I finally got around to sketching out a floor plan--very rough--of my soon to be complete scrap room. The yellow is one option for my desk--i would get melamine tops and legs and just build something simple. Alternatively, i could "wrap" the table around (that's the green option) and shorten the right side of the yellow desk so the desk is almost like 3 sides of a square. I saw a table like this once and I thought "how nice!" I don't like getting up from my scrap table when I craft, so having three sides would be pretty neat--the green portioni could hold my die cutter machine so I could just turn around to cut something--lazy crafting at it's finest. THanks for any insights--i am also trying to figure out shelf placement too. Oh, and I could do something totally different too--I am open to suggestions so please let me know.

DH has that kind of setup in his office, and he loves it. I don't love it as a second person in his space when I need to work on a project with him, but that doesn't happen often enough to matter. I'm only mentioning it to suggest that if you craft with other people, it might not be an ideal setup, but if the room is just for you it'll be awesome.

If you prefer not to face a wall, consider these alternate room layouts:
1) On the left wall (with the door), place the Ikea Kallax bookcase between the two tall shelves. Move the desk chair into the upper right corner & one table at an angle (ie one corner near the windows & the other further down the right wall), so you can see anyone entering the door straight ahead & take advantage of the natural light from the windows on your right. Place the other (yellow) table in front of the curtain.
2) On the left wall (with the door), place the Ikea Kallax bookcase between the two tall shelves. Move the desk chair against the right wall & one table in front, so you are facing the above. The shorter (yellow) table is placed in front of the curtain & the tool (green) table is moved to the right of the windows.
3) Buy a larger Ikea Kallax to serve as a room divider in lieu of the curtain. Move a table along the left wall, flanked with two tall bookshelves; if you don't have the space, put one tall bookcase in each corner of the wall with windows. The desk chair is against the right wall with a table in front of it.
HTH & you find the room configuration that works well for you!

I like your 3-workspace configuration. Kind of like a command center!

I have a similar setup, except flipped. I don’t like my back to the door, so I sit in the middle of the configuration, with the window to my right and the door to my left. I can still see out the window and also see the door. You will also have longer wall space if you flipped the room layout. And I put all my shelving units on the wall behind my desk (opposite the door).

IMO U shaped work spaces are the best and ideal. I say go for it! For me I have realized that wide medium shallow drawers are the morst ideal so I would look into getting a few of those wide Alex drawers to go underneath. Then cubes or deep shelves for paper and kits unless you already have a space for them.

I looks like a good design. The only thing I'd do is ditch the tall shelf next to the curtain and get one of the large Kallax, maybe the 5x5 or 4x4 and use that for storage. The "curtain wall" just seems like wasted space to me.

If you like the layout, that is what matters. Work space preference, is in the eye of the beholder(whomever's using it).
Personally, I don't like to face the wall. I would do two of the same desk/tables(long, rectangle). One would be placed under the window(where your yellow box that has writing in it is), the other I would place same way behind me. Like "=". So you could face the window or spin around and face the curtain/laundry area. On the wall between them(where the blank yellow desk/spot is") I would lay a 1x4 or 2x4 cube unit(they are approx 59 inches wide) on it's side, so that would give me plenty of chair turn around/spin around space. So I'd have a sideways "U" shape. Then you would have three rectangle surface spaces, one with cube storage and two(desk/table) that you could put a rolling cart (or similar) underneath(if the length permits).
I moved recently, to an above the garage studio apt on my room-mates property(formally, I was inside the main house). I had a square 35x35 table, but it no longer works in my new space. I recently purchased a 15.5in x 48in console table for my scrapbook use. I also have a 1x4 cube unit(laid sideways), and a couple racks and rolling storage.

ScrapbookMyLife thank you! that's an idea i hadn't thought of and might just work. !! You're welcome. That's why it's always helpful, to ask for ideas. In case there's something you haven't thought of. That arrangement would also allow for an extra chair, in case anyone pops in to talk to you. Just keep the candy dish, far away from the extra chair though. Otherwise, you'll have visitors all the time. LOL!!
