Right now I have a very large desk which had been in the center of the room. It's almost like a conference table, and I used it to homeschool my boys . One side I use for die-cutting and the other side was where my chair was. It was in the center of the room. do you think it's better to have one long desk along a wall? I am leaning towards getting rid of the very large table and moving my work space along a long wall. It sounds like a dumb question, but I just can't decide. I feel like the large desk is so big, that some of the space is actually unusable. And then of course it's it's right smack in the middle of the room, and it's not a very big room. I don't want to spend more money than I have to, which is why I've always used the desk we've always had. If you've tolerated this long silly post for this long, I'd love your opinion.

Can you post a photo?
What about having the short side of the desk against the wall and have it stick out into the room. This is how I have my office desk. My room is too narrow and full of furniture to have something in the middle, even though it is the largest bedroom in the house.

That's actually a great idea! I hadn't thought of that. It's really hard for me to take a photo right now because all my stuff is in the center of the room covered with a tarp while the handyman works on the walls, so it's kind of a mess. But I'm going to sketch out something and post it. It might help me to actually put it on paper. Thank you so much!

I have my scrapping table in the middle of my craft room. I have my shelving and scrapbook storage around the walls. I didn't have space enough along the wall for the table, too, without sacrificing scrapbook storage space.
Another issue to consider is lighting. Is the light going to be better against the wall or in the middle of the room?
Having tables in the middle of the room does make a room feel more cramped, but I have far better lighting by being in the middle of the room.
Between the storage for my stash and the lighting, I had to set up my room differently than I had originally planned, but it does work better for me.

I actually dream of having a room where I can set up a large table in the center of the room.
I keep shelves (I know, I've said this over and over and over) on my desks to optimize storage. Is there something like this you can add to the center in order to improve it's function and decrease wasted space?
Is the desk one piece or do you have 2 butted up together? If reaching the center is an issue due to the depth of 2 desks, can you cut down one or both a little bit so you can fully use the center for storage? If it's one, could you trim it down on one side and hide the cut line?
Even though I have a pegboard in my office and I truly enjoy looking at all of the pretty things on it, I hate that I'm facing a wall. I don't mind it for my computer, but for crafting, I'd like to be able to set up a TV to watch and being only a few feet from a wall makes that a nearly impossible task. I also feel like I'm not 'in the mix' of things but if I had a large desk in the center of the room, I'd be able to have people sit on the other side and interact with me (crafting, too or just chatting with me).
Can you compromise and push the desk against a wall on one side but have it function more like a peninsula? You can use the area against the wall for a lot of good storage for things you reach for often, but clear up some space to have a wider walking path on one side depending on what your room size is. You could probably cut it down and face the 'ugly' cut side towards the wall to hide it with little effort if the size is still an imposition.
Not sure if my ideas are making sense as I don't know what your space looks like, but I'd try and rearrange where the desk is located and/or modify the size of it a bit before giving up on it entirely. Then again, you might enjoy having a desk along a wall...everyone is different!

I don't do well with a table in the middle of the room because stuff invariably moves where I can't get it. I have my desk under a window and it is perfect...looking out it and being able to scrap simultaneously is awesome. I think it all depends on the layout of your room and where you were thinking about putting the table.

I think it's a personal preference, and you could try it out. But for ME, I've had the desk along the wall before, and I didn't like feeling like I was staring right AT the wall. (not to mention, my back was to the door, which I just don't like in general.)
In the last two houses we've lived in, I've had the desk 'facing into the room' which I like a lot better. The craft room I'm currently in is kind of square so I have the desk angled in the middle of the room with a small table backed up to it, so you can walk all the way around the work surfaces.
ETA: I found the credenza part of a computer desk at Goodwill for $10, and I now have that sitting at the 'front' edge of my desk, kind of in the middle of the work surface. This gives me vertical space for storage- I keep my ATG gun, most-often used tools, etc. on the shelves of that credenza so they're within reach.
ETA2: the window in my room is very low, and is in the middle of that wall, so there's no way I could put the desk up against that wall. The way I have my desk angled, the window is off my right side, so I can look out-- and the cats can hop up onto the windowsill without getting into my crafting space. (although they do that anyway, lol.)

I also like to be able to stand up and look at my layouts and I felt like I couldn't do that when the desk was up against the wall. (but that's because the whole wall above the desk space was my storage shelves...) I love the big work surface you have in your area, woodysbetty! (of course, I would have all that space covered with all manner of stuff, but still... I love seeing a big expansive work surface, lol.) --and totally off topic, but before now, I always read your name as "Woodsy Betty" lol.

