I find this document to be utterly fascinating. I can read through it and be reminded of all sorts of events of the past year. And also with all my big cat's trip to the vet this year, I was curious about how much that added up to. Well wonder no more, it was over $5000. That's not including the several times my husband paid. I actually spent almost twice as much at the vet as I did on groceries. Although I do buy groceries frequently at Target, and pay with my Target card, so that wasn't included.
At this point, I would be happy to vote for any candidate that could make pet expenses tax deductible.

I don't get such a review but it would be interesting because I put EVERYTHING on my credit card so I can get the travel dollars. I even have my bills get automatically charged to it. It would give a good overall review of where my money goes.

I feel your pain on the vet bills, but they are so worth it!
My bank (USAA) allows you to easily categorize all of your purchases; by assigning categories like gas and food for well known businesses, set up your own rules to automatically categorize expenditures, and then run some great reports displaying the results in graph form. It was very eye opening. Fabulous feature!

Why do credit card companies send these? Why would they want us to see how much we spend, have regret, and quit spending?!?

I think they send these out for tax-related reasons. It’s convenient for me to see all my online donations listed in one place.

OMG, I throw mine away without looking at it. NO THANK YOU.
We actually track every purchase in You Need a Budget, so I can see broad category totals any time I want or even how much I've spent at a certain store over the last 5 years, but I only look maybe every few years.

It would give a good overall review of where my money goes. I didn't know I could pay bills with the credit card! I'll have to look into it. I've only recently started putting everything on the cc (I pay it off every week), but those reward points are adding up pretty quickly. We've also been saving a lot more in the last couple of years, thanks to Dave Ramsey's program, and we hit the magic number in our savings account that gets us double reward points as long as we keep that minimum in the savings account.

Queenofsloths, have you ever considered pet insurance? I know vet bills often can never be predicted especially huge ones. Just a thought and one I thought I'd mention to you. My parents own an enormous Bernese Mountain Dog. My father got it for his dog when he was a puppy. His dog is now 8 years old. Recently he got a torn tendon on one leg that required surgery. It was over $4,000 dollars. Last year he had the same thing happen to his other leg. I asked him when I was last visiting if he was happy he'd gotten the pet insurance on Max when he did. He said, "Oh yes! One of the best decisions I've ever made". Back on topic it must be really cool to be able to look at your year's expenses like this. Love your idea of making pet expenses tax deductible

DH was looking at one of these the other day and was like "automotive services? I don't remember making a bunch of major repairs this year! How is that one so high???" Um, if you recall, you charged the new (to us) actual CAR on that card when we bought it, dear. "Oh." LOL!

Love your idea of making pet expenses tax deductible I did look into pet insurance, but there were so many exclusions it didn't seem worth the premiums. Sadly, although I have 5 cats, almost all of the $5000 was spent on just one of them, and he now is classified as having a pre existing condition that makes him uninsurable. If I remember correctly, there were 33 separate charges at the vet last year, and only one of them wasn't for him.

Both about your problems with pet insurance and the health of your kitty. I love cats. Have you considered a raw food diet? My 15 year old Siamese came down with stage 3 kidney disease and I was able to reverse it with this diet http://www.felineinstincts.com I'm not sure what your sweet darling has but they have a lot of knowledge and can offer some help sometimes on that site. I wish you the best and healing prayers for your cat.

I hear you. Last year, my cat broke his leg and then my dog was hospitalized for pneumonia. I think I spent at least 8k for both. I keep saying that the first politician who pushes for animals as dependents on our taxes will get my vote!
