I loved the book as a kid and as a parent reading it to the next generation.
Had high hopes but it was flat. The setup up to the part through the Happy Medium were tedious. Too many good things left out. Too rushed at the end.
Watch the 2003 version w/Alfre Woodard - it's way better.

My daughter and I were really looking forward to this movie and we were underwhelmed. The movie seemed "choppy" to me. It is worth seeing, just not nearly as amazing as I envisioned. It had some really neat aspects, just not produced well. Oprah did not fit the part and her acting was not up to par. LOVED Reece and Mindy Kaling, they were the best part of the movie. That's disappointing to hear. The trailer looked so good, I was hoping the movie would be too.

I just found this meme today and was thinking of using it in a book display to encourage our students to READ the book first! I have an older cover and a new one and have already mentioned to a few students in my reading groups as a book to try. I loved the book as a child- re- read it a few weeks ago, still enjoyed it. I was hoping the movie would be good. ![:(](http://i58.tinypic.com/2i0dtux.jpg) Corinne That should be on the cover of every Harry Potter movie ever made.

I have heard SUCH bad things about this movie this weekend. So many people on FB saying they disliked it. Such a bummer...I LOVE the cast and the book is an all-time fave. Now Black Panther on the other hand...absolutely INCREDIBLE. I can't stop thinking about it.

I hated the book so much as a kid that I had to reread it as an adult just to be sure. I hated it just as much as an adult. I can't see spending money on seeing the movie.

This is so interesting to read. DS's 6th grade class just read the book and a mom set up a movie date for the entire class to go on the 18th. My son's class hasn't read the book but the school is doing a field trip for all classes to go see it on the 14th...

It was not good at all. The story was hard to follow and the acting, other than Resse was not done well. Thank goodness we have movie pass.

We ended up seeing it.
I didn't hate it.
We both enjoyed it. Other than the annoying family, sitting right behind us, who talked through the whole thing!
Hopefully we can see Black Panther over spring break

Bummer I was almost tempted to try and see this in the theater. I guess I will wait and borrow it from the library.

We saw it this afternoon, without knowing any of the reviews etc. I had read the book as a child, but forgotton most of it. DS (11) hasn't read.
DH fell asleep through several parts, DS was mildly entertained, but asked what time it was about 5 times (it's not an overly long movie). I just felt it was disjointed. Some of it was beautiful to look at, but I never felt connected to the movie. The little girl was very talented. I liked her! Oprah was overrated IMHO.

A few months ago I read the book with my little after school book club (5th graders). They loved it and we had some great discussions about the central themes in the book. They did really well finding that sweet balance of loving the story and enjoying the symbolism and deeper meanings. I'm going to leave my experience right there and not aggravaite myself by watching the movie.
