Good morning, Peas! Are you ready for your weekly color challenge? Last we we worked with one color. Today, we are doubling it! Welcome to Complimentary Creativity! Your challenge this week is to create a layout using complimentary colors. Complimentary colors are opposites on the color wheel. I went to look for one and came up with this link instead. Color Wheel
I’ve been using this link all week! It lets you pick a color and then will allow you to see its compliment...or analogous...or triadic...or split complimentary...or tetradic colors. For this color obsessed girl, this site is so much fun! It let me explore more than the traditional red/green, blue/orange, and yellow/purple combinations. You can even create swatches with hex, RGB, and CMYK codes. The computer geek in me giggles at that. I remember finding hex codes for color way back when I was hard coding my first website in HTML over 20 years ago. (No idea why it’s so tiny. Click to enlarge.) Playing around, I found this peach and mint combo to be quite inspiring. I immediately thought of Basic Grey’s Hillside collection. Goodness how I wish I had more of that! (Again, click to enlarge.) For a challenge in a Facebook group I’m in, we had to use some mixed media techniques. I used water color pencils and gelatos to make my letters for the title combining pinks and oranges as well as greens and aquas to get the colors I wanted. I had enough paper left over to make some labels too. Like last week, adding neutrals or metallics is fine. Just keep the focus on the complimentary colors. I hope you find the above website as helpful (and fun!) as I did. Happy creating!

Interesting challenge, lilacgal! Love your page with its subtle contrasts and stacked inked layers. Not sure what I will do with this, but pulling out the gelatos sounds like fun!

This really sounds like fun! I have never been able to understand that color wheel but this seems to make some sense of it. My DGD is an artsy person and I shared it with her also.

Isn't it funny how things go. I picked navy blue and orange and navy blue is my least favourite colour so I thought I'd struggle (I nearly did cheat and use turquoise) but I kept looking through supplies and bashed this one out super quick! Weird. I think having the limited colour pallet makes it easier sometimes. Thanks for the challenge lilacgal

lilacgal I love the titles you are giving the color challenges - fun! Your layout is very pretty. I would not have paired those colors, but it totally works. kiwigirl The vibrant navy/orange combination works perfectly with your photo. I really enjoy your layout.

Gorgeous page, kiwigirl ! Good job sticking with the navy! It makes for a very dynamic LO. I use navy all the time, but would never have thought to pair it with orange. Oh and I love your layered tile.

lilacgal, I had fun playing with the colour calculator and have bookmarked it to use later. As I said before, I think it would be fun to use when playing with mixed media. But this morning, I got hung up on navy and orange after seeing your cool example and kiwigirl's dynamic page, and this photo was on the top of my photo pile, so I decided to add some peachy washi tape to the mix I had already sort of planned to use with it. The rest of the title will be on the second page (not constructed yet) of this dgs and his brother playing in the snow on their deck: Snow men 1 by Gramma Dee, on Flickr

kiwigirl - great layout! I really liked that you reached out of your comfort zone and used a color you don’t like. Your page looks awesome! I agree that limiting color choices can make the process much faster. msliz - I can’t wait to see what you’ve got planned. grammadee - I glad you like that web page. Your layout looks awesome as well. The orange adds a nice warm contrast to the snowy pictures.

After looking at my pages on line, I decided the cluster on the second one needed something, so added a heart behind it.

Funny you should post this challenge today! My ds and I were just talking about complimentary colors and the color wheel Friday. I was coloring to pass the time in chemo and trying to pick the best colors for a page and he pointed out the use of complimentary colors.
I am looking forward to playing around with that site!

Orange - bleck, ack - hate it. Put it with green?
It worked. I'll be using this color wheel over and over to push me out of my black, white, red layouts.

I admit that I did not put much effort into this at all. I picked some paper I liked and looked the blue up on the wheel and the paper makers had done all the work for me. The wheel said the 3 colors were split complimentary. This was fun...thanks for the web site.

I love this challenge. I have a color wheel sitting next to my computer and use it often. I like to pick a couple of colors from my photos and then add another color using the color wheel. I had an art teacher at college that taught us to use it all the time. Mine is a Christmas page using green and red in their brightest shades. Christmas Angels by Nylene Budge, on Flickr I often use orange and blue with my red headed grandchildren because their pretty hair really pops with a little orange.

Isn't it great when the manufacturers do all the work of colour matching, @elaynef. Maybe that is why I like plaid so much! Will leave love in the Gallery, nylene.

Here's mine, with red and green lilacgal , your letters look really cool, and the PPs that you chose work really well together. kiwigirl , it's a really bold layout but it doesn't overwhelm your photo at all. Nice balance there. grammadee , the FACE! That kid makes me smile! gramma , your journaling made me laugh. How many of us could write the same thing? Glad you did! jeremysgirl, looks like a really fun day. I love the stitching detail on the pages. @elaynef , I love how the cotton made your "white Christmas." And the plaid you chose works great. nylene and stinkerbelle , Christmas papers and cute kids - can't go wrong! Fun challenge - thanks lilacgal !
