believe I never saw that! What a funky 70's flashback! Waiting for Black Panther to come out too. Would like to get aquatinted with some more African American artists (painters) to add to my Pinterest art boards. Can't name any off hand. I'm familiar with the art in my head but I never remember the artists names.

I’m currently reading, The House That Race Built, essays by prominent African Americans. I just finished Sing, Unburied, Sing and last week watched Mudbound on Netflix.

If any one enjoys biographies, Walking With The Wind by US Representative John Lewis is really good. He's my hero in Washington.

I'm not "celebrating". Just like I don't "celebrate" President's Day (formerly known as Washington's birthday and Lincoln's birthday), MLK Day, or any days celebrating a white person.
I celebrate holidays that honor our troops and our country (and I don't care what color their skin is); Veteran's Day, Memorial Day and July 4.

Same thing I'm gonna do for:
National Women’s/Irish-American Heritage Month Asian Pacific American Heritage, Older Americans Month and Jewish American Heritage Month Gay Lesbian Pride Month National Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month National Disability Employment Awareness/National Italian American Heritage Month National American Indian Heritage
...get up, go to work, support my family, probably BBQ and maybe have a beer or too. That is to say, nothing unusual or out of the ordinary that I don't already do almost every weekend of the year.

Hi Delta Dawn here is great article I found about ways you can celebrate Black History Month if you aren't sure how. "We’ve come a long way from Negro History Week to Black History Month and yet too often the celebrations that are planned in predominantly white spaces are nothing short of lackluster, rarely bringing a modern-day context to the celebration or acknowledgement that Black history is a continually evolving living history in which we all play a role. Part of the problem is that for non-Black people, too often there is a sense of being a passive celebrator. Yet, in this current climate there is immense opportunity. We can make real racial change by moving from passive observation to active engagement if we move past our own internal roadblocks and fears of messing up." 6 Tips For White People Who Want to Celebrate Black History Month

I've bedazzled a medical apparatus (I joke I was fighting racial injustice but really it was just a gym accident) and will be going on Thursday with a bunch of friends.

I've passed by this thread a few times because I am not doing anything to celebrate per say, similar to a lot of other holidays, and didn't feel I'd have anything to add to the discussion. I finally decided to open it to read about typical celebrations because I'm unfamiliar with them and wanted to expand my horizons. And I'm glad I did. Because it reminded me that this is an opportunity to try and learn about more than the celebration, but about the history and culture. Thanks for the book and movie recommendations!

To be honest, I’ve never viewed as a month of celebration but rather a month of education for all Americans.

I'm thoroughly enjoying my cousin's facebook posts on the history and contributions of African American dancers. Today she had Frankie Manning and Norma Miller swing dancing, Talley Beatty, and Pearl Primus. I adore watching dance.

To be honest, I’ve never viewed as a month of celebration but rather a month of education for all Americans. Well I hope in the process of educating yourself about the contributions and history of African Americans in this country you'll find reason to celebrate. This year I'm going to be more intentional about honoring elders who are still with us. I've posted about Betty Soskin before, well I've got some insider information that she will be visiting my area in April. My plan is to reach out and host her for the day . I'm hoping since I live in a home on a historic registry and within yelling distance to a National Historic site someone on her team might consider it. Here is Betty Soskin speaking about the rage she thought had left her in this really informative article: "She collects herself and continues. “I once experienced the Constitution and the Bill of Rights as birthrights, as a given. Then I went through periods of seeing them as largely symbolic, as ideals that a bunch of old white men dreamed up.” A small smile crosses her face. “I’m getting even now,” she added. “I get to sit on that stool in the little theater in the museum, in the uniform of a federal agency, and I tell the truth to all those people. And they come, and they get it.”"

Aww, dear, what's the matter, no one at home to be a bitch to today? That is correct!! And you make yourself such an easy target. Please continue to keep us entertained with your racism and bigotry.

My pleasure. Anything to help you keep your bitch on. You see, I can only laugh when people like you call me racist or sexist. The words no longer have the sting you intend them to. So, I'll see your bitch and raise you one.
Although it really doesn't say much for you that you look for targets.

Here is a list of suggested movies from Common Sense Media link I like the idea of watching some movies to open up a discussion with my kids.

I homeschool my son. We read Tears of a Tiger. I just finished on Wednesday. I thought the book was fairly well done. It touched on racism encountered at school, work, and the community. I thought it was sad the way that the dad in the story tried to assimilate instead of embracing his ethnicity. The son didn't understand why the dad did so and the dad said it was necessary to his success in the business world. I thought it was interesting because this book was written in 1994 and I don't know that we've come very far since then. My son was supposed to have finished the book by 5:00 today. I am curious to hear his opinion and have a discussion with him. The book also tackles the issues of drinking and driving, as well as suicide.

To be honest, I’ve never viewed as a month of celebration but rather a month of education for all Americans. This is how I view the month as well. I think we should acknowledge the accomplishments but also the hardships that have been overcome and that some still have to struggle with. I watched 42 yesterday not because of what month it was but because I had been meaning to watch for a while and boy it was hard to watch in some places. I just find it so hard to believe that someone could treat someone so cruelly just because of the color of their skin. Then to realize it wasn't that long ago (1947) just really made me sad. I am not ignorant to think that some people don't still think this way but it is hard to imagine. Its a great movie if you haven't seen it.

Betty Soskin dated Jackie Robinson. I love how instead of using it as a claim to fame, she instead used it to glorify his wife.
