Do you have the herpes virus? I am sporting a big, honking, cold sore as a result of my recent battle with the flu. I am surprised by how many of my friends have never had one. ( and in case you are wondering, it is on my lip people… Get your mind out of the gutter… )

Yes, started getting them when I was in my teens. I've found that Lysine helps a LOT if you can catch it when you first feel that tingling feeling. It's just a mineral - you can buy it at anywhere they sell vitamins, etc.

Yes I’ve had them pretty much all my life. I don’t know about you but I find them to be extremely painful and they take a long time to heal. I usually get two or three at a time. Ugh. I finally got a prescription for Valtrex from my doctor. You have to take four huge pills as soon as you feel it coming on but it really helps. I also like to apply Polysporin (Neosporin) with lidocaine to help it heal.

Being on your lip doesn’t mean anything. Hmmmm, what could your lip have touched that had herpes?
A virus causes cold sores. The same one that causes chicken pox. I’ve had them since I was little. You need an anti-viral, can’t remember the bame, but I have a standing prescription. I take it on vacations as stress tends to cause them to erupt. I have been known to get stressed while getting ready to vacay.

I get them. Because I had an allergic reaction to Abreva, I just call my doctor when I first feel one coming on and he calls in a prescription for valtrex for me. The Abreva made my lip swell up so badly that I could see my own lip without moving my eyes down. Teaching was so much fun with that honking huge lip.

Yup! I have one that I am trying to nip in the bud right now. Oral herpes is usually Type 1 and genital is type 2. When I had my first really bad attack I was told by my doctor that something like 67% of people carry the virus. I get them when I am stressed or haven't gotten enough sleep. I got to the point after my first child that I take 1 Valtrex daily to prevent attacks, I still get them sometimes, but not as bad. When I do get them I take 2 pills twice a day for 2 days and that usually kills it pretty quick. At the moment I am 36 weeks pregnant with baby #4, we moved 2 months ago and I am still trying to get us unpacked, we are about to put our old house on the market, and dealing with gestational diabetes for the first time. So just a little stress!

That's one thing that I have never had in my 58 years. I did have Bell's palsy in my 30's- another form of the herpes virus. That was scary!

I’ve had them since I was probably 8. I now have a prescription that I take at the first signs. If I catch it right away it helps a lot.

I’m lucky that I rarely get them. My brother gets them when he gets sunburned or drinks too much or is just stressed. Mine almost exclusively happen after I’ve been really sick.
I thought about going out and getting Abreva, but honesty, I’m exhausted and don’t want to put on clothes, or spend the money (this flu has already cost me about $200). I got it yesterday and it’s alreay starting to crust over. I’ll survive. But this week sure has sucked.

Yes I get them quite often when I'm sick or stressed. No I do not have herpes type 1 or 2 (and yes I was tested for type 1 along with a bunch of other stuff by my RE once)

Yes, I will get them on occasion. Usually they are brought on by stress. I've gotten them since I was around 9 or 10 years old.

Mine were a wedding present from my DH. Nice. I read about taking Lysine, and I've been taking 1000mg most days for years now. I rarely get an attack now, except if I stop taking them for whatever reason. I hadn't had any for quite a while and had got lazy about taking them, then I had an attack a couple of weeks ago, for the first time in ages. I'm back on the Lysine again. Horrid things. I'm sorry katybee

Also make sure you’re getting enough folate and other b vitamins. Low levels increase your susceptibility.

I feel like explaining to strangers so they don’t think I do.

I (like most people, no matter what they claim) have the virus, but I'm not very prone to breakouts. I have only had two that I can recall, one was after I had some complications from a minor surgery and ended up having 3 surgeries in 5 days. I got a massive one on my upper lip a few days after that, clearly stress induced. There's only one other time I can recall I got one n the same spot several years later after I had a cold, but it was much smaller. That last one was probably 15 years ago now.

The bad one I had was definitely stress induced. I was teaching Chemistry, Physics and Anatomy that semester and having 3 preps of such different subjects really got to me. I was working non-stop and got very run down.

I'm fighting one now. I have a prescription for them. That is a wonderful thing. It helps a lot although like someone above said the pills are huge, however they work!

I also take Lysine every night (500mg) and it seems to help. Had a prescription for something you take 4 pills right away and 4 twelve hrs. later. Never really worked. I hadn't had one in a couple years, then got one the day before jury duty in Dec. I went to minute clinic and got a prescription for something else for next time (Take 5 times a day for 5 days). I also use Releev (recommended here). Nothing really seems to work for me once I get one (even though I start prescription medication right away).

I get them all the time, always inside my mouth. Usually when I am stressed, but I also tend to get them when I have a Lupus flare.

I have had several over the years and usually when I am feeling run down and stressed. An over the counter cream usually does the trick and that is all I have ever used.
Nasty things they can be.

I get sores I call them cold sores because what else am I going to call them. I was tested for HSV-1 and 2 (along with a bunch of other tests) by my doctor when going through a fertility work up. I do not have either meaning I tested NEGATIVE to the virus, please do not tell me what I do and do not have. I do believe I will trust my very expensive Reproductive endocrinologist over someone on the internet. My family has always been a bit weird medically so I've learned to just go with it. I've had chicken pox twice (was vaccinated as a child for it too) and I still do not test immune to it.

No. I had a massively swollen lip last year which my doctor said was a cold sore but it cleared up completely within a day so it can't have been.

Funny timing - we just had a discussion about this with friends on Friday night. Both the husband and wife get them regularly as do their two sons. I've never had one and none of my four boys have either. We got to wondering if there's any sort of genetic component to it. I forgot about that conversation until now. Maybe I need to do a little research to satisfy my curiosity. ----------------- Edited to add: Well, that didn't take long. "Scottish researchers analyzed blood samples from people affected by cold sores and found that they have a mutation in a gene called IL28b. This mutation means the body can't mount an adequate immune response to HSV-1." link