It cracked me up that you read it as Woodsy Betty...I am originally from Brooklyn NY and so far from "woodsy " it is a riot. Woody is a nickname for my DH and my friends who don't cook call me Betty ( as in Crocker!!) because I'm the one who makes/brings the food!! My desk starts out that way...gets crazy while I'm working, but I have a crazy need to clean it up when I'm done... I have issues!! LOL!

WoodsyBetty, then I have to read it again to remind myself. Thanks for the story behind the name, it might help me remember the letters I love your scrap room. I'm an everything-around-the-wall person, but that's because it's easier with a wheelchair. It does get a bit boring though; I love little nooks and crannies, which are completely useless, and shelves - I'd love shelves! But I can't reach higher than bee's knee so there's little point

Thanks JaneB I love my space too...I have some mobility issues which is why my space is laid out this way. I have MS and wear a leg brace and can be a bit clumsy so I completely get not wanting nooks and crannies! I love them but they don't love me !! LOL!!

I have often looked at scraproom photos and envied the people who had room for the big island in the middle of the room. Mine is way too narrow for that. I would say keep the big desk in the middle of the room and keep the walls for storage or displays. If there is room to walk around your desk, that gives you more access to work space, whereas if it is against the wall you would need to reach across it.

I would LOVE to have a big table in the middle of the room but my room is far too narrow to accommodate that so I have all my tables against the wall. At one point I tried to have one jutting out but it was just too cramped and I ended up moving it back. I just redid my room and spent a lot of time moving my tables around the room to see what set up I liked the most. I thought I had it figured out but a week later I did even more shuffling. Now I have a set up that I’m happy with. Maybe you should try putting your tables against the wall for a week or so and see how you like it. I found I knew every time I walked in my room that something just didn’t feel right, so before I put anything else back in there, I had to get the tables right. You might find that you love them against the wall, but you also might realize that your setup works best the way you have it now. Might be a lot of work (believe me, I know) but at the end of the day, it’s likely worth the effort. Would love to see some photos when you’ve got it all done!

It really is personal preference, but I find I don't use my table when it is against a wall--it turns into more of a dumping ground or staging area for projects than a work space. In fact, this thread makes me thing I should do some rearranging! So I like the middle or the "pennisula" style much better.
Awesome space, WoodysBetty!!

I have a 4x5 window that my table is in front of. I love crafting in the 'outdoors', except when I start watching the birds (3 feeders) and other wildlife rather than craft. I dream of a room big enough for an island workspace, but I don't envision it happening.

I actually dream of having a room where I can set up a large table in the center of the room. Me too. My room is pretty small and there's no room for that. I have my desks running along one wall. It works pretty well for me but there isn't much extra room if, for example, someone comes to craft with me.

i have an L-shape setup and i'm having a hard time using my big table for scrapping, i tend to stick to my desk which houses my computer, i keep trying to venture over because there is double the space---good luck with your final setup

I like my desk in the middle. I don't care for staring at a wall. And, your questions are not silly! The Peas have great ideas. Same, I have two big tables butted together along the long sides in the middle of my room and I love having that huge work space. I actually have another 5’ table butted up across the short ends where I sometimes sit to work on stuff if I want to see the tv. The big table space is great for when I need to cut out larger sewing projects or work on organizing stuff. It’s also great when I have friends come over. I can have two people sit at each of the 8’ tables and one on the end, or one at each 8’ table and someone on the end depending on how much space people need. I don’t like facing the wall even if there’s a window.

I do, so I would not like facing the wall. If you don't watch TV, are you able to see out of the windows where you sit? That would work for me, if I didn't watch TV.

now i am wondering if i will dislike facing the wall....hmmmmmm. I know there have been a lot of votes for not facing a wall so I will just say I do face a wall and I'm quite ok with it. I have too much stuff in my room to have my desk face inwards and the window has the ducted heating vent under it and means I would have my back to the door (which is actually the bigger consideration for me) so the logical place for my desk was facing a wall. I keep a lot of my (limited) supplies on my desk and have some vintage sewing patterns on the wall which make me happy, and honestly, I couldn't imagine not having my desk against a wall.

I face a wall as well and as far as I’m concerned it works fine. My room is small and it’s really the only set up that works. I’m looking at my work surface anyway so don’t really notice it. There is a window just above eye level so I can look out if I want to.
