I walk 3 miles a day 1.5 miles at a time and do about 30 minutes of resistance training. That’s about an hour five days a week.

I don't go to the gym -- I'm a Pilates + walking girl. But my dh has been a devoted gym goer for years and looks it. He spends a half hour twice a day. One half hour to lift weights, one half hour for cardio. Sometimes he walks the dog instead of cardio and sometimes he goes to a spin class. He takes two rest days each for cardio and weights a week -- not always the same day.

Mondays I do 2 classes, a weight and high fitness for cardio. They are an hour each. Tuesday I do a circuit class. Its go at your own pace but push yourself. Its anywhere from 20min to 1 hour Wednesday I do a weight class for an hour Thursday I do 1 or 2 classes depending if I am off that day or not. A weight class in the morning if I'm off and high fitness for cardio in the evening. So 1 to 2 hours Saturdays I do 2 classes when I am off that day. A weight class for an hour and the circuit class aging.

I just started recently-last time was 10+ years ago. So the "trainer" recommended that I do treadmill, bike each time and then switch back and forth with upper/lower body- doing upper body one day and lower body the next time. Even without the bike I'm spending about 1.5 hours + each time. Do I hate it that much or is that the norm? I spend about a half hour on the treadmill. He has be on about seven machines each for upper and lower so it's about an hour on the machines. If I add in the bike, then I'm up to two hours. Is that about right? (Ugh) First of all, good for you!!! I've been working out since I was in high school (just with weights/resistance and then I'd run). I've stopped for many years and then took it up again, and, thank God that muscle has memory because I could usually get my muscletone back quickly. When I do work out, I first do stretching/resistance (think yoga + planks... with some weight work thrown in) for about 30 min, and then I hop on a treadmill or walk for 30 min. If I'm JUST beginning, then I start with 20 min, but work up to 30-45 min. I've broken up the cardio time into 2 sessions. Sometimes that made it a better workout for me. So, in total, it's about 60-95 min at most, and I usually do it 5 days/week. Just to add: That's why I LOVE doing a home workout. I could do my cardio separately and it doesn't have to be at the same time as the rest of my workout. I'd hate to have to be in a gym for 2 hours, plus travel-time, plus freshening up, etc........... It's so much easier to do at home!

Is that about right? (Ugh) I was thinking about this last night buddysmom. How many reps and how many sets are you doing on each machine? Consider less reps with higher weights for more results. The last rep of each set should be hard to do. For your final set do as many reps as you can - if you can do more than 10, bump the weight up next time. Don't be afraid to fail either - if you can only do 3 for your last set, repeat that weight next time. 30 minutes on treadmill? there are lots of ways to mix up that workout - intervals, hills, increasing the speed a bit every time a new song comes on.... do the same for the days you do the bike INSTEAD OF the treadmill (IMHO there is no need for you to do both on the same day unless you are training for a triathlon) Maximize your workout time so you feel like you accomplished something when you leave the gym instead of counting the minutes until you can leave. And if weights + cardio isn't doing it for you, try something new. A spin class, use the TRX equipment, download the Nike Training Club app for lots of great workouts that can be 15-45 minutes long.

3-4 times a week
30 treadmill 30 minutes on the weight machines, I go back and forth upper and lower body on different days. I do between 5 and 15 reps of 12 depending on the machine. 15 bike
So an hour and 25 minutes, including moving around time.

Thanks for all of the replies!
As I said, I'm just a beginner...
He said three sets, 12 reps each time.
So maybe I'll go down to two sets and increase the weights??
As for the treadmill, it's not really cardio (I wish!!)
I do the "random" setting and set the speed at 3.5. The incline goes up to about 6.5.
I like the feel of the incline; it feels like it's helping my glutes and butt!
I'm not overweight, just really out of shape.

He said three sets, 12 reps each time. So maybe I'll go down to two sets and increase the weights?? WTG! Getting started is the hardest part! The way we do weights in my group class is: 3 rounds of 4 exercises. First round, start at your lower end of weights, and do as many as you can in 1 min. go up for the next round, and do as many reps as you can in 45 sec. Third round, as heavy as you can go/per exercise, for 30 sec. I wouldn't decrease the number of sets. I gained over 7 lbs of muscle in 1 year doing it this way.

The best exercise is something you enjoy doing and fits comfortably in your schedule. For me, what your trainer suggested wouldn't work. I get bored on the treadmill, but can work really hard for an hour of zumba. And I hope this isn't too negative, but I would worry about getting injured if I went from no exercise to doing so much at one time.
Is there someone else at the gym who you could talk to about what your goals are and how much time you want to spend there?
I'm a believer in starting with shorter, easier workouts, figuring out what works the best for you, and adding more as you get more fit.
