Maybe you guys can help sort out my spinning brain! I really want to get some Copics, if I had the $$$ I would get the set of 72, set A, since it looks like that has the colors i would use the most. (I'm looking at Ciao because sketch is so much more pricey!) But if I'm being honest with myself and my wallet, I should probably just get the set of 32. But, do you think that set would have everything I need for the time being? Or would I be better off saving my pennies in order to be able to get the set of 72 so I don't shortchange myself? Also, best place for the best price? Does JoAnn's or Michaels or anyone with the 40 or 50% off coupon have these sets and would they let you use the coupon online? I don't want to buy the markers seperately because a lot of the colors I need are not available in the same place.
Thanks for any advice!

Disclaimer - I am fairly new to Copics, just since last fall. The main difference in Sketch and Ciao is the barrel shape and the Sketch holds more ink and you won't have to re-fill as often. So really don't think it matters in Sketch vs Ciao. I was looking at either style but for the cheapest price. I bought my Sketch Set A off of Ebay. I thought the listing was pricey for "moderately" used markers so I made a reasonable offer and the person excepted. I found that the set did not have all colors that I wanted so I ended up buying a few individual markers and now I'm getting ready to order a few more. (but I'm a collector). The Set A does have a good selection of earthtones, greys (5 warm and 5 cool) black and colorless blender. If you're in the lower 48 states ScrapbookPal.com has the blending three pen sets for $15.72 each (Amazon also has these sets). You could pick which colors family you want now and then add on from there. Also get a black, a colorless blender and a set of greys. Free shipping starts at $25. I don't know if Joann or Michael's accepts coupons for Copics. Maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in. Also I noticed that you've only recently started posting here. Welcome!

In addition to my post above, you could use the color numbers from the Sketch blending sets I linked but buy them in Ciao version individually for $3.89 each, Sketch are $5.24 each.

GiantsFan gives very good advice. I, too have just started with Copics in the past couple of months. I bought the sets of 3 blendable color families GiantsFan refers to and they are great when you are learning as you don't have to try to figure out what goes with what. Additionally, I bought a set of 6 markers that are sold as "skin tones". Dick Blick had a sale on the sets of 3 that matched Scrapbook Pal's prices, so I bought a number of the sets of 3 from them because my preferred vendor (Scrapbookpal) did not have all the color sets I wanted in stock. I also watched a number of videos and tutorials on beginning Copic coloring before placing my orders and followed their suggestions for putting together my basic set. I am now filling in gaps in my palette and continue to add a few markers from Scrapbook Pal every few weeks - they are the cheapest I have found and their service in impeccable. I found Sandy Allnock's videos very helpful and still refer back to them.
Copics are all about blending, so you need to have at least 2, but preferably 3 markers in the same blending hues for them to really do their magic, None of the pre-selected sets of 36 or 73 markers put out by Copic really have the coloring blending principles in mind. If you have a few extra bucks ($35), I am finding Sandy Allnock's on-line Copics class a wonderful experience. I viewed her "pre-class" which helped me in picking out my original batch of markers.

I wouldn’t recommend a big set, because I think you’d be better off getting what you need to blend if you buy them individually. There is lots of good advice above on resources for starter colors.
Blick has great everyday prices, and you can pick the colors individually. They have free shipping at a certain point, which isn’t hard to meet when buying Copics. Start off with maybe 5-6 sets of 3 color blends to get the hang of it, then add more once you’re hooked.
I’m out of town right now, but when I get back next week I can post a picture of my basic original colors to give you an idea of what I started with.

I am not a Copic expert but I've also heard that the big sets they sell aren't really great because you don't get the blending groups you need. The beauty of Copics is in the blending and if you don't have enough to blend a color, it won't make you happy. I would recommend buying smaller sets (like skin tones or groups of three, plus grays). I'm pretty sure Michael's lets you use coupons on individuals and sets in store (although I think the biggest sets they have are 6 or 8 markers) but I know JoAnn only sells Copics online and they're excluded from all coupons.

I also agree about not buying a big set but looking at lots of 3 markers that you can blend. I started with copics a few years ago and just bought gradually as I could afford them. I started with a couple of sets of reds/pinks and greens as I have a lot of flower stamps I wanted to colour and just built from there.

I have the all the Copic Ciaos. I bought 72 set A and B and 36 set E, which gives you all of them. There are 5 sets of 36 that also complete the collection, so if you don't want to get a 72 set right off, you could get the 36 set you think has most of the colors you want. The sets make the markers about 2.79 each. I found that I was really pretty happy with them, other than I'd want to fill in a couple of reds and blues. The sets are a bit heavy on super-light pastels, and there are about a dozen markers in the 180 set that are SO close to another color they are honestly pointless. I would still buy the sets the way I did if I were doing it over, though, because it was still cheaper overall and I'm one of those people that needs their set complete. (The regular Copics were not going to happen for me.) If you do start with only 1 set, keep in mind only one set has the blender, so chances are you'll need to buy one.
ETA: Oh, and the traditional blending groups are split between the different sets, so that's one place where the smaller 3/6/9 packs are very handy. I was having a hard time finding them when I was deciding what to buy, though.

Thanks for all the awesome suggestions! What I ultimately ended up doing was just getting the Ciao set A of 32 for now. I really wanted to get more but couldn't afford it and wanted something color with. I can tell you I really like the markers I got, I wasn't sure at first because I hadn't heard of some of the color combos before on the "lists" out there, but I do like them! When I can afford it I will add the set B. I love Copics!!!
