What so special about this product? To me it seems to be an expensive piece of glass.

That's basically what it is. I have a glass mat that I put together for an art class in college 30 years ago that's a sandwich of glass and masonite, with a sheet of white paper between the layers. It's held together with layers of masking tape and it serves as a palette and a cutting board.
The TH mat is also piece of glass, but it sure looks a lot prettier than mine does.

I think it is the media mat, the grid lines and the work space on it, when the ruler comes out I think it is going to be awesome. I have one and I love it.

What so special about this product? To me it seems to be an expensive piece of glass. Have you watched any of the videos on its design and how it’s used for various media? That might explain some of the advantages over a piece of glass.

The grid lines are what sold me on it. I love that it's so easy to clean.
My self healing cutting mats always stained and glue and ink was hard to clean off. And after a while they get kind of weird, like a strange color and texture.

I have an older EKSuccess glass mat with grid lines and keep an inexpensive craft sheet under it. I didn't need to buy his "special" mat.

I have the We R Memory Keepers glass mat that I bought to use with my Fuse tool. I don't use it with the Fuse (cardstock works much better!), but I do use it for almost everything else. The WRMK glass mat works great, and I bought it with a coupon at one of the big box stores. To each his/her own. I'd rather spend my money on other things.

The TH glass mat only cost me 20.00, not that much more than any other glass board I would buy. And since it is so much longer I can use it as a work surface as I can fit 2 papers on it as I work on my scrapbook pages. I don’t have to pull it out or put it away, it just lives on my table.
Also, the media mat is different then the craft mat.

I saw a video about the ruler earlier this year, but I forget ... does the ruler work with the mat to somehow function as a T-square? Like, is ther a clamp or a guide or something? I could see that as an advantage for some over a plain glass mat.

I was thinking about adding a piece of glass to my desktop and then suddenly there was the glass media mat. I opted for it instead because it looks cool and I didn't already have anything like it. I'd love to tell you that I'm loving it, but sadly I am still waiting for it to arrive...

My whole desktop is glass. I’ve found that adhesive tape runners don’t come off as easily as my craft mat. It left a smudge.

My whole desktop is glass. I’ve found that adhesive tape runners don’t come off as easily as my craft mat. It left a smudge. To get adhesive off use a razor blade it won't hurt the glass. In the video that Tim posted he uses Purell-type hand sanitizer to clean. I've been doing this too and it works great. If you already have glass then I wouldn't bother buying the TH one. Still, you should watch the video for tips.

I have an older EKSuccess glass mat with grid lines and keep an inexpensive craft sheet under it. I didn't need to buy his "special" mat. I have the glass mat created for the Slice. I use it mostly for cutting. It has a grid design as well. The only difference I see with Tim's is his looks bigger: mine is just big enough for a 12x12 grid. Still using wax paper or plastic packing material or the occasional acetate transparency for mixing surfaces and I throw them away when they get dirty or lumpy. I have long since disposed of my "craft mat" b/c I kept slicing it with my craft knife: you might be able to iron out creases, but nothing much works for the cuts...

Actually using the media mat has helped open up my work area. I do tend to keep clutter off this surface. It’s a mental thing. I’ve never had a glass anything so this was new to me. I wouldn’t have bought it though if I had a glasstop desk or some other perfectly good surface. The grid and the large size plus the ruler that will be out soon we’re selling points also.

I like the mat, I just wish some more thought had gone into it. Rather than black it should be clear, then you could put your own color under it if needed or wanted. The grid should include angle markings, 60°, 45°, 30°, and 15°. The ruler (an armless t square) should have inch marks. Maybe next year we will have Version 2.

I have a different brand that is clear, and I like that I can put white paper underneath. The Tonic European version with centimeters is white, so it was disappointing to see the inches version come out in black. Tim Holtz and his love of all things dark, I suppose. I agree about the angle markings and inch marks on the ruler, too. Yes, maybe next time.

A 0-6-0 on one side and a 0-12 on the other, like the TH Ranger Ruler. I pre-ordered the tool set with my mat and still waiting for it (end of April, I think). If possible, I plan to adhere grid paper to it to add the markings.

I probably missed this being mentioned, but I seem to remember in the video that if you rub ink on the glass mat, it doesn't bead up as much as regular glass? So there must be something different about it. I'll look for the video.
eta: maybe it was the silicone mat vs a regular craft mat.

Okay since the question has been asked... is there a reason for a glass mat? I guess I always thought in my mind ya'll have to have a glass mat for a special reason, so you are just scrapbooking on a glass mat? I guess I am having problems thinking that way... lol..

I have an old glass mat I bought years ago. I only use it with my craft blade and it slides right across the surface and makes for smoother cuts. When I use a craft blade with a regular cutting mat I always get it stuck in the mat.

Regarding the Mixed Media mar: I’m one of those odd people who uses her right hand for some things and her left hand for, others. I’d have no,problem with the ruler since I use a knife with my right hand. I might have a problem with the craft mat part being on the right since I draw and paint with my left. I’m guessing it can be turned around but would all the measurement markings be upside down? I’ve actually gotten used to reading Some things that was by years of experience though.

The numbers would be upside down, but numbers are pretty easy to decipher upside down. I bought one for a lefty friend who does use it upside down and she says she loves it.

Consider the tape measure. Most use their left hand to hook the end on their work, draw the tape body to their left to expose the tape, and use a pencil in their right to mark the proper measurement. All the while looking at the numbers upside down. Tape measures are made for lefties.

I don't want the rulers so I do plan on getting the TH glass one. It's bigger as well and since my craft table is in my family room a black one would look better than my green WRMK.
