It seems like every beach vacation place is so crowded. Don't want to go on a beach vacation with high rises, and houses right smack next too, and on top of each other. Still looking for anniversary ideas for dh and I in May. Relaxing, no bumper traffic, no crowds, good food!!

We're looking at a cruise for that very reason. DH wants to go sit on the beach, I want more to do than sit on the beach nor do I want to cook. I'm watching this thread with interest.

Absolutely! But don't tell everyone, okay? If they all knew how fabulous the area of Highway 30A along the Florida panhandle is, they would all go and then it would be crowded!! Seriously, this is one of my favorite spots in the world. No chain hotels, no fast food restaurants allowed. Amazing local restaurants and the best crab cakes that you will ever eat. There is a line of little beach towns that we love; Grayton Beach is our very favorite town to rent a home in via VRBO.

We stayed on the Florida panhandle last year. It was like having a tiny bit of paradise in our backyard. Look at the Seaside, Seagrove, Seacrest, Rosemary Beach areas.

With an important caveat...stay away from Seaside if you want to avoid the crowds, especially the spring break season. We like to go there to eat at the yummy food trucks, spend an afternoon in the amazing indy bookstore, and soak in the architecture of the town. It has an amazing history, if you are interested in architecture and city planning. But it is a mad house with the spring break crowd and lots and lots and lots of pretty, shiny, entitled college kids. Not so much like the crazy party scene of Panama Beach and Destin, but still overwhelming at times.

Kauai, especially around Princeville is slow paced, beautiful and not super crowded.

You didn't say where you wanted to go but Cape Hatteras in the Outer Banks meets your needs completely. One of our vacation favorite places because of all those reasons you mentioned.

I was also going to say the north shore of Kauai. (really the whole island, but especially the north)

I always think of the OBXs as being crowded? We would go in May/early June. I don't think there is spring break going on then.

I have no idea how it would be in May, but over Christmas we rented a beautiful VRBO right on the beach in Ormond Beach. It is north of Daytona and not part of the drive on beach. We found some lovely places to eat and had contemplated going north about an hour to explore St. Augustine. We enjoyed the beach and condo so much, we just stayed in the area instead. We actually stayed in their Sea Loft 703 unit, but both are lovely. You can see them on VRBO or the 905 one is here: www.facebook.com/Sea-Loft-905-1455397064679702/You would fly in to Orlando. I love to cruise, so that would pretty much always get my vote. A big part of the reason is for your thoughts. You can do as much or as little as you want and no cooking. If you need any cruise help, let me know.

I assuming by beach you are referring to the lay about on the sand in your swim suit beach. If other beaches are included, like the walk along the sand bundled up in your fleece and hat, watching the waves crash beach, I would be eyeballing northern CA coast or pretty much anywhere along the coast of OR or WA. All manner of crazy, beautiful beaches regardless of the weather.

I am not an expert, but I from my brief one day excursion on Rotan and from others I know who have spent a lot of time there, I think that might be the type of place you are looking for.
It is an island, so it is crowded in a cool way Coxen Hole area), but the beaches were not crowded when we were there, and they don't have high rises built up at all.
Of course, that isn't the US.
I haven't been to Kauai, but you really can't go wrong with Hawaii. Even in Maui, I didn't feel like it was that crowded on the beaches at all and there is so much to see and do there and explore---but you will see high rises though.

I've been a few times, in fact around May actually once and it wasn't crowed at all.. no kids really because school was still in around that time. Even if you go when school is out it's the type of beach area that's so spread out without crap on top of each other that I think you would still enjoy it.

That time of year is off-season for SW Florida, our season is the winter, opposite from what happens in the panhandle. Look at Sanibel Island - quiet, great beaches, lots of great restaurants, nothing over 4 stories high, no chain stores/restaurants (other than Dairy Queen who was grandfathered in), no neon signs, lots of bike paths.. my happy place. Before we moved to the area we would rent a condo at Sundial, right on the beach with restaurants, pools and beach rentals. Wonderful place.

We've stayed in three different areas in the OBX and found none of them to be crowded, especially when compared to beaches in New England and the Mid-Atlantic.

Isle of Palmes, SC. If just the 2 of you, you can go to Wild Dines and get a nice ocean front condo. If a family, you can rent a house. The weather in May is ideal, and it will not be crowded. Charleston is 20 minutes away with outstanding restaurants. However, Mt. Pleasant is even closer with good restaurants, and an outstanding wine store.

as an example, there is so much more to Oahu than just the very crowded, touristy stretch of Waikiki Beach. you can find stretches of peaceful, quiet beach all over the rest of the island where the water is bluer and the sand is much finer. DH found those beaches much more beautiful than the well known ones where most tourists hang out.

Is it warm enough to swim in the Atlantic in late May/early June in OBX or even Hilton Head? The NW Florida/Alabama Gulf coast is a bit chilly for me until mid to late June.

That was what I thought of, too. We have also spent time in Cocoa Beach, FL in the off season when my husband had to go to NASA for a class, and it was delightful. But you can find quieter spots in the Outer Banks even in summer.
