I found this recipe on pinterest a while back and it is a favorite in our home. I do reduce the sugar a little, but otherwise I follow the recipe as written. I usually add a side of steamed broccoli and carrots.
Korean Beef
1 pound lean ground beef 1/4 - 1/2 cup brown sugar (I like it sweet so I usually do closer to 1/2 cup) 1/4 cup soy sauce (I use low-sodium) 1 Tablespoon sesame oil 3 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced 1/2 - 1 teaspoon crushed red peppers (to desired spiciness) salt and pepper 1 bunch green onions, diced (don't skip this!)
Heat a large skillet over medium heat and brown hamburger with garlic in the sesame oil. Drain most of the fat and add brown sugar, soy sauce, ginger, salt and pepper and red peppers. Simmer for a few minutes to blend the flavors. Serve over steamed rice and top with green onions.

I made this from pinterest too. It's one of my "keepers" I like less sweet and more spicy. I think I'm going to make it this week!

I'm going to have to try this! It sounds like an interesting twist on sloppy joes.

Is the sesame oil that important?

Is the sesame oil that important? I have not tried it without the sesame oil, it does have a distinctive flavor. But I see now reason why you could not use olive oil, or something similar.

I've made this too...but used finely chopped steak instead (it was excellent). I do think the sesame oil is a necessary ingredient. I don't think olive oil would be a good substitution.

I found it on Pinterest too, and it became a favorite easy meal.
Personally, I think it is one of the most important ingredients. I would not make it without sesame oil.

I agree, you need the sesame oil. It has a distinct flavor. I have made this dish many times and it is a big hit here. I cut the sugar way back though. I think I use about a tablespoon of sugar.

This sounds good. We have been trying a lot of Asian-style recipes lately.

My family looooves this dish. I'm sure I got it from the peas originally.
I think the sesame oil is imperative and also fresh ginger, not powdered.
ETA serve with steamed broccoli on the side, too. They go together great.

I just wanted to add a thumbs up for this recipe -- read about it on the main board yesterday morning and made it last night for the first time. My whole family loved it!!! I will probably decrease the sugar next time, but otherwise, this is a keeper. I added sugar snap peas the last three minutes that it was cooking, and afterward, dear hubby asked me to add carrots next time, too. LOL! We do have a thing about vegetables!

I had this again this week, and cooked sliced carrots in orange juice with some fresh ginger, it went nicely with the beef!

My coworker was the one who shared this recipe with me. I agree the sesame oil is a key component, although my family says it makes the house stink (hahaha), they love this dish (and I have a house full of picky eaters). I like the recommendations for carrots and or broccoli on the side. I always serve this with rice, as well.
