Years ago I had the Making Memories desktop one, with the rotary self-sharpening blade. It started cutting crooked though, and never cut right again, even after getting a new arm from the company.
I used Cutterpede cutters for a little while but the blade, tracks, etc were expensive to keep replacing(I was on a really tight budget at the time). I have a Fiskars 12 Inch SureCut Deluxe that is portable, not that I need that really since I don't go to crops or anything.
Anyway... I am looking for something comparable to the old Making Memories trimmer. It was so nice and I never had to replace the blades or anything on it since it was self-sharpening.
What do the peas suggest??

I loved my MM trimmer.
I have the Fiskars Procision. It's big. But it has the self-sharpening blade. The trick to good cuts is if you are pulling the blade carrier toward you, then the edge of the paper needs to be on your side. If you are pushing the carrier away from you then the paper needs to be lined up on the opposite side. Does that make sense? Anyway, I use it for large paper and the TH Guillotine Trimmer for smaller cuts.

I have a cutterpillar. I don’t 100% love it, but I love it 96%. I won’t even try another trimmer that doesn’t have a light though, I am way to addicted to using that feature to give it up. It has a self sharpening blade. They have both an expandable one and a larger one, I have both, but only use the expanding one.

I bought mine with a coupon at Ms.

I am curious if anyone has a Carl trimmer and what your experience is?
I actually still have and use the MM trimmer. But I'm also getting to the point where I might need a new one soon.
I find only cutting in one direction helps keep the blade sharp. I did manage to take it apart, but have yet to try getting the blade sharpened.
My biggest issue with it, is I have to use the gridlines to get a straight cut, versus just butting the paper up against the ledge.

I have a friend that swears by the Tonic guilottine trimmer so I'm thinking maybe I'll get one of those? My oooold Fiskars is almost D-E-A-D but I've never used anything different so I'm not sure what to do...

I've had it over a decade and it's cut perfectly every single time. I just recently bought the smaller version by Tim Holtz and love it too. mel, besides the 2 Tonics, I also have a Cutterpillar crop. I agree with everything Skellington said. All of my trimmers are self sharpening and I will never go back to the days of replacing blades.

I'll be watching this thread as my CM small trimmer is starting to dull and I'll be needing a new one sooner rather than later.

I have the SU version from around 10 years ago, plus bought a back-up one that I haven't needed yet. I like that it has the 12" measuring arm but the platform isn't that wide. I hated my Fiskars and Cutterpillar mostly because of the space they took up.

I also swear by my Tonic trimmers. I have the large 12" and a smaller 8" that both cut straight as can be and have never dulled.

If you want a guillotine trimmer, Tim Holtz is the way to go!
I also have the Fiskars sliding one with the reinforced metal bar. It continues to cut straight. My ONLY qualm with it is that you have to remember that the cutting blade is about 1/16” to the left of that metal bar.

I recommend the Tonic Guillotines. I have 2 - the small base 12x12 which has just been re-released by Tim Holtz plus the small 6 inch guillotine which I use for cardmaking. I had various.rotary trimmers for years but these are much better.

I've thought about the guillotine from tonic, but I often cut a square out of the center of my 12x12 and I don't think I could do that w/a guillotine because it cuts from an edge in. So that's stopped me from getting one. Others w/this issue get around it somehow?

I just loved my MM trimmer, too. I had two, because I found a deal on a pink one. They finally wore out. I bought a Carl trimmer. It works great. The trick is to replace the little 1/2" x 12" mat under the blade cutting surface once you don't get a sharp cut. link

i loved my MM trimmer too, until i didn't.
i currently use both the cutterpillar crop and the fiskars one with the wire (can never remember the name).
i like the fiskars for trimming and matting photos, mostly because there are measurements on both sides of the cutting area. also for cutting things apart, such as cut-apart pages or elle's studio labels or whatever. i do better with the wire guide than the light on the cutterpillar. don't ask me why! and if i'm gutting my paper, the cutterpillar can't do it easily.
i generally use the cutterpillar to cut my papers and also to trim teensy amounts from edges if i botch it with the fiskars.

My oooold Fiskars is almost D-E-A-D but I've never used anything different so I'm not sure what to do... I have the 12x12 Tonic guillotine cutter, and I looooove it. It's big, yes, but I love the way it cuts. I actually really like that it's >12 inches wide, so the paper lays totally flat when I'm measuring and cutting. (the only other cutter I've ever had is my old purple Fiskars trimmer, and that always cut crooked right at the very end of the cut.) I also have the small Tonic guillotine cutter, that I use for trimming photos and smaller pieces. ETA: I don't ever cut the middle out of a piece of paper, so can't help you with that. I do still have my old-school Fiskars trimmer, so I'd probably use that (or another one like it) if I was going to trim the middle out. I've heard the Stampin Up! trimmer is really good.

My issue is space: I can't leave my trimmer out and would rarely have space to put a 12x12 footprint on my desk comfortably.
I had the MM trimmer for years which I appreciated because it folded! But it never was *quite* right and then it started cutting wonky.
I've gone back to the Fiskars blade one with the wire - it's gridlines aren't straight but I've learned to compensate. and I hate dull blades. But it's small and I'm used to it.
I considered the "cutterpillar crop" as a next step so if anyone wants to chime in about that one I'll be reading!

I have a Genesis one. Then I have about 8 mid-range Fiskars ones. My favourite Fiskars one got STOLEN by a man cub in the family. He borrowed it he said and I found it in his apartment in the another city. How did this get with your stuff??? I am sure there are scissors with the paper trimmer, too.

For the past few years I have been using a Stampin Up trimmer. I like it a lot but you have to order blades.
If it breaks I will go back to my Fiskars. I used to like the triple track best but I have a few with the wire.

I have a first gen Cutterpillar. There was a learning curve, and it isn't perfect, but I do like it. I also have a Stampin' Up! trimmer for gutting the middle of paper. I also take it to retreats, because the Cutterpillar is not super portable.

ETA: this is the older version on amazon for 42....but scrapbook.com has the grey newer version. Is the only diff that the grey one is 12.25 inches?

I love my Procision trimmer but it’s too big to drag to a crop. I ordered the T.H. Tonic trimmer from Amazon and cannot wait to get it.

I use a craft knife for cuts like this, I am mostly just cutting out the center for photo mats so accuracy isn't a problem...
