I've been sick for 3 weeks and have had laryngitis for 2 1/2 weeks of that, and it really doesn't seem to be getting better. I can't use anti-inflammatories but I just came off of a significant prednisone/prednisolone treatment. I'm not running a humidifier, but we do live in a very damp place. I'm speaking as little as I can. I don't have reflux problems (I'm on 2 meds for this). I'm still coughing a fair bit, particularly at night. I treat it as much as I can, but nothing can stop the coughing completely. I suspect I'm going to end up needing to be checked by an ENT, but unless they find another cause for my laryngitis other than the respiratory virus I've had, it seems like treatment options are very few. Has anyone else dealt with this, and if so what ended up helping you get your voice back? I've never gone close to this long with a voice that is sometimes low and crackly, sometimes a squeak, sometimes a whisper (I never know what's going to come out when I start talking; hubby thinks it's hilarious!). I'm wondering if I need to do very strict voice rest. If so, how many days should I go for? Thanks for any insight.

I regularly lose my voice with a cold but never for more that 3 or 4 days. If it's been 2 1/2 weeks, I'd be wanting it checked out. I try not to talk at all for at least 24/48 hours and, if I'm at home, I get by with hand signals and writing things down. Hot fruit juice with honey helps me and I and steer clear of milky drinks or yogurts.
Hope you improve quickly!

My dh is prone to it and treats it just like gillyp. 2 1/2 weeks would have me a bit nervous about possible damaged cords. I would certainly try to rest it as much as possible. So sorry another thing has pig piled on you.

Allergies did it to me. I could not believe that's what it was, but I went to an allergist (referred there by my ENT who specializes in singers). She put me on Zyrtec every day, whether or not I "felt" like I had allergies. I didn't lose my voice again for about 5 years.
I now take daily Zyrtec only during the allergy "high seasons" of spring and fall.
Not saying allergies are your problem, but it's possible - even if you don't think so!

I have been there. It got so bad that my breathing was affected. It took a few months to figure it all out. Finally an ENT stuck a scope up my nose and down my throat and discovered reflux along with sinus drainage. You should go ahead and see an ENT. I never knew I had reflux though I knew about the sinus issues.

Then I went through some allergy testing and got shots for about 3 years. Now it only happens once in awhile.
