I can think of three different things right off the top of my head.
The first would be this weather forecast. It made a few of the late night talk shows. You can see a Youtube link. I was actually watching the news this night. I'll never forget it. Ever. We were floored! Look it up on Youtube and read the comments. Hysterical.
The second would be about how our mayor, and a fantastic one at that, was re-elected by a landslide. The night before he was to be sworn in, he fled the country and moved to Mexico with his partner who happened to be in the country illegally. It also made the national news. 'Tis a shame. He was a great guy. And a billion times better than the bozos who have since filled the office.
And finally, there's the infamous Warren Jeffs FLDS stuff. The raid on the YFZ compound. (I had friends in on that raid.) The trials for sexual assault and abuse. Those crazy pastel dresses and weird hair. The children made me so sad. It was absolutely heartbreaking.
That's my town. Tell me about scandals or stuff in your town.

Well, not my town but I live close to Toronto and Mayor Rob Ford has definitely made the headlines for awhile.
Niagara Falls made the headlines with the new company that replaced "The Maid of the Mist". Hornblower now makes these tours.

The most recent one was the cat that cornered their family and caused them to call 911.

Our town made national headlines several years ago when, after 60+ years the town politicians changed the name of our sports teams, even after the town voters voted to keep it. It's along the lines of what the Washington Redskins are going through now...we were the Redmen and are now the Redhawks.

The most recent one was the cat that cornered their family and caused them to call 911. This one cracks me up. Hearing that cat in the background. Good stuff. Not that the baby got scratched/attacked. But didn't the baby pull on the cat's tail one too many times or something like that?

The town I grew up in has a fiddle contest that's nationally famous. It's in June and it was always a great time to play the license plate game. We saw plates from every state in the nation over the years. People from the surrounding towns were always shocked at how big of a deal it could be. Their summer town festivals aren't famous after all.

Yep. They strike me as people who never should have had a pet in the first place. The cat, thankfully, has a new home. I hope he is doing better.
i had no idea the Maid of the Mist was gone, they seemed so iconic, I am glad I went last year!

Amanda lindhout a freelance journalist was kidnapped in Somali, the Canadian government really refused to do anything, so our city raised a huge amount for ransom. Or something like that. Really a small quiet city.

The Night Stalker, real Housewives of OC, the '84 Olympic bike race was 5 minutes from my house (walking!), my school district went on strike, wild fires... That's all I can think of right now.

4 months after we moved to Colorado (Highlands Ranch), Columbine happened. And I just realized when I looked up the date, 4 years and 4 days after we moved to Aurora...

The town I was raised in is know to be the most racist town. It's been on the world news and local news. It was nothing seeing the KKK walking around in their costumes when I was growing up. Or seeing crosses burned. One the the first black men that moved there back in the 90s was murdered there (I don't know if it was racially motivated though..I was just a kid and don't recall) CNN actually held a show there a few yrs ago to talk about race issues. I will say that it's not near as bad as it use to be there. However I don't think that place will improve 100% when it comes to race issues. I'm just happy I moved out of that place...but now I'm stuck in a place I hate even more LOL go figure!

Well, we unfortunately had a recent mass murder where a university student killed a number of other young people at a year end house party ... totally random as he was invited to the party and wasn't considered to be a threat ... very sad Leanne

The Murrah Building bombing, tornadoes in 1999 and 2013 (and maybe a couple others), and our NBA team making the finals against the Heat a few years ago.
ETA: Oh, and earthquakes that may or may not be caused by fracking.

Our town was in the spotlight when Scott Peterson murdered his wife, Lacy. Strangely, I ended up knowing 3 people with ties to the case.

I live in the town where the Brown's Chicken murders took place in the early 1990s. Anyone in the Chicago area will know about these killings. I live quite close to where the restaurant used to be (it has since been torn down).
Dh and I actually ate dinner at a Brown's in a nearby town the same night that all of those poor people were killed. I didn't find out about it until the next day, and I was totally shocked.

I live in Tucson. Land of perpetual national immigration controversy headlines. Usually from people who are arm chair quarterbacks who don't know what the hell they are talking about. It's awesome.
